A Steam demo and the paid game are separate applications, so progress carries over only when the developer deliberately makes their save systems compatible. Steam Cloud can transport a save between them, but merely having Steam Cloud enabled does not guarantee that the full game will recognize the demo file.
The short answer: check the individual game
There is no Steam-wide rule that preserves every demo save after you purchase the full version. The deciding factor is the game’s implementation. Developers can arrange for the demo and full game to use compatible save files, shared local storage, shared Steam Cloud storage, or an explicit import process. They can also keep the versions separate or prohibit transfers entirely.

That means three outcomes are possible:
- Supported: the full game detects the demo save and lets you continue, sometimes automatically and sometimes through a prompt.
- Unsupported: the full game starts fresh because its save format or location is different.
- Explicitly blocked: the publisher tells players that demo data cannot be transferred.
Treat a silent store page as “unconfirmed,” not as a promise that your progress will be retained.

Steamworks documents demos as separate app IDs from their associated full games. In practical terms, Steam knows that you own and launch two related applications, but it does not automatically merge their save data. The developer has to make the applications read compatible files and, where appropriate, configure their cloud data to overlap.

Valve describes shared cloud storage as an implementation commonly used to share saved games between a demo and the full game. This is a developer choice, not a universal account-level feature. Steam Cloud can synchronize a file that the demo stores, yet the full game may ignore it if the file is in a different location, uses a different format, or has a different internal identifier.
Compatibility can also be selective. A developer might carry over a character, unlocks, or rewards while intentionally omitting story flags, temporary items, or challenge results. A “continue” feature therefore does not always mean that every byte of demo progress appears in the paid version.
How demo-to-full-game transfers are implemented
Shared Steam Cloud storage
In this design, both app IDs are configured to use compatible cloud files. You finish the demo, Steam synchronizes the save, and the full game reads that same data after installation. The process can appear seamless, but it works only if the developer configured both applications and the save format remains compatible.
Cloud synchronization is not a conversion service. Turning the Steam Cloud setting on cannot repair an incompatible save or create a shared path that the developer never defined. It is also possible for synchronization to be delayed or interrupted, so allow the demo to finish uploading before you remove or switch devices.
Shared local files
Some games place demo and full-game saves in a common local directory. The full version can then find the existing file on the same computer. This method may work even when cloud support is absent, but it is vulnerable to uninstallers, manual cleanup, operating-system changes, and moving between computers.

Manual import or a first-launch prompt
The full game may ask whether you want to import a demo save, scan for an existing file, or select a save slot. A transfer can be one-time: once the file is converted, later changes may be stored only in the full game’s format. Follow the prompt carefully and avoid deleting the demo until you have confirmed the result.
No transfer
Some publishers deliberately separate the two versions. An official demo manual states: “Save data cannot be transferred from the demo version to the full version.” When a game publishes wording like that, assume you must start over regardless of your Steam Cloud settings.
What official examples show
A supported case: Dinkum
Dinkum’s official FAQ gives an unambiguous positive instruction: “Yes! You can continue your progress by loading your demo save file in the full game. Just make sure to install the full game after purchase.” This describes the intended sequence: keep the demo save, install the paid game, and load that save from within the full version.
The same FAQ warns that a local-only save can be lost if Steam Cloud is disabled and you uninstall the demo. That warning is important even for a game that supports transfers: support for importing a file does not protect a copy that has already been deleted.
An unsupported case
Other games publish the opposite policy in their manuals. The statement that demo data cannot be transferred is stronger than an absent explanation; it tells you not to expect a supported migration. Do not rely on reports from a different title, an older build, or a different platform when the game’s own documentation says otherwise.

