Usually, no. Uninstalling Minecraft does not by itself cancel your purchase. Reinstall it through the store or platform where you originally bought it, using the account that owns the game. If the store asks you to buy it again, check the account and purchase history before paying.
How to reinstall Minecraft without buying it again
- Identify the original store. Check whether you bought Minecraft through Microsoft Store or Xbox, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Apple App Store, Google Play, Steam, or another platform. Minecraft’s EULA says purchases outside Microsoft platforms are governed by the respective platform’s terms.
- Sign in to the purchasing account. Open that store’s library, owned games, or order history and look for Minecraft. For a Microsoft purchase, check the Microsoft account’s order history and the purchase confirmation email. Minecraft Support’s guidance is: “Verify you are signing into the Microsoft account you used to buy Minecraft.” See Minecraft’s sign-in troubleshooting page.
- Install from that store. Use its owned-game or library listing to download the edition you previously purchased. A license on one platform should not be assumed to include a copy on another.
If Minecraft still shows a Buy button or no Play button
Check both Microsoft accounts on PC
If you use Minecraft Launcher, make sure the Launcher and Microsoft Store are both signed in with the account that owns the game. Minecraft notes that a missing Play button can occur when the signed-in account does not own Minecraft. Sign out of both apps, then sign back in with the purchasing account and check again. A PC Game Pass subscription may also provide access while the subscription remains applicable; that is subscription access, not proof of a permanent purchase. See Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting.
Check for another account or platform
Many players have more than one Microsoft, console, or app-store account. Look for the original receipt and check purchase history on the likely accounts. A Microsoft account used for cross-platform play does not prove that a separately purchased PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Google Play, or Steam copy is owned through Microsoft.
Refresh the sign-in if authentication seems stuck
Minecraft’s account sign-in instructions cover signing out and back in on the Launcher, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Follow the steps for the device where you are trying to play.

Why platform and edition matter
The purchase is tied to the store and account through which you acquired it, subject to that platform’s terms. Minecraft’s EULA distinguishes Microsoft-platform purchases from purchases through PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Google Play, and Steam. If you cannot find the license, check the original platform before concluding you need to buy the game again.
Minecraft’s account guide says Java and Bedrock editions are bundled together on PC, but that does not mean a PC purchase includes separate console or mobile store licenses. Confirm the edition and device you originally bought. See Minecraft’s account guide.

- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
There is also a legacy-account exception that is unrelated to uninstalling: Minecraft says Mojang-account migration ended on December 18, 2023. Its migration information explains that an unmigrated account may need a new Java Edition purchase with a Microsoft account to continue playing.
Will deleting Minecraft also delete your worlds?
Not necessarily—but restoring the game license does not restore local worlds or other files deleted from your device. Back up worlds and any other data you want to keep before uninstalling or deleting app data. Minecraft’s manual Java Edition uninstall instructions explain which local data paths to consider and warn that “Minecraft support cannot recover any deleted files.” Save-file behavior on other devices depends on the platform and how the game or its data was removed.

Base game purchases are separate from Marketplace content
A restored base-game license and ownership of add-ons are distinct questions. For Nintendo Switch, Minecraft says Marketplace purchases are associated with the Nintendo account context and do not transfer to other platforms; this guidance concerns Marketplace content, not whether you own the base game on Switch. See Minecraft’s Switch account guidance. Check the account and store tied to the specific pack, skin, or other content.
