Usually, yes—but not always as personal affection. Space Marines are created and deployed to defend humanity, and Guardsmen are the ordinary human soldiers holding the Imperium’s worlds and battle lines. That shared purpose gives Astartes a reason to protect, support, and sometimes respect Guardsmen. It does not mean every Space Marine feels close to every individual mortal, or that every Chapter treats human troops with the same warmth.
The most accurate answer depends on what “care” means. Strategic protection and battlefield responsibility are strongly supported by official faction descriptions. Personal respect is also clearly possible, as the Wardens of Ultramar story about Gadriel demonstrates. Universal friendship, however, is not established by the setting’s broad descriptions and should not be assumed for every Marine, Chapter, or era.

What the relationship actually is
Space Marines and Guardsmen fight for the same Imperium, but they are not equivalent branches of one ordinary army. The Astra Militarum is a mass human force. Its soldiers—often called Guardsmen regardless of gender or regiment—garrison worlds, hold defensive lines, conduct sieges, and absorb the grinding work of wars spread across the galaxy. Space Marines are a tiny elite by comparison: gene-sculpted superhuman warriors used where a battle requires an exceptional, concentrated intervention.

Guardsmen cannot expect an Astartes squad to appear whenever a position is threatened, while Space Marines depend on human armies to fight the many conflicts that do not receive an elite deployment.

The setting therefore supports cooperation without promising intimacy. A Marine may regard a Guardsman as a fellow defender of humanity, a soldier under his protection, a useful ally, or an individual worthy of admiration. Another Marine may see the same person mainly as a fragile mortal whose survival is subordinate to the mission. Both attitudes can fit the broad differences in status, biology, training, and Chapter culture.
| Question | Space Marines | Astra Militarum |
|---|---|---|
| Strategic role | Selective elite intervention when a threat is severe or a precise strike is needed | Mass warfare, occupation, defense, logistics, and sustained campaigns across countless fronts |
| Individual capability | Gene-enhanced warriors with superior armor, weapons, endurance, and training | Ordinary humans relying on discipline, numbers, equipment, and combined arms |
| Availability | Rare compared with the Imperium’s total wars and populations | Numerous enough to form the Imperium’s regular military presence |
| What the official descriptions establish | They are defenders of humanity and cannot respond to every conflict | They hold the line and defend worlds where Marines cannot be present |
Four meanings of “care”
Arguments about this subject often go in circles because “care” can describe several different relationships. Separating them makes the lore easier to read.
1. Caring about humanity as a mission
At the broadest level, Space Marines are defenders of the human species. Games Workshop’s setting overview describes them as “the Space Marines – towering, gene-sculpted superhumans – humanity’s bastion against the darkness,” protecting the Imperium’s million worlds from threats within and without. This is an institutional and ideological purpose, not a claim that every Marine has the same emotional response to every civilian or soldier.

A Marine does not need to know a soldier’s name or feel sentimental attachment for the rescue to matter within his duty.
2. Caring through battlefield responsibility
Space Marines often operate alongside human forces because a decisive strike cannot hold an entire planet by itself. Astartes can break an enemy assault, destroy a command node, seize a fortress, or reinforce a failing section of the front. Guardsmen then occupy ground, secure supply routes, and keep the wider campaign functioning.

That division creates practical obligations. A Marine commander may assign a squad to cover a human retreat, clear a route so a regiment can advance, or stabilize a line long enough for reinforcements to arrive. The motive may be strategic rather than affectionate, but the result is still protection. Conversely, a Chapter may accept heavy Guardsman losses to achieve an objective that saves a world or prevents a larger defeat. “Care” in this context means taking human survival seriously within the mission, not promising that every life will outrank the operation.
3. Caring as respect for individual soldiers
Respect is more personal and less universal than duty, but it is entirely compatible with Space Marine characterization. Guardsmen endure fear, exhaustion, inadequate equipment, and casualties while facing enemies that can be physically superior even to ordinary Astartes. A Marine who recognizes that courage may treat a regiment as more than expendable manpower.
Such respect does not erase the power gap. An Astartes remains vastly stronger, better armored, and culturally elevated. A respectful Marine may still issue blunt orders, refuse an impossible request, or prioritize a strategic target over a squad’s survival. Respect can mean acknowledging what human soldiers accomplish under conditions a post-human warrior does not share.
4. Personal affection or friendship
The evidence is weakest for a universal claim here. Some stories portray Marines forming bonds with mortal allies, remembering their names, mourning their deaths, or defending them against contempt. Other portrayals emphasize distance, ritual, superiority, or a willingness to sacrifice human units for the wider objective. Official faction summaries establish the shared defensive mission and unequal scale; they do not declare one emotional attitude common to every Chapter.
The clearest example: Gadriel and the Astra Militarum
The official Wardens of Ultramar article, “500 Worlds: Titus – Who are the Wardens of Ultramar?”, provides a concrete case rather than a general description. During a Tyranid attack, Gadriel rallies a battered Astra Militarum line and helps save a critical gate. The account presents the intervention as meaningful leadership: the human troops are not merely background scenery, and Gadriel’s actions directly affect their ability to hold the position.

The episode also shows recognition flowing in the other direction. After the previous Ancient was lost, Titus personally recommended Gadriel to carry the Second Company’s battle standard. That recommendation links battlefield conduct with trust and honor inside the Chapter. Gadriel’s support of the Guardsmen is therefore evidence that an Astartes can lead and protect mortal troops in a way that reflects more than detached tactical calculation.

