No—not automatically. You need a computer that meets the specific shooter’s published requirements for the performance you want. A basic office PC may run a lightweight competitive game, while a recent blockbuster shooter can require a discrete graphics card, more memory, fast storage and a newer graphics API. Some shooters also run on consoles, so buying a PC is not the only route.
The practical test is game-specific: identify the title, choose a frame-rate and resolution target, compare your exact CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and operating-system features with the current official specifications, then check whether an existing console already supports the game.

What “gaming PC” means for an FPS player
A gaming PC is not a single performance level. For first-person shooters, the parts that matter most are the processor (CPU), graphics processor (GPU), system memory (RAM), storage, operating-system version and graphics features such as DirectX support. A machine with integrated graphics can be sufficient for a game whose minimum tier is modest; another title may require a dedicated GPU even before you consider high visual settings.
Publishers usually describe several targets:
- Minimum: the hardware and software needed to launch and play at a basic level. It is not a promise of a particular frame rate on every PC.
- Recommended: a more usable target, sometimes tied to a stated frame rate and settings level.
- Competitive, high-refresh or 4K: a substantially stronger tier intended for high frame rates, high resolutions or demanding presets.
Those labels are specifications, not independent benchmark results. Two computers with parts that appear similar can perform differently because of cooling, power limits, drivers, background software, game updates and laptop-specific hardware.

Start with the game, not the shopping list
- Name the exact game. “Modern FPS” covers lightweight esports games and graphically intensive releases with very different requirements.
- Open the game’s current official requirements page. Check the date and whether the publisher says the figures can change after updates.
- Separate the target tiers. Do not treat a minimum listing as equivalent to a 60-FPS, high-settings or 4K specification.
- Choose your own target. Decide whether you want basic play, 60 FPS, a high-refresh competitive experience or 4K image quality.
- Compare exact components. Check the model of your CPU and GPU, RAM capacity, available storage, Windows edition/build and required APIs or security features.
- Check other platforms. If the game supports a console you already own, a new PC may be unnecessary.
This process avoids the common mistake of buying a computer advertised as a “gaming PC” without verifying that its exact parts meet the chosen game’s current tier.
Case study: VALORANT can run on modest hardware
Riot Games Support publishes three VALORANT PC tiers: a 30 FPS minimum tier, a 60 FPS recommended tier and a high-end tier labeled for 144 FPS. Riot says, “So long as your PC meets our minimum specifications, you’ll have what it takes to play.” That statement applies to VALORANT and Riot’s listed minimum, not to every shooter or to an independently measured frame rate.
| VALORANT tier | Publisher target | CPU examples | Graphics examples | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 30 FPS | Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 | 4 GB RAM |
| Recommended | 60 FPS | Riot labels this tier but the cited page’s component examples are not reproduced here | Component examples not stated here | Use Riot’s current page for the complete tier |
| High-end | 144 FPS | Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | GTX 1050 Ti, Radeon R7 370 or Intel Arc A310 | Use Riot’s current page for any additional tier details |
Riot lists Windows 10 (Build 19041 or newer) 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 11 support and SSE 4.2 or AVX support. On Windows 11, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are required. Riot also states that VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines, so those are not valid workarounds for a computer that fails the supported requirements.
For this game, an older desktop or a modern office laptop may be enough for basic play if it matches the minimum tier. Reaching the 144-FPS tier is a different objective and calls for the stronger CPU and GPU examples Riot lists.
Case study: Black Ops 6 has a much wider hardware range
Activision’s Black Ops 6 specifications show why “can it run an FPS?” has no universal answer. The support page describes desktop-PC requirements, requires broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility, and warns that laptop graphics cards with similar names can be different models and may not be supported.

