Yes—in both the 2014 and 2024 versions of D&D fifth edition, a wizard adds two chosen spells to their spellbook when gaining a wizard level after 1st. Those spells are not automatically prepared for casting. The exact rules depend on which edition your table uses.
What happens when a wizard levels up?
At wizard level-up, choose two eligible Wizard spells and add them to your spellbook. The rules grant the additions, but you choose the spells; they are not a fixed package. The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
2014 rules
The 2014 Basic Rules for the Wizard say that each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Eligibility is based on spell levels for which you have spell slots. Use the 2014 Player’s Handbook if your table follows that ruleset.
2024 rules
The 2024 Free Rules for the Wizard preserve the two-spell addition: whenever you gain a Wizard level after 1st, add two chosen Wizard spells to your spellbook, at eligible spell levels for which you have spell slots. Use the 2024 Player’s Handbook if your table follows the updated rules. D&D Beyond labels the updated fifth-edition material “5.5e” and the 2014 material “5e”; follow the edition your group has adopted, rather than mixing the two presentations (official edition comparison).

Are the new spells automatically prepared?
No. A spell in your spellbook is not necessarily prepared. You choose prepared spells separately, and only prepared spells are available to cast under the class’s preparation rules.
- 2014: Choose prepared spells from your spellbook. The number is your wizard level plus your Intelligence modifier, with a minimum of one.
- 2024: Use the Prepared Spells column of the Wizard Features table to determine how many level 1+ spells you can have prepared.
After recording your two new spells, check your edition’s preparation rule and decide whether to include them among your prepared spells.

Do cantrips count as the two spells?
No. Cantrips follow a separate progression and are not part of the two level-up spellbook additions. In the 2014 rules, use the class table’s Cantrips Known column. In the 2024 rules, the Wizard gains additional cantrips at levels 4 and 10.
Can a wizard learn spells in other ways?
Yes. In both editions, a wizard can copy an eligible found spell into their spellbook by following that edition’s spellbook procedure. Copying is separate from the two free additions gained on a wizard level-up and requires time and money. See the 2014 spellbook rules or the 2024 Wizard rules for the applicable procedure.

What if the character is multiclassed?
Under the 2014 multiclass rules, track spell progression for each class individually. Gaining a character level in another class does not itself trigger the wizard’s two spellbook additions; the character must gain a wizard level. The multiclass rules also direct players to determine spells known and prepared for each class separately (2014 multiclassing rules).
