Multiplayer is a separate free-to-play component on PC and Xbox, so neither player needs to purchase Campaign just to play competitive or social matches or progress the Battle Pass. If you mean online Campaign co-op, Campaign access is required for the players’ accounts, either through a purchase or an eligible Xbox Game Pass membership. Official support does not confirm that one Campaign purchase covers two separate accounts, so do not assume a single copy is enough.
Halo Support’s free-to-play FAQ explicitly separates the free multiplayer from the paid Campaign.

First, identify which Halo Infinite experience you mean
The phrase “buy Halo Infinite” is confusing because the game is distributed as two components. The free multiplayer download and the paid story Campaign appear as separate products in the PC and Xbox storefronts. Your answer depends entirely on which one you and the other player want to use.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you want to play | Do both players need Campaign? | Important setup detail |
|---|---|---|
| Free online multiplayer | No. Campaign purchase is not required. | Download the multiplayer component separately. Halo Support says multiplayer is free on PC and Xbox. |
| Online Campaign co-op | Both accounts need access to Campaign, but the official pages reviewed do not say whether one purchase can serve two separate accounts. | Use Campaign Network Co-Op and form a Campaign Fireteam. Cross-play supports PC and Xbox players together. |
| Same-console split-screen | Campaign split-screen is not documented. | Halo Support documents split-screen for competitive Multiplayer on Xbox consoles, using a second controller and Xbox account. |
The safest rule is simple: neither player buys Campaign for ordinary multiplayer; for online story co-op, make sure each player’s account has a confirmed way to access Campaign before starting.

Free multiplayer does not require buying Campaign
Halo Support states that Halo Infinite multiplayer is free to download and play on both PC and Xbox consoles. You do not need to buy Campaign to play multiplayer or make progress on the Battle Pass. That means two friends can install the free multiplayer component, sign in with their own accounts and play together without purchasing the story mode.
The free component includes the normal online multiplayer experience rather than a time-limited trial. Campaign is a separate product, so seeing a Campaign price in a store does not mean the free multiplayer has become locked behind that purchase. On PC, the installation guide lists Steam and the Xbox app as download routes. On Xbox consoles, it lists the Microsoft Store and the Game Pass app. Use the listing that corresponds to your platform and install multiplayer independently of Campaign.
Halo Support’s wording is specific to multiplayer. It does not grant access to the Campaign missions, open-world progression or Campaign Network Co-Op. Those require Campaign access.
Campaign co-op is a different entitlement
Each player needs a way to access the story
For online Campaign co-op, Halo Support describes Campaign as something you purchase or receive through some Xbox Game Pass memberships. “Some” is important: Game Pass catalog inclusion, tier names and regional availability can change. Check the live listing for your country and the exact membership on each account instead of assuming that every Game Pass plan includes Campaign.
The official material reviewed does not resolve the account-sharing question. It does not state that one digital purchase automatically licenses Campaign to a second, separately signed-in player joining online co-op. Therefore, do not budget on a one-copy arrangement unless the Xbox or Microsoft account interface explicitly shows Campaign access for both accounts. If one player owns the game and the other sees a purchase prompt, that account lacks the entitlement required by the current platform check.

PC and Xbox players can play together
Halo Support identifies Campaign Network Co-Op as an online play option and says cross-play allows PC and Xbox players to play together. A PC owner and an Xbox owner can therefore join the same Campaign Fireteam when both accounts and installations meet the current requirements. Cross-play does not remove the Campaign-access requirement; it only describes where the players are connecting from.
Up to four players can join
The friends guide says Campaign Network Co-Op Fireteams can contain up to four players. The same Campaign-access and account checks apply to every member, so adding a third or fourth player does not turn Campaign into a free mode.
How to install the right component
On PC
- Choose the PC storefront you intend to use: Steam or the Xbox app, as listed in Halo Support’s installation guide.
- Install the free Halo Infinite multiplayer component if you only want competitive or social matches.
- If you want the story, open Halo Infinite’s main menu, choose Campaign and follow the purchase prompts, or verify that your current Game Pass membership includes Campaign.
- Both players should sign in to their own platform accounts before attempting to invite one another. This makes it clear which account has the Campaign entitlement.
On Xbox consoles
- Search the Microsoft Store or Game Pass app for Halo Infinite and install the free multiplayer component.
- For the story mode, select Campaign from the game’s main menu and follow the on-screen purchase flow, or launch it through a membership that includes Campaign.
- Have the second player check Campaign from their own signed-in account. A shared console showing the game installed is not, by itself, proof that both online accounts can launch the story.
The installation guide also explains storefront portability. A Campaign purchase made through Xbox or the Microsoft PC storefront uses Xbox Play Anywhere and carries across those two Microsoft storefronts. A Campaign purchase made on Steam remains available through Steam; it does not become a Steam-and-Xbox entitlement merely because the same person owns an Xbox account.
How to start Campaign Network Co-Op
- Launch Halo Infinite and load into Campaign first. Halo Support’s Campaign installation FAQ says players must enter Campaign before inviting others to the Campaign-based Fireteam.
- From the Campaign menu, open the Fireteam or friends interface and invite the other player through the platform’s friend list.
- Wait for the invited player to appear in the Campaign Fireteam, then begin the session. The Network Co-Op option is online; it is not the same feature as Xbox split-screen multiplayer.
- If you switch from Campaign to Multiplayer, leave the current Fireteam and reform it after changing modes. Halo Support says the Campaign and Multiplayer Fireteams are handled separately.
If an invite fails, first confirm that both players are in Campaign rather than one remaining at the Multiplayer menu. Then check that each account can launch Campaign independently and that cross-play or privacy settings are not blocking the invitation.
Split-screen: what two people can do on one Xbox
Halo Support documents local split-screen for competitive Multiplayer on Xbox consoles. The second local player needs another controller and a second Xbox account. Guest accounts are not supported for this multiplayer split-screen setup.

