The evidence supports narrower claims. A small proportion of players develop gaming disorder, a pattern of impaired control that can seriously damage daily life. Violent game content is a risk factor for aggression-related outcomes. Excessive play is associated with concerns about physical activity, sleep, eyesight, and mood. What the evidence does not show is that games cause violent crime, that ordinary play harms society at large, or that any particular number of hours is harmful in itself.
Three different questions hidden in one title
“Negative impact on society” bundles together claims at different levels. One is about an individual’s pattern of play: has it tipped into something clinically significant? Another is about content: does what people play, especially violent material, shape how they think and act? A third is about daily life: does gaming displace sleep, schooling, work, exercise, or relationships? Each question rests on different evidence, and most overstatement happens when they are treated as one.
Gaming disorder: a pattern of impairment, not a play count
The World Health Organization’s description of gaming disorder in ICD-11 is the most precise official standard available. It rests on three features:
- Impaired control over gaming.
- Gaming takes increasing priority over other interests and daily activities.
- Gaming continues or escalates despite negative consequences.
Those features alone are not enough. WHO specifies that the pattern must be severe enough to cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning, and that it would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. In its Q&A on addictive behaviours, dated 22 October 2020, WHO states: “Studies suggest that gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who engage in digital- or video-gaming activities.” That is a qualitative statement, not a percentage, so no reliable prevalence figure should be read into it.

Why hours alone do not settle it
Long sessions can be a prompt to look more closely, but WHO does not define a universal number of hours that makes someone disordered. A player who logs long sessions while keeping sleep, schoolwork, jobs, meals, and friendships intact is not showing the pattern WHO describes. The diagnostic question is whether gaming has taken control and is causing significant impairment.
| Feature | Heavy but unimpaired play | Pattern WHO describes as gaming disorder |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Control is not described as impaired | Control over gaming is impaired |
| Priority | Gaming does not consistently outrank other interests | Gaming takes increasing priority over other interests and activities |
| Consequences | Play does not continue despite significant harm | Play continues or escalates despite negative consequences |
| Impairment | No significant impairment in important areas of functioning | Significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas |
| Duration | No diagnostic duration applies | Would normally have been evident for at least 12 months |
| Prevalence | Most people who play | A small proportion of people who play, according to WHO’s 2020 statement |
Violent content and aggression
The most detailed review in this area is the American Psychological Association Task Force assessment, published in American Psychologist in 2017. It reviewed studies published from 2009 through 2013, combining a systematic review of the evidence with a meta-analysis of studies judged to have high utility. The review reported that exposure to violent video games was associated with:

What “risk factor” means here
The task force’s central conclusion, in the words of its lead authors Sandra L. Calvert and colleagues (2017), was: “Our task force concluded that violent video game use is a risk factor for adverse outcomes, but found insufficient studies to examine any potential link between violent video game use and delinquency or criminal behavior.”
A risk factor raises the likelihood of an outcome across a population. It does not predict what any individual will do, and it is not the same as a cause of crime. The measured outcomes in this review are aggression-related: thoughts, feelings, behavior in study settings, empathy, and arousal. Criminal violence is a different outcome, and it is the one the review explicitly found too little evidence to assess.

Physical and health concerns linked to excessive play
WHO lists health concerns associated with gaming behaviour, particularly excessive patterns:
- Insufficient physical activity
- Unhealthy diet
- Eyesight or hearing problems
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Sleep deprivation
- Aggressive behavior
- Depression
- Changes in psychosocial functioning
These are associations to monitor, not outcomes that playing guarantees. WHO’s practical guidance is to notice when gaming crowds out daily activities, and whether physical or psychological health or social functioning changes.

What the evidence does not establish at the level of society
Broader claims about games and society go further than the WHO and APA material supports:
- A general decline in education, family life, or social connection. The evidence does not establish a single population-wide effect on these outcomes. Where they are discussed, the evidence is mixed, and claims should be phrased accordingly.
- Offsetting benefits of play. WHO’s 2018 public-health framing recognises clear benefits from digital technologies alongside documented negative health consequences in some cases. This article measures harms and does not weigh the benefits of play, which would need separate review.

- List a typical week’s sleep, school or work, meals, physical activity, and in-person time with friends and family. Note where gaming has taken time previously used for these.
- Test control directly. Agree on a stopping point before a session and see whether it holds, especially when the player wants to stop.
- Check priorities. Ask whether other interests have been dropped or are consistently losing out to play.
- Watch what happens after gaming causes a problem. Continuing or escalating play after missed sleep, falling grades, conflict, or health complaints is the pattern WHO describes.
- Track duration. A diagnosis would normally require this pattern for at least 12 months. Shorter periods of difficulty are not a diagnosis, but they are worth recording so changes are not missed.
When several of these signs appear together and persist, speaking with a doctor or a school counsellor is a reasonable next step.
