For previews inside Netflix, you will generally need access to a Netflix membership. Netflix describes those clips as part of browsing its service for members, though its help pages do not state a universal rule that every trailer requires a subscription. Public trailers hosted elsewhere follow that platform’s access rules, so you may be able to watch them without signing in to Netflix.
Netflix previews and public trailers are different
“Netflix trailers” can mean clips that play while you browse the Netflix app, or conventional trailers published publicly on the web. Netflix’s service is subscription-based, and its product descriptions place in-app previews within the member browsing experience. That supports the practical conclusion that membership access is needed for Netflix’s own previews; it does not establish a rule for every title, device, region, or trailer link. Netflix describes its service as subscription-based.

Netflix has also distinguished its browsing previews from traditional trailers. In a 2016 announcement about the TV experience, Netflix said “video previews aren’t teasers or traditional trailers.” That was historical product wording, not a guarantee about how every current preview works. Netflix’s 2016 announcement explains that distinction.
If you find a trailer on a public video platform or another website, Netflix membership is not automatically required to view it. Access depends on the host platform and the particular video.

Can you turn off Netflix preview autoplay?
Yes. Netflix provides an Autoplay Previews preference in profile settings. It controls whether previews start automatically while you browse; changing it does not establish that every title has a manually selectable trailer or that trailer availability is identical across devices.
- Open Netflix in a browser or the Netflix mobile app.
- Go to Manage Profiles and select the profile you want to change.
- Turn Autoplay Previews on or off, then save if prompted.
Netflix says preview autoplay is not supported on iPads and some older TVs and TV streaming devices. Check Netflix’s current instructions for managing preview autoplay for the applicable device steps.

Do you need a more expensive Netflix plan for previews?
The cited Netflix plan and preview-setting pages do not say that a higher-priced tier is required to see previews. The plan differences Netflix lists concern ads and title availability, simultaneous devices, picture quality, downloads, extra members, and—in Premium—spatial audio. The US plan page does not identify a separate preview tier.
The following are the prices and features shown on Netflix’s English-language US-dollar plan page on October 7, 2026. Prices are monthly; taxes may apply. They are not a price guide for other countries, and plan prices or extra-member eligibility may differ by location or when Netflix is supplied through a package or add-on. Netflix says its Basic plan has been discontinued. Check Netflix’s plan page for your location and billing arrangement.

Is there a free Netflix trial just to watch previews?
No. Netflix says it does not offer free trials. It says members can change their plan or cancel online at any time. See Netflix’s free-trial information for its current policy.

How long are Netflix previews?
Netflix’s April 19, 2018 global announcement said its mobile previews were about 30 seconds long. That is a dated description of the mobile format at that time, not a current universal length for every preview or device. Netflix’s mobile previews announcement provides the original context.
