What does the 61% figure measure?
It measures gamers who play across multiple devices, according to CTA research as reported by GamesBeat. It does not mean that 61% of all Americans do so: GamesBeat’s account distinguishes gamers from the broader population, and the 61% figure is specifically about gamers.
“Playing across multiple devices” is also not the same as cross-play. Cross-play means people using different platforms can play together in the same game. The reported finding does not establish that respondents used cross-play, carried progress between devices, or played the same title on each device.

What the survey says about devices, accessories, and subscriptions
In its account of the 2024 survey, GamesBeat reported that 64% planned to purchase a new gaming device in the following year and 62% intended to purchase gaming peripheral technology over that same next-year horizon. Those were plans reported at the time, not current forecasts or evidence that the purchases happened.

On subscriptions, GamesBeat reported that 40% used or held a paid game-subscription membership; among that group, 49% had purchased one in the prior six months. It also reported that 29% were interested in paying for a subscription in the next year. These figures do not identify a provider or show that a subscription enables multi-device play.

CTA senior manager of market research Steven Hummel told GamesBeat, “This time we decided we’ll take a pause, and we’ll go deeper on the gaming population,” describing the report’s focus rather than explaining the 61% result. GamesBeat also quoted Hummel saying, “It wasn’t really a shocking find, but it was fascinating to know how many gamers, even the most hardcore gamers, are still playing established titles.”