- Halo Infinite multiplayer is free to play on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.
This documentation does not describe Campaign split-screen. Consequently, two people should not buy or install Campaign expecting to play the story locally on one console. The supported Campaign co-op path in the cited guidance is Network Co-Op over an online connection, with players joining a Campaign Fireteam from their own accounts and devices.

Online subscription requirements are not stated consistently
There is a conflict between two current official pages that matters mainly to Xbox-console players. Halo Support’s installation guide says: “You do not need an active Game Pass subscription to play Halo Infinite multiplayer online on any platform.” That wording includes Xbox consoles.
However, the current Xbox Campaign store listing says: “Online multiplayer on console requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).” The statement appears on the Campaign product page and is direct product-page language from Xbox.
Because those official statements do not align, check the live subscription prompt shown on your console and the exact mode you are launching. Do not infer a universal rule from an old purchase, a different region or a different Game Pass tier. The requirement may also be presented differently for free multiplayer and Campaign-related online play. If the console asks for Essential, Premium or Ultimate, that is the requirement your current account and platform are enforcing.
For PC players, this particular console-subscription wording does not apply. PC users still need the appropriate Microsoft or Steam account, the game installation and any Campaign entitlement required by the mode they are launching.

Common situations and the correct answer
“We only want ranked, social or custom multiplayer.”
Neither player needs to buy Campaign. Install the free multiplayer component and use separate accounts. Battle Pass progress is also available without purchasing the story.
“I own Campaign and my friend wants to join my story.”
Do not assume your purchase automatically covers your friend’s separate account. Have your friend verify Campaign access through a purchase or an eligible membership. The official support pages reviewed do not define a one-purchase online-sharing entitlement.
“One of us is on PC and one is on Xbox.”
Cross-play supports that combination for online play, including Campaign Network Co-Op. Both players still need the relevant installation and Campaign access for the story mode.
“We are sitting on the same Xbox.”
Use the documented split-screen route for competitive Multiplayer: a second controller and a second Xbox account. Campaign split-screen is not established by the cited support instructions, so use online Network Co-Op for the story instead.
“We bought through different PC stores.”
Microsoft-store Xbox Play Anywhere purchases carry between Xbox and the Microsoft PC storefront. Steam Campaign purchases stay with Steam. Confirm each player’s storefront before troubleshooting missing access.
Troubleshooting an unexpected purchase prompt
- Check the mode: A Campaign purchase prompt is expected when selecting the story without Campaign access; it does not mean free multiplayer requires payment.
- Check the signed-in account: A console can have the game installed while the currently signed-in account lacks the entitlement.
- Check membership tier and region: Game Pass Campaign inclusion is described only for some memberships and can vary by region.
- Check the storefront: Steam and Microsoft/Xbox purchases are not interchangeable in the same way. Launch the version associated with the purchase.
- Check Fireteam state: Load into Campaign before inviting. If you changed to Multiplayer, leave and reform the appropriate Fireteam.
- Check console subscription messaging: If Xbox displays a requirement for Essential, Premium or Ultimate, follow that current prompt because the official pages provide conflicting general guidance.
Bottom line for two players
For free Halo Infinite multiplayer, both players can play without buying Campaign. For online Campaign co-op, Campaign access is required and the documented support does not confirm that one purchase licenses two separate accounts. Verify each player’s entitlement, use Campaign Network Co-Op for online play, and treat Xbox’s current subscription prompt as authoritative for the console and mode in front of you.
