No—not if “pro controller” means a conventional third-party gamepad. PlayStation’s current compatibility guidance says PS5 games use DualSense wireless controllers, while licensed third-party gamepads are intended for supported PS4 games running on a PS5. Officially licensed specialty devices such as racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks are a separate category and can work with PS5 games when the game supports them.
The deciding factors are the game’s version, the controller’s type, its exact model and licensing, and the game’s own peripheral support. A “pro” label or an official license is not a promise that one controller works in every title.

The rule in one sentence
For a standard third-party pro-style pad with two sticks, a D-pad and ordinary game buttons, assume it will not control the PS5 version of a game unless PlayStation and the manufacturer specifically say it is supported. PlayStation’s current wording is: “PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers.” That rule concerns standard gamepads; it does not mean every USB or Bluetooth device is unusable in every circumstance.
PlayStation also warns that not all officially licensed or third-party controllers may work on PS5. Compatibility is therefore a title-and-model question, not something a buyer can determine from the word “licensed” alone.

First identify which version of the game you are running
The same disc or download can present two different compatibility cases. A PS5 may run the native PS5 version of a game, or it may run the PS4 version through backward compatibility. The controller rules differ.
| Game running on the PS5 | Standard licensed third-party gamepad | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Native PS5 version | Generally not supported | Use a DualSense wireless controller unless the game and device maker document a specific exception. |
| PS4 version played on PS5 | Supported when the pad is an officially licensed PS4 gamepad and the title itself supports ordinary gamepads | The PS5 is using the PS4 software rules, so a compatible licensed PS4 controller can work. |
| Native PS5 version with a specialty peripheral | Possible for a racing wheel, arcade stick or flight stick | Support depends on the game, the peripheral type and the exact model. |
Do not treat “a PS4 game on a PS5” and “the PS5 version of that game” as interchangeable. Installing a PS5 upgrade can change which controller rule applies, even when the game’s name is unchanged.
How PlayStation classifies different controller types
Standard third-party pro gamepads
These are the familiar pro-style controllers designed to replace a normal console pad. They may add rear buttons, remapping, adjustable sticks, trigger stops, profiles or different grips, but they remain standard gamepads for compatibility purposes. PlayStation’s FAQ says licensed PS4 standard gamepads are for PS4 games played on PS5 and “are not supported for playing PS5 games.” Extra buttons do not create an exception.

Racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks are handled separately from standard gamepads. An officially licensed wheel, stick or flight controller can work with a PS5 game when that game supports the relevant peripheral. This exception cannot be generalized to a conventional pro pad: a wheel’s support does not imply that a third-party gamepad will work in the same title.

Controllers used for assistance
PS5’s second-controller-for-assistance feature lets two controllers operate as if they were one in supported accessibility setups. A supported third-party controller may be usable in that specific role. That does not establish that the same device can serve as the primary controller in every PS5 game. Check the device instructions and the console’s current accessibility documentation before relying on it.
First-party pro-style hardware
DualSense Edge is a first-party PlayStation controller designed for PS5. It offers remappable buttons, adjustable trigger and stick settings, changeable stick caps and saved profiles. Because it is part of the DualSense family, its PS5 compatibility is a different question from that of a third-party gamepad. It should not be described as a third-party controller.
Why an official license still does not mean universal support
Licensing indicates that a manufacturer has met a platform-holder’s requirements for a particular product or platform use. It does not promise that every game exposes the same input paths, accepts every feature, or supports every regional revision of a product.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The game may be a PS5 build. A licensed PS4 pad can still be excluded when the native PS5 executable is running.
- Support can be model-specific. Wireless and wired versions, revisions, firmware branches and regional variants may not share identical support.
- Games choose their peripheral support. A racing title may recognize certain wheels but not a standard pad with a racing-style layout; an arcade game may support sticks but not every controller branded for the platform.
- Advanced controls are separate from basic input. Remapping software, rear paddles, trigger stops and profile memory may work only through the controller’s own firmware or companion app, and a game need not recognize those controls individually.
For these reasons, PlayStation recommends checking the exact product with its manufacturer for the specific titles you intend to play.

