What the two features actually provide
Cross-play
Cross-play lets players on different supported platforms enter the same multiplayer session. It does not automatically make every version interchangeable: the game must support the specific platform pair, and the server or session must have cross-play enabled where that setting exists. Account requirements, matchmaking rules and update versions can still prevent a connection.
Dedicated servers
A dedicated server runs the game world separately from a player’s active game client. Once it is configured and left online, friends can return while the original owner is offline. A normal co-op host, by contrast, usually has to launch the game before others can enter. Dedicated hosting can be self-managed on a spare computer, placed on a cloud virtual machine or rented from a game-server provider. It also creates administration work: updates, backups, passwords, ports and moderation become the owner’s responsibility unless a managed host handles them.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore a bright Norse realm: discover dungeons, slay legendary beasts, and build anywhere as you explore formidable, procedurally-generated lands on your quest to take on Ragnarok.
- Face colossal game-changers: protect the speed of Yggdrasil from a nightly invasion of helthings, and work together with your tribe to withstand the ever-looming threat of the jotnar.
- Forge your Viking Legend: choose your class and take the battle into the wilds as you seek resources to craft epic armor and mighty weaponry. Then, unleash powerful abilities and prepare clever village defenses to give your enemies some nasty surprises.

Valheim: cross-play works, but Xbox is a client rather than a host
How cross-play works
Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ, dated February 7, 2025, describes a code-based process. The player starting the game or dedicated server enables cross-play, then copies the generated join code. Friends on another platform enter that code to add the server and connect. This is the relevant path for PC-to-Xbox play: an Xbox player can join a crossplay-enabled dedicated server even though the server itself is running elsewhere.
The setting matters. If cross-play is disabled, a server intended only for the platform ecosystem on which it is hosted will not provide the same cross-platform route. Everyone should also be on compatible game versions; a client that has not received the server’s update may be rejected before authentication.

No. The official FAQ states, “You can’t set up a dedicated server on an Xbox.” The console can participate as a client, but an always-on world requires a computer or another supported hosting environment. This distinction is easy to miss because Xbox can still join the resulting server and play normally.
How to run a persistent Valheim world
- Choose the host machine. Use a Windows or Linux computer that can remain powered on, or a compatible rented server. Iron Gate does not provide official servers.
- Install the Valheim Dedicated Server application. The official FAQ directs owners to download it through Steam rather than using the Xbox installation.
- Configure the world and access controls. Set the world name, password and administrative permissions in the server’s startup configuration. Keep the password private and give admin rights only to trusted players.
- Enable cross-play. Turn on the cross-play option in the dedicated-server configuration so Xbox and other supported platforms can use the code-based connection.
- Make it reachable. A self-hosted installation may require firewall rules and port forwarding on the router. A managed host generally exposes the required ports through its control panel.
- Share the join code. Start the server, copy its code and have each friend add that code from the multiplayer interface.
- Plan maintenance. Back up the world before updates or mods, and restart the process after patching so every client and the server run the same build.
What Valheim is best for
Valheim is the clearest choice of the three for a mixed PC-and-Xbox group that wants a world available while the usual host is away. The trade-off is that someone must supply and maintain the PC or rented server; the Xbox cannot replace that host role.
Enshrouded: dedicated servers are supported, but cross-play is not yet confirmed live
Dedicated-server availability
Keen Games’ FAQ says dedicated servers are intended for players who do not want friends to depend on the original host being online. It names GPORTAL as a rental collaboration and notes that other providers may be used. A May 13, 2025 development update documents separate player-hosted and dedicated-server lists and performance work for dedicated servers, indicating that dedicated infrastructure is a supported part of the game rather than only a theoretical feature.
You can therefore pursue an always-on Enshrouded world through a rented service or self-managed hosting where the current build and platform support it. The FAQ does not establish a single universal setup procedure, pricing schedule or maximum capacity; those details depend on the provider and the version you deploy.
Is Enshrouded cross-platform multiplayer available now?
Do not assume that a dedicated server also means cross-play. The official FAQ describes a Steam-first launch and says PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S would follow after development was complete. An October 15, 2026 PC Gamer comparison lists Enshrouded cross-play as planned for a future update, not as a live feature. On the evidence available here, PC, PlayStation and Xbox players should be treated as unable to share a session unless Keen Games publishes a newer announcement confirming the feature.
This status is especially important when selecting a host. A server can be persistent for players on the same supported ecosystem while still failing to connect friends on another platform. Confirm the platform matrix in the game’s current release notes before paying for a long-term rental.
Practical Enshrouded hosting checklist
- Verify that the server software version matches every player’s game build.
- Choose a provider or machine that explicitly supports the current Enshrouded dedicated-server release.
- Set a password and restrict administrative access.
- Use the provider’s server list or the game’s dedicated-server browser to confirm that the world is visible.
- Test with the intended group before transferring a mature save; a player-hosted save and a dedicated-server save may need an explicit migration process.
- Back up the world before updates, configuration changes or mod installation.
What Enshrouded is best for
Enshrouded fits a group that values a persistent server and is comfortable playing within the platforms currently supported by the same multiplayer environment. It is not the safe pick for a PC-console party that needs cross-play today, because the cited current comparison still marks that capability as future work.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds: live cross-play and a six-player dedicated server
Platforms and cross-play
Jagex announced the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release for September 15, 2026, with dedicated-server support. The dated comparison covering the launch reports cross-play across those three platforms. A group can therefore mix PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players in the same multiplayer experience, subject to matching updates and the server’s access settings.