Activision lists 102 GB of SSD space at launch for Black Ops 6 and says additional space is required for Warzone. Its page displays the date 07/02/25 and notes that specifications may be updated, so verify the current listing before installing or buying hardware. The figures are publisher specifications, not independent tests; the recommended row’s “60 FPS in most situations” is Activision’s stated target, not a guarantee for every system.
Black Ops 6 also demonstrates the console alternative. Activision lists Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions. If you already own one of those supported consoles, you can play this title without purchasing a PC. That platform list should not be generalized to every modern shooter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the Counter-Strike 2 listing does—and does not—tell you
Valve’s Steam listing identifies Counter-Strike 2 as a free-to-play multiplayer competitive FPS and names Valve as its developer and publisher. The retrieved listing did not expose current PC system requirements, so it cannot be used to infer a CPU, GPU or RAM recommendation. Check the live listing or the publisher’s current support information for the specifications that apply to your system.
Can your regular PC run an FPS?
Possibly. A “regular” PC is not disqualified by its case, brand or lack of gaming branding. Compare the actual hardware and software:
- CPU: identify the exact model, not just “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5.” Generations within the same family differ substantially.
- GPU: record the exact graphics model and dedicated video-memory amount. Integrated graphics may satisfy a low minimum tier but not a high-refresh or 4K target.
- RAM: compare installed capacity with the game’s tier. Black Ops 6 lists 8 GB minimum, 12 GB for its recommended 60-FPS tier and 16 GB for competitive/4K Ultra.
- Storage: confirm both free capacity and the required drive type when the publisher specifies one. Black Ops 6 lists 102 GB of SSD space at launch, with more required for Warzone.
- Operating system and features: check Windows version, 64-bit status, DirectX level and, where required, TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot or processor instruction support.
- Laptop limitations: verify the exact laptop GPU. A mobile part that shares a name with a desktop GPU is not necessarily the same model or supported configuration.
If one component falls below the minimum, assume the game is unsupported until the publisher says otherwise. If the PC meets only the minimum, expect to adjust resolution and visual settings and avoid promising a particular frame rate that the publisher did not state.

Choose a performance target before choosing hardware
Basic play
This is the least demanding goal: the game launches, accepts input and remains playable at modest settings. VALORANT’s published 30-FPS minimum illustrates this category. It does not establish how another shooter will behave.

60 FPS
Sixty frames per second is a common general-purpose target. Riot labels 60 FPS as VALORANT’s recommended tier. Activision specifies Black Ops 6’s recommended hardware for 60 FPS in most situations at high settings. Those are separate publisher targets; do not transfer one game’s parts to the other.
High-refresh competitive play
At 120 Hz, 144 Hz or higher, the PC must deliver substantially more frames and maintain them during busy scenes. Riot’s 144-FPS VALORANT tier and Activision’s competitive specification are examples of explicitly higher targets. The monitor’s refresh rate, the game’s settings and the consistency of frame delivery all matter; a minimum specification cannot validate this goal.
4K or Ultra settings
Higher resolution increases the graphics workload. Activision separates competitive/high-FPS and 4K Ultra requirements from its 60-FPS recommended tier, with a stronger CPU, GPU and 16 GB of RAM. Treat 4K as its own requirement rather than assuming a PC that handles 1080p will deliver the same experience at 4K.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PC or console: a title-specific choice
A console can be the simpler option when the chosen game supports the console you already have. Black Ops 6 is documented for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, in addition to Windows. A PC offers adjustable settings, upgrade paths and access to PC-only releases, but it also requires checking drivers, storage, operating-system features and component compatibility. Console and PC performance should not be treated as directly equivalent without title-specific evidence.

Do not assume that cloud streaming or a virtual machine solves a hardware mismatch. Riot explicitly excludes both for VALORANT. Availability and support differ by game, so consult the title’s own platform and support pages.
If you decide to buy a PC
- Write down the game and target. For example: “Black Ops 6, 60 FPS at high settings,” not simply “modern FPS.”
- Copy the current official tier. Include CPU, GPU, video memory, RAM, storage, operating system and API requirements.
- Check the exact prebuilt or custom parts. Reject listings that omit the GPU model, use vague “gaming graphics” language or provide a laptop GPU without its full model.
- Leave practical headroom. Updates can change storage needs, and a system that barely meets minimum requirements leaves little flexibility for settings or future patches. This is a planning consideration, not a promise of future performance.
- Verify platform ownership. If a supported console already meets your needs, compare its total cost and convenience with the PC purchase.
A desktop with a dedicated graphics card is the relevant category when a game’s recommended or high-refresh tier calls for one. No single component list is appropriate for every shooter; the right purchase depends on the title, target, budget and parts you can verify.
Common failure modes and fixes
The game will not launch
Recheck the operating-system edition, 64-bit requirement, DirectX level and any security features such as TPM 2.0 or UEFI Secure Boot. VALORANT, for example, lists all of these conditions for supported Windows configurations.
The laptop appears to meet the requirement but is unsupported
Confirm the exact mobile GPU model and its video memory. Activision warns that laptop graphics cards that look equivalent to desktop models may be different and may not be supported.

Publishers can require additional storage beyond the launch figure. Black Ops 6 lists 102 GB at launch and extra space for Warzone; keep free capacity beyond the stated baseline.
The PC runs the game but not at the desired frame rate
Check which tier your hardware actually matches. A minimum tier does not certify 60 FPS, high-refresh play or 4K. Lowering resolution or visual settings may reduce load, but the resulting frame rate still depends on the specific system and game update.
A proposed cloud or virtual-machine solution fails
Check the publisher’s support policy before relying on such a setup. Riot states that VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines.
