Steam Input can translate what your physical controller sends into an emulated Xbox controller, and the game receives that emulated device. The game then shows Xbox-style input and button prompts. The Xbox label describes what the game is reading, not what hardware is plugged in.
What Steam Input is doing
Steam Input sits between your controller and the game. It reads the buttons, sticks, and triggers from your hardware and translates them into a form games understand. Valve lists Steam Controller, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Pro, PlayStation 3, and DirectInput gamepads among the supported devices. So a PlayStation or Switch controller can work in Steam without being a native Xbox device.
How an Xbox identity reaches the game
The key mechanism is emulation. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains that on Windows, the Steam Overlay can hook the traditional gamepad input APIs and inject an emulated Xbox controller device. The documentation states:
“On Windows the Steam Overlay will hook traditional gamepad input APIs such as XInput, DirectInput, RawInput, and Windows.Gaming.Input and inject an emulated Xbox controller device.”

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
This is the most direct explanation for why a game may report Xbox-style input when a non-Xbox controller is connected. The same guidance describes this behavior for Windows, so this article does not claim the identical path applies on other operating systems.
Recognition and identity are different questions
Steam recognizing your controller and a game identifying the input device are related but separate. A controller can be detected correctly by Steam while the game still sees an emulated Xbox device. If you are trying to confirm your hardware, the game’s reported device name is not a reliable test on its own.

Why prompts vary from game to game
Even when the emulated Xbox device is in use, what you see on screen depends on the game. Steam Support notes that a configuration may not work as expected if the game does not support the input style you selected. In practice, one game may show Xbox icons, another may show PlayStation icons, and a third may ignore the Steam setting altogether.
The official guidance does not document a universal setting that forces every game to display your physical controller’s button labels. Expect per-game behavior, and check each game’s own controller options first.

Prompts versus real input problems
The Xbox label alone is usually a display question. Input that stops working, double-registers, or moves on its own is a different problem. Use this table to separate them.
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox button labels on a PlayStation, Switch, or other non-Xbox controller | Expected emulation, or the game’s own prompt handling | Nothing is broken. Check the game’s controller settings for an input style option. |
| Labels are correct in one game and wrong in another | Game-specific controller support | Compare the game’s settings. The behavior is tied to that game, not to Steam globally. |
| Buttons do not respond | Input malfunction | Run the troubleshooting steps below. |
| Double input or unexpected movement | Conflicting input sources | Isolate the controller and check for conflicting software. |
Troubleshooting input malfunctions
If a controller is actually misbehaving, Steam Support’s documented basics are a reasonable starting point. These steps address input conflicts. They are not a fix for Xbox button prompts.

- Check for conflicting software, such as XInput emulators, and disable it temporarily.
- Reconnect the controller and test it in the game.
If the controller still fails after these steps, the problem is more likely hardware, driver, or game-specific and needs a separate investigation.

What is and is not established
- Established: Steam Input can present an emulated Xbox controller to a game, as described in Valve’s Steamworks documentation for Windows.
- Established: a game’s own controller support and the selected input style affect how configurations behave, according to Steam Support.
- Not established: a single global Steam setting that changes every game’s button labels to match your hardware.
- Not established: how common this behavior is across the Steam library. No measured prevalence figure is available from the official sources reviewed.
- Menu names and locations in the Steam client and in individual games change over time. Confirm the exact option in your version of each.
