The badge applies game by game, not to the JRPG genre as a whole, so check each must-play title before buying. Verified means a game works well out of the box by Valve’s criteria; it does not promise a particular frame rate, graphics quality, or battery runtime.
What Steam Deck Verified means for JRPGs
Steam Deck is a handheld gaming PC that gives you access to your Steam library. Valve lets you filter that library by compatibility, with four possible labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The official Steam Deck compatibility criteria describe Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.”
That is a useful setup and usability signal, not a genre-wide guarantee. A Verified badge is assigned to an individual title. Check the Steam store page or your library for each game you consider essential, and recheck near the time you plan to buy or play: Valve’s review program continues as games and updates arrive.
How the four ratings differ
- Verified: Works well on Deck out of the box under Valve’s compatibility criteria.
- Playable: Works, but may need manual adjustments—for example, choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher.
- Unsupported: Currently does not function on Steam Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not checked the title yet; this is not the same as a confirmed incompatibility.
What Valve checks—and what it does not promise
Valve’s Verified review covers four areas. Input checks controller support, suitable input icons, and whether the on-screen keyboard appears automatically when needed. Display considers the Deck’s default resolutions—1280×800 or 1280×720—appropriate default settings, and text legibility. Seamlessness checks for compatibility warnings and whether a launcher can be navigated with a controller. System Support includes Proton and middleware such as anti-cheat support.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Those checks do not establish a specific frame rate, graphics preset, or amount of play time per charge. A Verified game can still differ from another Verified game in performance and visual quality; the badge alone does not tell you what those will be.
Which JRPGs are Steam Deck Verified?
Steam has recognizable JRPGs in its catalog, but listings and compatibility ratings can change. Treat each game’s current Steam page as the place to confirm its status rather than assuming that all JRPGs work equally well.

| Game | What its Steam listing establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH | Steam describes it as a JRPG and displays Steam Deck Compatibility: Verified. The listing gives a release date of January 23, 2025, names Square Enix as developer and publisher, and lists 155 GB of required storage. | Confirm the live compatibility badge and current storage requirements on the Steam listing before purchase. |
| Persona 3 Reload | Steam lists JRPG among its popular tags. Its listing gives a release date of February 1, 2024, names ATLUS as developer and SEGA as publisher. It appeared in Steam’s Verified catalog when checked for this article. | Confirm its individual, current Deck compatibility status on the Steam listing or in the Verified catalog. |
These examples show that the Deck can be relevant for JRPG players; they do not show that every JRPG is compatible or performs the same way. Also confirm that the game you want is actually available in your Steam library: a Deck compatibility rating says nothing about titles you own on another platform.
Is Steam Deck Verified enough to decide?
Use the badge as a starting point, then match it to your tolerance for setup and your priorities on a handheld screen. A rating can tell you how the game meets Valve’s compatibility checks, but your must-play list and comfort with adjustments should decide whether the purchase makes sense.
Rank #3
- Verified and you want low setup friction: This is the clearest fit. The rating indicates the game works well out of the box under Valve’s criteria.
- Playable and you do not mind adjustments: It may still suit you if you are comfortable changing controls or navigating a launcher with touch input.
- Text size or controls matter most: Pay attention to Valve’s display and input criteria, and check the game’s current listing. Verified covers defined checks, but it is not a personal guarantee that every interface will feel comfortable to you.
- You want games beyond JRPGs: Check each title separately. The same per-game rating system applies to other Steam games, and your library can be filtered by compatibility.
Does the LCD or OLED Steam Deck change compatibility?
Valve says tested compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. So a Verified rating by itself does not distinguish between those models. Choose between them based on the model features that matter to you, rather than expecting a different compatibility badge for the same tested game.
How to check your games before buying
- Make a list of must-play titles. Include the specific JRPGs and other games that would justify the purchase for you.
- Open each title’s Steam store page or check your Steam library. Find its Steam Deck Compatibility label; do not infer status from its genre or from another game in the series.
- Read the category as a setup expectation. Verified means it meets Valve’s out-of-the-box criteria; Playable may involve manual adjustments; Unsupported is currently nonfunctional; Unknown means it has not been checked.
- Recheck close to purchase and play time. Valve’s ratings and Steam listings are live and can change as compatibility reviews and game updates continue.
Verdict: who should buy a Steam Deck for JRPGs?
The Steam Deck is worth considering if your priority JRPGs are currently Verified, you want a handheld PC with access to your Steam library, and Valve’s compatibility checks match your expectations. Be more cautious if your essential games are only Playable, Unknown, or Unsupported, or if a specific performance target is central to your decision: the Verified badge does not answer that question.