Dedicated-server capacity
Jagex’s how-to guide states, “The server can support up to 6 players as of 0.11 (March 2026).” Treat six as a version-specific ceiling, not a permanent design promise. The guide lists three routes: a commercial host such as Shockbyte, a home computer, or self-managed cloud hosting. A December 8, 2025 announcement had placed dedicated servers on the roadmap for update 0.11, provisionally targeted for the end of March; the guide confirms the feature’s operation on that version.
Unlike Valheim’s Xbox warning, the cited Dragonwilds material does not say that a console can or cannot run the server process. It does establish that the documented hosting environments are a home computer, cloud infrastructure or a provider. In practice, console players should plan to connect to one of those hosts rather than treating the console installation as the server machine.
Setting up a Dragonwilds persistent world
- Select a hosting route. Use a provider, a computer that can stay online, or a cloud instance you administer yourself.
- Deploy the version-0.11 server package. Keep the server on the same release as the clients; the six-player figure is tied specifically to 0.11.
- Configure access. Create the world, password and administrator list using the host’s control panel or the server configuration files supplied with the deployment.
- Open connectivity where necessary. Home and self-managed cloud servers may require firewall and port-forwarding rules. Managed hosts normally provide these through their dashboard.
- Invite the group. Share the server’s address or listing details and verify that PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S clients can see it.
- Maintain the save. Schedule backups, monitor storage and apply game updates during a planned maintenance window.
Physical editions and multiplayer
The official FAQ says the Standard and Deluxe editions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 include a physical disc. That packaging detail does not alter cross-play or server limits; it only describes how those console editions are distributed.
What Dragonwilds is best for
Dragonwilds is the strongest fit for a three-platform party that needs cross-play now and can organize its group around a six-player dedicated-server limit. Larger communities should account for that cap before choosing it as a shared persistent world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game keeps running when the host is offline?
| Need | Best-supported choice from the cited facts | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PC and Xbox cross-play with an always-on world | Valheim | Cross-play is live, and Xbox can join a dedicated server hosted on a computer or rented service. |
| Persistent server without relying on a player-hosted session | Valheim, Enshrouded or Dragonwilds | All three have dedicated-server support in the cited material, but Enshrouded’s cross-play status remains unresolved and Dragonwilds is capped at six players on 0.11. |
| PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in one group | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | Cross-play across those platforms is reported as live from the September 15, 2026 launch. |
| More than six players on one dedicated world | Enshrouded or Valheim, subject to the current server rules | The 2026 comparison lists 16 for Enshrouded and 10 for Valheim, while Dragonwilds’ official 0.11 guide specifies six. |
“Host offline” still has a technical condition: the dedicated process must remain powered, connected and authenticated. A laptop that sleeps, a home router that blocks the port or a server stopped for an update is not an always-on world, regardless of the game’s feature list.
Self-hosting versus renting
Self-hosting at home
- Advantages: no separate game-server subscription, direct control of files and backups, and freedom to schedule updates.
- Costs and effort: electricity, hardware capacity, upload bandwidth, firewall configuration, port forwarding and troubleshooting when the home connection fails.
- Best for: an owner comfortable managing a small server and able to leave a machine online.
Cloud or managed hosting
- Advantages: an external network connection, provider dashboards, easier restarts and less dependence on the host’s home power supply.
- Costs and effort: recurring rental fees, provider-specific limits and possible migration work if the service changes its supported game version.
- Best for: groups that want persistence without maintaining networking equipment themselves.
No prices are established in the cited material, so compare a provider’s current monthly rate, backup policy, storage, region, player cap and version support rather than relying on an old figure.
Troubleshooting cross-play and dedicated-server failures
The server is visible but a friend cannot join
- Confirm that cross-play is actually live for the game and platform pair. This is the central unresolved issue for Enshrouded.
- Check that every player and the server use the same game version.
- Re-enter the password or join code carefully; code-based systems are case-sensitive or time-limited where the game specifies those rules.
- For a home server, verify the firewall and router port-forwarding rule and test from outside the host’s local network.
The world disappears when the owner logs out
You are probably running a player-hosted session rather than the dedicated process. Start the dedicated server separately and confirm that the world is listed before the owner closes the game client.
Recommended Free Tools
A server update breaks the save or connection
Stop the server, make a dated backup of the world files, update the server package, then update clients. If the game supports mods, remove or update them one at a time; do not overwrite the only copy of a working save.
The player limit is unclear
Use the limit tied to the exact version and source. For Dragonwilds, Jagex specifies six players on 0.11. The 10-player Valheim and 16-player Enshrouded figures come from PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison and may not describe every configuration, mod or future patch.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each group
- Mixed PC and Xbox group: choose Valheim if you can provide a PC or rented dedicated host; Xbox can join but cannot host.
- Friends waiting for Enshrouded cross-play: dedicated servers exist, but wait for an explicit cross-play launch confirmation before assuming PC, PlayStation and Xbox can share one.
- PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S group: Dragonwilds offers the clearest live cross-play path, with a six-player dedicated-server ceiling on version 0.11.
