What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. In ordinary, unmodified Minecraft, villagers do not naturally despawn in either Java or Bedrock Edition. A villager that goes missing was more likely killed, turned into a zombie villager, moved somewhere unexpected, or affected by a bug or customized game behavior.
Do villagers despawn when you go far away?
Not under the ordinary vanilla mechanics covered here: distance alone does not make a villager naturally despawn. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes explicitly list villagers as an exception to the natural mob despawn rules described there. The Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics summary also says villagers have persistence in both editions. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes and the Minecraft Wiki’s spawn mechanics summary support this distinction.
The official Bedrock note is from June 23, 2020, and is not a version-by-version guarantee for every later release. The Java persistence summary is from a community reference, not a current-version Mojang statement. If you play a newer, modified, or server-customized version, its behavior may differ.
Why did my villager disappear?
A villager being absent is not proof that it despawned. Check the likely alternatives before concluding what happened:
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- It was killed. Look for nearby dark areas, exposed routes, and openings where hostile mobs might have reached it.
- It became a zombie villager. A zombie attack can convert a villager, with the outcome depending on edition and difficulty. That is a transformation, not natural despawning; see the Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics summary.
- It moved or became trapped. Search nearby paths, water, connected rooms, and other spaces it could have reached.
- Your world uses customized behavior, or encountered a bug. Mods, add-ons, server plugins, and bugs can produce behavior outside the vanilla mechanics described above. The cause in a particular world cannot be established without details about its edition, version, configuration, and what happened.
Do you need a name tag to stop villagers despawning?
No. A name tag is not needed to prevent a normal villager from naturally despawning under these mechanics, because villagers already have persistence. Naming also should not be treated as protection against death, zombie conversion, bugs, or behavior changed by mods or server settings. Mojang’s Bedrock notes describe persistent mobs and separately list villagers as an exception to the despawn rules.
What about a villager struck by lightning?
Mojang’s Java snapshot 20W22A notes a specific case: a villager that had been traded with and is struck by lightning converts into a witch that will no longer despawn. This concerns the converted witch, not an ordinary villager naturally despawning. See Mojang’s Java snapshot 20W22A notes (May 29, 2020).

What to check if it happens again
To narrow down a disappearance, note whether you are playing Java or Bedrock, the game version, and whether the world is vanilla, modded, or on a customized server. Also consider what happened immediately beforehand, such as a zombie getting close or a change to the world. Those details help distinguish ordinary mechanics from a death, conversion, movement, bug, or custom behavior.
