Sometimes—but there is no subscription rule that applies to every MMORPG. Some let you start and keep playing for free, though free accounts may have restrictions or paid expansions. Others offer only a limited trial before requiring a recurring subscription. A premium membership can also be optional, adding benefits without being necessary to play the base game.
Before paying, check the current terms for the specific game, platform, account type, and edition. A “Complete Edition” or “Premium” label does not by itself mean that future play time is included indefinitely.
What “free,” “subscription,” and “premium” mean
These labels describe different payment arrangements. To work out what you will owe, separate the cost to start from the cost of continuing and the cost of accessing extra content.
- Free-to-play: You can start without paying. Continued access may also be free, but account features or content can be restricted, and expansions may cost extra.
- Buy-to-play: You buy the game or an edition to access it. That purchase does not automatically establish whether a recurring fee is also required.
- Subscription required: A recurring payment is needed to continue playing the applicable version after any included trial or game time ends.
- Optional premium membership: A recurring membership adds benefits, but is not necessarily required for base-game access. Check whether membership benefits end when the membership expires.
An expansion or downloadable content (DLC) pack is another separate question: it may add areas or features without being required to play the base game.

How the rules differ in specific MMORPGs
Official publisher and support pages illustrate why the answer has to be checked game by game. These examples describe the policies stated on those pages; terms, editions, and platform requirements can change.
| Game | Starting and continued access | Extra content or membership |
|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars 2 | Its support page says players can play the core game for free and continue without spending more. It also describes a one-time expansion purchase as an option, not a recurring fee. Guild Wars 2 support | Free accounts have restrictions compared with upgraded accounts; check the separate free-account feature list for the limitations that matter to you. |
| World of Warcraft | Blizzard says an active subscription is required for most modes, with a limited Free Trial as an exception. The trial is not equivalent to unrestricted access to the modern game. Blizzard’s modes and versions guidance | Check the rules for the particular mode you plan to play; the exception and its limits are game-specific. |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Square Enix says Starter Edition and Complete Edition purchases include 30 days of free play time; a subscription is required to continue afterward. Final Fantasy XIV product information | The product information also lists a platform-specific Xbox Game Pass plan requirement. Check current requirements for your platform and region before buying. |
| The Elder Scrolls Online | Its support guidance says DLC game packs are not required to access the full version of the base game. ESO support on DLC access | ESO Plus is described as an optional membership with benefits that include access to Crown Store DLC game packs while membership lasts. ESO Plus benefits |
How to check what you will actually have to pay
- Identify the exact game and platform. Look up the publisher’s current product or support page for the version you intend to play. Platform and account requirements can differ.
- Check what is required to start. Find out whether you need to create a free account, buy the base game or an edition, or meet another platform-specific requirement.
- Find out what the trial includes and when it ends. A trial may cover only limited content or time. Confirm whether it converts to a paid subscription or simply stops allowing access when it expires.
- Confirm the cost of continuing. Look for an explicit statement about whether an active subscription is required after any included play time. Do not assume the edition purchase covers recurring access.
- Separate base-game access from expansions and DLC. Check whether add-on content is optional or required for the areas, story, or features you want.
- Assess any premium membership separately. Determine whether it is optional, which benefits depend on it, and what happens to those benefits when it expires.
- Review account restrictions and current terms before checkout. Free-account features, regional terms, and platform rules can change; use the publisher’s latest information for your account and location.
Does buying a premium or complete edition cover future play time?
Not necessarily. Edition names describe a package, but they are not a reliable substitute for the publisher’s explicit play-time terms. For example, Square Enix says Starter and Complete Edition purchases for Final Fantasy XIV include 30 days of free play time, followed by a required subscription. For any other game, confirm exactly what the edition includes and whether a recurring fee applies afterward.