How to check a controller before buying or installing it
- Record the exact game edition. On the PS5 home screen, highlight the game, press the Options button and inspect whether you are launching the PS5 or PS4 version. If both are installed, select the three-dot menu and choose the intended version.
- Write down the complete controller model. Include the product name, “Pro” or “Tournament” suffix, connection type and revision number. A family name is not precise enough.
- Read the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Look for an explicit PS5-game statement and the specific title, not merely “works on PS5” or “officially licensed.” Confirm whether the statement applies to wireless, wired and PC modes separately.
- Check the game developer’s peripheral notes. Racing, fighting and flight games often publish supported wheels or sticks. Absence from that list is a reason to ask the manufacturer before purchase.
- Verify firmware and mode switches. Some devices have PS4, PS5, PC or tournament modes. Use the mode and firmware named in the compatibility documentation, then restart the console and game after switching.
- Confirm the return policy. Compatibility claims can change with firmware and game updates. Buy from a seller that allows a return if the exact title does not recognize the device.
This process is more reliable than assuming that a product shown in an accessories category will function in every game. PlayStation’s accessories listing includes officially licensed models such as Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded Wireless, Razer Raiju and Nacon Revolution 5 Pro, but the listing itself does not settle compatibility for every game or regional model.
Can a PS4 pro controller play PS5 games?
Usually no, when it is a conventional licensed PS4 gamepad. It can be useful for PS4 software running on the PS5, but launching the native PS5 edition generally requires a DualSense wireless controller. If a title offers both editions, check which one is selected before concluding that the controller is defective.
A specialty PS4 peripheral follows a different path. For example, an officially licensed wheel or arcade stick may be supported by a native PS5 game if that game includes support for that class of device. The relevant question is not “Is it a PS4 accessory?” but “Does this exact model support this peripheral-aware PS5 title?”
Compatibility is separate from pro-controller features
Once a pad is confirmed to work, compare its features independently. A controller can have excellent customization and still be limited to PS4 games on PS5.

| Feature | What it changes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Remappable buttons | Lets you assign available inputs to different physical buttons. | That the PS5 version of a game accepts the controller. |
| Adjustable triggers | Changes trigger travel or resistance according to the controller’s hardware. | That a game will reproduce DualSense adaptive-trigger effects. |
| Adjustable sticks and caps | Changes height, shape or sensitivity options on the controller. | That the console recognizes it as a DualSense device. |
| Saved profiles | Stores different mappings or sensitivity settings for games. | That profile switching works inside every PS5 title. |
| Rear buttons or paddles | Adds alternate ways to trigger inputs supported by the controller. | That a game exposes extra commands beyond its normal input map. |
For a native PS5 game, controller compatibility comes first. Features matter only after the console and title accept the device.
When a specialty peripheral is the better choice
Specialty peripherals are the clearest third-party exception. If you are selecting a racing wheel, arcade stick or flight stick, start with the game’s supported-device list, then match the exact model and platform mode. Confirm whether the title supports force feedback, button mapping, clutch or flight controls as applicable; basic recognition and full feature support are not necessarily the same.
Do not buy a standard pro pad expecting it to inherit the compatibility of a wheel or arcade stick. PlayStation treats these categories separately because games communicate with them through different input support.

Using a third-party controller for PS5 assistance
If your goal is shared play or accessibility rather than replacing the main controller, investigate the second-controller-for-assistance feature. A supported third-party controller can participate in that setup, subject to the device’s instructions and PS5 support. This is a specific console function: it should not be used as evidence that the controller is a universal PS5 gamepad.

Set up the assistance pair in PS5 settings, test both devices in the intended game, and keep a DualSense available for menus or titles that do not accept the third-party device in the needed role.
DualSense Edge: the first-party route to pro controls
Readers who want remapping, trigger and stick adjustments, interchangeable stick caps and saved profiles specifically for PS5 games have a first-party option in DualSense Edge. PlayStation documents both the controller’s PS5 design and its pairing process. Its status matters: it is a customizable DualSense, not a licensed third-party PS4 gamepad being made to work around the PS5 rule.
That distinction also helps set expectations. Choosing a first-party pro-style controller addresses standard PS5-game compatibility, while choosing a third-party licensed pad may prioritize a particular shape, button layout or price but can limit you to PS4 software on the console.

The PS5 version will not accept input
Quit the game and verify that the PS4 version is not the one you intended to test—or vice versa. Recheck the manufacturer’s model-specific PS5 statement, update the controller firmware, select the documented console mode and reconnect it. If the game remains unresponsive, treat the device as unsupported for that PS5 version rather than assuming a setting is hidden.
The controller works in menus but not in the game
Menu recognition is not proof of in-game compatibility. A title can accept navigation input while rejecting a controller once gameplay starts. Check the game’s own peripheral documentation and test with a DualSense to isolate whether the issue is the title’s controller rule.
A wheel or arcade stick works in one game but not another
That is expected when support is title-specific. Confirm the supported peripheral list, required firmware and any in-game device selection. Do not infer that support in one PS5 game extends to the rest of the library.
Wireless pairing fails
Use the connection method specified by the manufacturer, remove the controller from another paired device, charge it, and retry after a PS5 restart. If the product is supported only in wired mode, wireless pairing will not make it a compatible PS5 gamepad.

A practical buying decision
- Need a standard pad for native PS5 games? Choose a DualSense-compatible first-party option, including DualSense Edge if you need pro controls.
- Mostly play PS4 games on PS5? A licensed PS4 pro gamepad can be suitable, provided the exact model and the games are supported.
- Play racing, fighting or flight titles? Consider a licensed wheel, arcade stick or flight stick only after checking each game’s supported-device list.
- Need two people to share one control scheme? Check whether the exact third-party controller is supported for PS5’s second-controller-for-assistance feature.
- Want one device for everything? No standard third-party pad is guaranteed to cover every PS5 game. Keep a DualSense available and verify each important title before committing.
