Stardew Valley lets you date and marry eligible villagers regardless of your character’s gender, including in same-gender relationships. That confirms the game supports queer romance; it does not, by itself, establish a fixed sexual-orientation label for every marriage candidate.
What the game confirms about romance
Creator Eric Barone stated in an official developer update: “Yes, same-sex marriage/relationships are allowed!” (Stardew Valley – Dev Update #14.) The game’s player rules likewise allow an eligible NPC to be married regardless of the player character’s gender, and same-gender spouses can adopt children (The Player).

On the current Marriage page, the eligible roster is divided into six bachelors—Alex, Elliott, Harvey, Sam, Sebastian, and Shane—and six bachelorettes—Abigail, Emily, Haley, Leah, Maru, and Penny (Marriage). Romance begins after reaching eight hearts with a candidate; giving them a bouquet starts dating. The wiki says bouquets can be given regardless of the player character’s gender.
Does every candidate have a canon sexuality?
The sources do not provide a complete, creator-issued list of fixed sexual-orientation labels for the marriage candidates. Being romanceable by a player character of different genders shows how the system works, but it is not enough to conclude that each character is canonically bisexual or pansexual.

Some players and critics use “playersexual” as shorthand for characters whose romance availability follows the player character’s gender choices. That is an interpretation of the design, not an official identity label used by the game. A 2024 academic analysis calls the romance system “bisexual idealism”; that phrase is the authors’ analytical term, not a declaration by Barone or a label assigned to each villager (Mackay and Roberts, “Peace in the Valley”).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What gender-dependent dialogue does—and does not—tell us
The academic analysis discusses details that can shift with the player character’s gender, including Leah’s ex being written to match that gender and dialogue for Elliott in a same-gender relationship. These examples show that some characterization responds to the player’s choices. They do not establish a universal orientation for the cast, so individual dialogue and backstory should be read as character-specific details rather than proof of one shared label.
