Sometimes, but Steam does not guarantee that a Vanilla prepaid Visa will work. Before trying to pay, register the card for online purchases if its issuer requires it, then enter the billing address and ZIP code the issuer has on file. Steam may decline a card when those details fail address verification.
Why a Vanilla card may be declined
Vanilla says its Visa gift cards may be used in the U.S. and District of Columbia wherever Visa debit cards are accepted, subject to the cardholder terms. That does not guarantee acceptance for every online purchase or confirm that a particular card is ready for Steam. Steam’s guidance applies to prepaid gift cards generally; it does not specifically promise that Vanilla cards will work.

Two checks are especially relevant:
- Online registration: Steam says most prepaid gift cards must be registered with the issuer before they can be used for online purchases. Check the card instructions or issuer website and complete any required registration before trying again. Steam Support: prepaid gift cards
- Billing address verification: Steam may compare the checkout address with the information held by the bank or card issuer. A mismatch can cause a decline, even if the card has funds. Steam Support: address verification errors
What to do if Steam declines your Vanilla card
- Check the issuer’s online-use instructions. Look on the back of the card or the issuer’s website. Register it if required before making another online purchase.
- Use the issuer’s billing details at checkout. Enter the billing address and ZIP code associated with the card, rather than assuming the address where you live will match the issuer’s records. If the information seems right but Steam still reports an address error, contact the issuer.
- Do not keep retrying a failed payment. If the card continues to be declined, choose another payment method or add funds with a Steam Wallet gift card or code.
- Allow time for a pending hold to clear. Steam says it does not collect money held by a bank after a failed address verification. The bank or issuer controls when the hold is released; Steam’s prepaid-card guidance says this can often take up to 30 days, depending on issuer policy. That is guidance, not a guaranteed release time for every card.
Steam may request billing information during checkout even when you are using Wallet funds or a local payment method. If you do not have billing information to provide, Steam instructs you to enter your name and physical address. Steam Support: billing information
