No—you can start with Sonic Adventure 2. Playing Sonic Adventure first is optional context, not a stated prerequisite. Choose it if you prefer release order or want to experience the earlier game’s characters and setting.

Is Sonic Adventure required to understand Sonic Adventure 2?

SEGA’s official description of Sonic Adventure 2 lays out its own two-sided story: the Hero side follows Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, while the Dark side features Dr. Eggman, Shadow and Rouge. Their campaigns converge into a larger story. SEGA does not say that players must finish the first game before starting this one. SEGA’s Sonic Adventure 2 page therefore supports a practical answer: you can begin with 2.

That is not a promise that the sequel contains no callbacks or that every reference will be self-contained. SEGA’s description does not settle those questions. If your goal is simply to follow the sequel’s central campaigns, there is no stated completion requirement for the first game.

Which order should you choose?

Order Choose it if… What you get
Release order: Sonic Adventure, then Sonic Adventure 2 You want the earlier setting and series context first. The first game has its own six-character story, with distinct character perspectives and abilities. SEGA’s Sonic Adventure page describes its Adventure Fields and action stages.
Sequel first: Sonic Adventure 2, then Sonic Adventure if you want more You are mainly interested in the sequel and want to play it now. You can start with the Hero and Dark campaigns without a stated requirement to complete the earlier game.

Neither order is identified by SEGA as mandatory. The first game came before the sequel in release history, so release order is a sensible preference—not a condition for playing 2.

What are the games and editions called?

SEGA’s platform listings distinguish several releases. Sonic Adventure is listed for Dreamcast; Sonic Adventure DX is listed for GameCube, Windows PC, Steam, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. For the sequel, SEGA lists Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Steam, and describes Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as the GameCube release. These are publisher-listed platforms, not a guarantee that every edition is currently sold in every region. See SEGA’s Sonic Adventure page, SEGA’s Sonic Adventure 2 page and SEGA’s regional Steam distribution notice.

That notice says Japanese distribution of the Steam versions of Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2 opened on January 23, 2024. It refers specifically to Japan; availability elsewhere can differ by region and date.
