Yes. If a Sims 4 mod downloads as a .zip or .rar archive, extract it first, then place the actual mod file in your Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods folder. Don’t put the compressed archive itself in Mods. A loose .package file can go straight into the folder.
How to install an archived mod
- Download the mod on a PC or Mac from a source you trust. EA says it does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific mods or custom content. EA’s installation instructions explain the supported process.
- Check the downloaded file. If it ends in
.zip,.rar, or.7z, extract the archive using your computer’s extraction option or an archive utility. The extracted contents—not the archive—are what you install. - Move the extracted mod file or files into
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. If there is no Mods folder, EA says you can create one. Make sure you use the Sims 4 folder in your user Documents, not a similarly named folder in the game’s installation directory. EA’s community guide to mods and custom content covers file placement and folder depth. - Start the game and open
Game Options > Other. Check Enable Custom Content and Mods, apply the change, and relaunch The Sims 4.
What to put in the Mods folder
Loose package files
A standalone .package file is already extracted. Put it directly in Mods, or in a suitable subfolder.
Script mods and subfolders
Extract archives before placing their contents in Mods; the archive itself will not install the mod. The EA community guide says .ts4script files must be no more than one folder deep inside Mods. Package-only content can be nested up to five folders deep. Follow the creator’s installation instructions if they specify additional steps or requirements.
Downloaded Sims and lots
Files for Sims or lots downloaded outside the Gallery may include both custom-content .package files and Tray files. Put the CC files in Mods and the associated Tray files in the game’s Tray folder; they are not installed in the same place.

Does this work on console?
No. EA’s mod-installation instructions apply to PC and Mac. EA says mods cannot be downloaded on PlayStation or Xbox.

If the mod does not appear in the game
- Check its location: Confirm that the extracted mod files are in
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. - Check the setting and restart: In
Game Options > Other, verify that Enable Custom Content and Mods is checked, then relaunch the game. - Check update compatibility: Game updates can disable mods or make them incompatible. EA advises checking with the mod creator about compatibility with the latest update. See EA’s guidance on mods and game updates.
