Save data is less certain: Xbox does not promise that every title will carry over every save, checkpoint, or unlock. Whether you can resume exactly where you stopped depends on that game’s save system, connected storage, account, edition, and platform compatibility.
Before the event ends, use the same Xbox account, connect the console to the internet, and let the game finish synchronizing. Then verify the publisher’s support information before buying a different edition or platform version.

What happens when Free Play Days ends?
Free Play Days is limited-time access for eligible Game Pass members. The lineup changes from event to event, and eligibility, game availability, editions, and discounts can vary by title and region. During the event, the game runs with a temporary full license rather than a conventional trial that merely limits playtime. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes this licensing model and explains that access ends when the event ends unless you own the game or have another entitlement.

The game may remain installed on your console, but installation alone does not provide an entitlement to continue playing. You need to purchase the game or an eligible edition, or use another active entitlement that includes the same title and platform family.

Do achievements and Gamerscore carry over?
Yes, when you purchase the game or another edition covered by the event offer, Xbox says you can continue playing while keeping the Gamerscore and achievements earned during Free Play Days. Xbox Wire stated on September 10, 2026: “Purchase the game and other editions at a limited time discount and continue playing while keeping your Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event!”
Achievements are associated with your Xbox account, so the critical requirement is to keep using the account that played the event. Do not switch to a different profile when you buy or launch the full game. If an achievement appears delayed, connect the console to Xbox services and allow the account to synchronize before assuming it was lost.
The published promise is specifically made in the context of purchasing the game or another edition. It confirms retention of achievements and Gamerscore; it does not turn every game’s save system into a guaranteed cross-edition transfer system.

Will your save file carry over?
Save carryover is title-specific, not a blanket Xbox guarantee. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation says that moving progress from Free Play Days into a purchased game depends on the title’s save implementation and connected storage. Two games can therefore behave differently even when both were available through the same event.
When carryover is most likely to work
- You sign in with the same Xbox account used during Free Play Days.
- You buy the same Xbox title and a compatible platform or cross-generation edition.
- The game stores progress through the same connected or cloud-save system after synchronization.
- The publisher supports transfer between the specific editions you are considering.
Why a save can fail to appear
- The purchased version is a different title, platform build, region, or edition with separate save handling.
- The game had not finished uploading or synchronizing before the event license expired.
- The title uses local or otherwise separate save data rather than a shared connected-storage implementation.
- You launched the purchased game under another Xbox account.
- The publisher imposes a cross-generation or cross-edition restriction.
A save that does not appear is not evidence that Xbox deliberately deleted it. The practical issue is whether the new entitlement can read the save created by that game build and account. Check the game publisher’s support page for compatibility rules before relying on a transfer.
What to do before Free Play Days ends
Use this checklist while you still have access to the event license:

- Confirm the account. Note the Xbox account and profile that earned the achievements and created the save. Use that same account for any later purchase and launch.
- Finish a normal save. Use the game’s own save or checkpoint command, then return to a safe point rather than closing the title during a loading or saving operation.
- Go online. Keep the console connected to Xbox services and wait for the game to complete its save synchronization. Do not assume that a recent checkpoint has uploaded simply because it appeared on screen.
- Record the exact version. Note the title, platform family, generation, and edition you played. This helps you avoid buying a version that uses incompatible save data.
- Check support information. Look for the publisher’s guidance on cross-generation saves, cross-edition transfers, cloud saves, and regional restrictions.
- Compare the entitlement. Confirm that the purchase or subscription entitlement includes the same game and platform family, not merely a similarly named spin-off or bundle component.
These steps cannot force a game to support transfer, but they remove the most common account, synchronization, and compatibility causes of missing progress.

Choosing what to do after the event
You have three practical routes: buy a digital edition, buy a physical Xbox disc, or wait for another subscription entitlement. The right choice depends less on the word “trial” than on whether the new entitlement can access the same save system.

Buying digitally
A digital purchase is usually the simplest entitlement match when the store listing identifies the same game and platform family you played. Confirm the edition before checkout, especially when a standard version, deluxe version, cross-generation bundle, or separately listed platform build appears in the store. Xbox says discounts and available editions can vary by title and region, so the price shown for your account and location is the one that governs the transaction.

Buying a physical disc
A disc can provide continued access, but ownership of the disc does not itself promise that the Free Play Days save will load. The installed build, account, platform generation, edition, and connected-storage rules still have to line up. Keep the disc available whenever you launch the game, and verify compatibility before assuming that a physical purchase is interchangeable with the event version.
Waiting for another subscription entitlement
Waiting can make sense if the game is likely to return to an entitlement you already use, but availability is not permanent or universal. The Free Play Days lineup changes, and catalog access can differ by region and membership eligibility. Treat a future subscription appearance as a new entitlement decision rather than a promise that your event access will remain active.
If your save is missing after you buy
Work through the checks in this order:
- Close the game and confirm that the purchasing and playing profiles are the same Xbox account.
- Reconnect to Xbox services and allow synchronization to complete before launching again.
- Verify that the purchased listing matches the original title, platform family, region, and edition.
- Check the publisher’s support documentation for cross-generation, cross-edition, and cloud-save restrictions.
- Do not overwrite or delete local data while troubleshooting; doing so can remove the only copy available on that console.
- If the title’s support information says that the versions are compatible and the save still does not appear, contact the publisher’s support team with the account, platform, edition, and approximate last-played time.
Achievements and Gamerscore are a separate issue from save files. Under Xbox’s published Free Play Days guidance, they remain available when you purchase the game or another eligible edition, even if a title-specific save problem prevents your campaign or settings from appearing immediately.

Does the event delete progress?
Free Play Days ending removes the temporary license; it is not described as a universal command to erase every player’s save. Whether progress remains usable is determined by the game’s save implementation and the connected storage associated with your account. That is why Xbox’s announcement can give a clear achievements-and-Gamerscore assurance while Microsoft’s developer documentation qualifies save transfer.
If you do not buy the game, you should expect access to stop when the event ends unless another entitlement covers it. If you do buy it, use the same account and a compatible version, then allow synchronization before judging whether the save carried over.