It is important not to overextend the example. Gadriel’s conduct demonstrates what a Marine can do and how one named character can be regarded; it does not prove that every Chapter uses the same standards or that every Marine would risk himself for a human line. Its value is precisely that it gives the broad principle a specific narrative form.
Why Space Marines are not always there to protect Guardsmen
The Imperium’s wars are too numerous and geographically dispersed for elite intervention to cover every regiment. A Chapter may be engaged on another world, lack reliable information, be committed to a higher-priority target, or arrive after a defensive line has already collapsed. The Astra Militarum exists because the Imperium needs soldiers in places no Space Marine force can reach.
This limitation also explains why a Marine’s decision can look uncaring even when the overall mission is defensive. A squad might bypass a besieged trench to destroy the artillery battery killing thousands elsewhere. A commander might order a withdrawal that leaves a regiment behind because holding the position would doom an entire planetary defense. Those choices can be brutal without proving that the Marines regard human life as meaningless.
Scale matters as well. A Chapter’s losses are difficult to replace, but a regiment’s losses are often treated by Imperial institutions as an expected cost of war. That institutional disparity can produce contempt, indifference, or cold arithmetic in individual scenes. It can also produce protective leadership when a Marine refuses to let a human unit be sacrificed needlessly. The setting permits both because it combines a doctrine of defending humanity with a military culture built around catastrophic attrition.

Do Space Marines respect the Imperial Guard?
“Respect” is a better-supported middle position than either universal brotherhood or universal contempt. Guardsmen routinely perform tasks that Space Marines cannot perform at the same scale: garrisoning cities, guarding supply depots, screening advances, operating artillery, and remaining in a theater for months or years. An Astartes strike force may win the dramatic engagement, but human troops often secure the territory afterward.
A Marine can respect discipline, courage, tactical competence, or a regiment’s willingness to hold under impossible pressure. Respect may be directed at a commander, a particular squad, or an entire formation. It may also be expressed through practical behavior—sharing intelligence, coordinating an extraction, assigning Marines to protect a vulnerable flank—rather than through friendly conversation.
At the same time, the terms “Guard” and “Guardsman” cover enormous variation. A veteran regiment, a poorly trained conscript formation, a disciplined local defense force, and a specialist artillery unit will not present the same impression. Neither will a pragmatic Chapter, a rigidly ritualized Chapter, and a character shaped by unusual personal experiences. Broad claims about how “the Space Marines” feel flatten those differences.

Chapter doctrine and culture
Every Chapter inherits the wider Astartes mission, but Chapters interpret duty through their own traditions. Some place strong emphasis on guardianship, alliance, or the defense of Imperial populations. Others foreground honor, purity, vengeance, or the completion of a strategic objective. The same order to support a human regiment can therefore be framed as protection, honor-bound cooperation, or simple operational necessity.

A Marine defending a civilian evacuation may behave differently from one conducting a decapitation strike behind enemy lines. In a holding action, Guardsmen are comrades whose position must survive. In a timed assault, they may be instructed to maintain a diversion while the Astartes pursue the decisive target. The mission does not reveal a single permanent attitude; it changes what care looks like in that scene.

Individual history
Named characters bring their own memories, mentors, losses, and judgments. A Marine who once served alongside an exceptional human commander may be more receptive to Guardsmen than one raised to distrust all outsiders. A veteran who has watched a regiment save a world may show gratitude; another may have seen poor coordination cause needless casualties. Characterization should be read at that level rather than treated as a census of every Astartes.
Common mistakes when interpreting the relationship
“Space Marines are humanity’s defenders, so they love every human.”
The first half is a sound description of their role. The second turns a collective mission into a universal private emotion. Defense can be expressed through duty, doctrine, and strategic action without resembling ordinary affection.
“Guardsmen are ordinary humans, so Marines must consider them worthless.”
The power difference does not logically require contempt. The Gadriel account shows a Marine rallying a battered human line and earning recognition for it. Human weakness can coexist with courage, competence, and military value.

“One heroic rescue proves every Chapter behaves the same way.”
A specific story is evidence of possibility, not a statistical rule. Official material does not provide a percentage of Guardsmen saved by Space Marines or a measure of average Marine sympathy. No reliable number should be invented to settle the question.
How to read a scene involving Marines and Guardsmen
When a novel, campaign book, or game shows an Astartes interacting with human soldiers, ask four questions before labeling the behavior caring or uncaring:
- What is the immediate objective? Determine whether the Marine is defending a position, rescuing survivors, creating a diversion, or pursuing a target whose destruction could save more lives.
- What choice was available? A sacrifice made after every alternative failed says something different from a sacrifice chosen for convenience.
- Does the Marine recognize individual agency? Names, consultation, praise, mourning, and voluntary risk indicate personal regard more strongly than a generic order to advance.
- Is the scene representative or exceptional? A faction overview supports broad role claims; a single character episode supports a character claim. Do not treat either as proof of every Chapter’s behavior.
Using those questions keeps the interpretation tied to what the story actually shows. It also allows apparently contradictory portrayals to coexist: one Marine may protect a regiment with genuine respect while another treats a human formation as a disposable component of a larger plan.
So, do Space Marines care about Guardsmen?
They care in the strongest, most defensible sense that their purpose is to defend humanity, and Guardsmen are part of the humanity they defend. They can also protect human soldiers directly, lead them, respect their courage, and earn or give trust across the transhuman-human divide. Gadriel’s rallying of the Astra Militarum and Titus’ recommendation of him are an official example of that relationship.
What the setting does not support is a single emotional rule. Personal affection, empathy, and willingness to put one Guardsman above a strategic objective vary by Chapter, character, mission, and story. The best reading is therefore neither “all Marines love the Guard” nor “all Marines despise ordinary soldiers.” Space Marines and Guardsmen share a war and a cause, but they experience that war from radically different positions. Their relationship can be protective, respectful, distant, or brutally utilitarian—and the specific narrative must show which one applies.