How to verify support before buying
Use the game’s own documentation and treat the wording as a compatibility policy. Check in this order:

Look for “carry over,” “transfer,” “continue your progress,” “import save,” or an explicit statement that transfer is impossible.
- Check the demo’s in-game menus. A notice at the end of the trial, a save/load screen, or a first-launch message may explain when importing occurs.
- Open the manual or publisher FAQ. Official documentation is more reliable than a general assumption about Steam Cloud. Look for instructions tied to the current demo and full game.
- Identify the scope. Confirm whether the policy covers all progress, only unlocks or rewards, or a single import. If the wording does not specify scope, record it as unknown.
- Check platform notes. Steam desktop, Steam Deck, and another device may use different local paths or synchronization behavior. A platform-specific support article can change the procedure.
- If documentation is silent, preserve the demo. Leave it installed, keep its save intact, and regard transfer as unconfirmed until the full game successfully detects it.
Do not infer support from the presence of a cloud icon, a shared publisher, or the fact that the demo and full game appear on the same store page. None of those facts establishes save compatibility.
Protect your progress before switching versions
Make a recovery copy before purchasing or uninstalling anything. The exact folders vary by game and operating system, so use the game’s support instructions rather than deleting files at random.
- Finish playing the demo and perform a normal save from its own menu.
- Wait for Steam to finish any visible cloud synchronization. If the game offers a cloud-status indicator, confirm that it is current.
- Keep Steam Cloud enabled unless the game’s instructions tell you to use a different procedure.
- Make a separate local backup of the demo’s save folder or file. Copy it to a location outside the game’s installation directory and give it a clear name that identifies the demo and date.
- Do not uninstall the demo until the full game has launched and you have verified the imported save.
A backup is especially important when the save exists only on the computer. Dinkum’s warning illustrates the risk: disabling Steam Cloud and then removing the demo can remove the only copy.
The safest purchase-and-launch sequence
- Close the demo normally after saving.
- Leave the demo installed and allow synchronization to complete.
- Buy and install the full game through the same Steam account.
- Launch the full game once without changing or deleting demo files.
- Look for a detected-save message, an import option, or a familiar save slot. If the game’s instructions specify a menu path, follow that path exactly.
- Load the result and check meaningful progress: your character, inventory, unlocked areas, or other elements the game says should transfer.
- Save from the full game, exit, and relaunch it to confirm that the converted save persists.
- Only after this check should you consider uninstalling the demo or cleaning up its backup.
If the full game asks whether to use local or cloud data, stop and compare timestamps before choosing. Selecting an empty or older file can overwrite the copy you intended to import.

When the full game does not find your demo save
Confirm that the demo really saved
Return to the demo, load the latest slot, and save again. A trial may store progress only at checkpoints, after a manual save, or when quitting through a particular menu.
Check synchronization status
Make sure the demo finished uploading before launching the full game. If Steam reports a conflict, do not choose randomly; compare which version has the newer timestamp and preserve a local copy first.
Look for an in-game import command
Some games do not scan automatically. Search the full game’s title screen, load menu, settings, or extras section for “Import,” “Continue demo,” or similar wording. A one-time prompt can be easy to dismiss, so restarting the game may be necessary if the documentation says it appears only on first launch.
Consider separate formats or locations
A demo save can exist while remaining unreadable to the full game. Different filenames, directories, encryption, version numbers, or internal identifiers can all prevent recognition. Do not rename or edit files unless the publisher explicitly instructs you to do so; an improvised change can corrupt the only copy.

Check the title’s policy
If the manual or FAQ says transfers are prohibited, the missing save is expected behavior rather than a Steam malfunction. Contact the game’s support team only after checking the current documentation and preserving your files.

Steam Deck and other devices
Moving from a desktop to Steam Deck, or between two computers, adds another synchronization layer. A save that works locally on one machine may not appear on another until Steam Cloud has uploaded it. Conversely, a game may support demo-to-full transfer on desktop while documenting a different handoff on Deck.
Square Enix documents a case in which transfer to Steam Deck occurs through Steam Cloud. That example does not establish a rule for every Square Enix title or every Steam game; it shows why you should read the platform-specific instructions for the exact game. Before changing devices, launch the demo on the original machine, save, wait for synchronization, and verify the cloud copy before opening the full game elsewhere.
A practical way to classify any game

Use this checklist before spending time completing a demo. If one cell is unknown, keep the original save and wait for evidence from the game’s official support material.

Bottom line
Steam demos keep your progress only when the developer has built a compatible bridge to the full game. Steam Cloud can carry the file, but it cannot invent compatibility. Verify the exact title’s policy, back up the demo save, install the full game before removing anything, and confirm the imported progress in-game. If the publisher says transfers are unavailable, expect to start over.
