Yes for internet multiplayer; no for supported local wireless play. On Switch 2, Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership when you connect to players over the internet. If everyone is nearby, the supported local-wireless modes do not require that subscription. The precise options still depend on the game, so Pokémon titles should not be treated as having one universal rule.
The short answer
| How you connect | Is Nintendo Switch Online required? | What else is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Internet play with distant friends | Yes for the cited Scarlet/Violet and Legends: Z-A features | Internet access, the compatible game, current updates, and any account requirement listed by that game |
| Internet matchmaking or other online features | Yes for the cited features | Internet access and the game’s online setup |
| Local wireless with nearby players | No subscription is identified for this mode | Multiple compatible consoles and game software as applicable, with matching current updates |
| Single-system play | Title-specific | Check the game’s player-mode listing; Legends: Z-A lists single-system play for one player |
Nintendo’s Scarlet/Violet support instructions list an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection before online setup. The Pokémon Company’s announcement for Legends: Z-A likewise says a paid membership is required for battles via the internet. Those requirements do not apply to the local-wireless paths described for nearby players.

Why the connection type determines the requirement
Nintendo separates communication into two fundamentally different routes. Internet communication connects consoles through Nintendo’s online service, so the cited games require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for those features. Local communication connects nearby consoles directly over local wireless. Nintendo’s support wording describes local communication as the choice when the players are nearby, such as in the same room, and internet communication as the choice for players farther away.
That means the same activity can have different requirements. Trading, battling, exploring together, or entering a Tera Raid does not automatically require a subscription; the answer changes according to whether you select local wireless or an internet connection. A friend in the next room can use the local route, while a friend in another city requires the online route and its membership requirement.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet on Switch 2
Internet multiplayer
Nintendo’s support material applies to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Before using internet communication in Scarlet or Violet, Nintendo lists three prerequisites: a Switch 2 or Switch console, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and an internet connection. Players then select internet communication rather than local communication in the game’s multiplayer process.
Internet communication is the appropriate choice for friends who are not physically nearby. It is also the route for online activities that pair you with players through an internet service. Each participant must have the compatible game software and current updates; an outdated copy can prevent players from joining the same session even when the membership and connection are valid.
What Scarlet and Violet support together
Nintendo states that two to four players with a copy of Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet can explore, battle, trade, and challenge Tera Raid Battles together. Those activities are available either online or through local wireless, so the subscription question is determined by the connection method rather than by the activity itself.

Local wireless
For nearby players, choose local communication. No Nintendo Switch Online membership is identified for this mode. The practical setup is a group of compatible consoles within local range, each running the relevant Scarlet or Violet software with current, matching updates. The game’s player limit for the cited group activities is two to four.
Local wireless is therefore the way to trade or battle without paying for Nintendo’s online service, provided everyone is physically together and the title’s local mode is available for the activity you want. It is not the same as using a home Wi-Fi connection to reach a distant friend: a normal internet connection still counts as internet communication and follows the paid-membership rule.

| Mode | Players listed | Subscription condition |
|---|---|---|
| Single-system | 1 | No multiplayer connection is involved |
| Local wireless | 2–4 | Nintendo Switch Online is not identified as required for this local mode |
| Online | 2–4 | Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account are required for online features |
The same listing says the Nintendo Switch Online membership is sold separately and that a Nintendo Account is required for online features. The Pokémon Company’s announcement adds that Link Battles can connect nearby players locally or distant players online, with a paid membership required for battles over the internet.

Playing locally without Nintendo Switch Online
If the players are together, use Legends: Z-A’s local-wireless option for the supported two-to-four-player activities. Each player needs the compatible software and a current update, and the consoles must be able to communicate locally. Because this is not an internet feature, the cited requirement for a paid membership does not apply.
Battling from different locations
For a Link Battle with someone who is not nearby, use the online option. The online listing requires Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account, and the game connects two to four players through the internet. A local Wi-Fi network in one house is not a substitute for the online route when the other player is elsewhere; the determining factor is whether the consoles are using local wireless or internet communication.

What every participant should check first
- Correct game: Everyone must have compatible Pokémon software for the activity. Scarlet and Violet players need a copy of the relevant game; Legends: Z-A players need the compatible edition.
- Current software: Nintendo’s support material calls for current game software. Local players in particular need matching updates so their versions can communicate.
- Connection choice: Decide whether the group is using local wireless or the internet before troubleshooting a subscription problem.
- Internet prerequisites: Online play needs an internet connection, and Nintendo lists an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the cited Scarlet/Violet setup.
- Account requirement: Legends: Z-A’s online features require a Nintendo Account in addition to the membership.
- Compatible hardware: The Scarlet/Violet support instructions cover Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Check the particular game’s listing if a different Pokémon title or edition is involved.
How to choose the right setup
Use local wireless when everyone is nearby
- Put the players in the same physical location and make sure each console is within local wireless range.
- Update each game to the current compatible version before trying to connect.
- Open the game’s multiplayer or communication feature and select Local communication, the wording Nintendo uses for nearby players.
- Choose the activity supported by the title, such as trading, battling, co-op exploration, a Tera Raid in Scarlet/Violet, or a local Link Battle in Legends: Z-A.
- If the group cannot see one another, verify that every player is using the same compatible software and that the activity supports the listed player count.
Use internet communication for distant players
- Confirm that the game supports the online activity you want and that every participant has the compatible, updated software.
- Connect each console to the internet.
- Ensure the online account being used meets the game’s stated requirements. For the cited Scarlet/Violet features, Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; Legends: Z-A also specifies a Nintendo Account.
- Open the game’s communication feature and choose Internet communication rather than local communication.
- Use the game’s online joining, lobby, or battle process to invite or find the other players.
If a player has no active membership, switching from internet to local communication only solves the problem when everyone can actually meet nearby and the title offers local support for that activity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
The game says a membership is required
Check whether the group accidentally selected internet communication. A nearby group can avoid the subscription requirement by returning to the communication choice and selecting local communication, assuming the game and activity support it. If the players are in different locations, the warning is expected for the cited online features.
Local players cannot find one another
Start with software versions. Nintendo’s material requires current software, and local players need matching updates. Confirm that every console has the compatible game, that the group is within local wireless range, and that the chosen activity supports two to four players rather than single-system play.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Online players cannot connect
Verify the internet connection, the active Nintendo Switch Online membership required by the game, and any Nintendo Account requirement. For Legends: Z-A, the product listing explicitly requires both the membership and a Nintendo Account for online features. Also check that every participant is using the correct edition and current update.
A different Pokémon game behaves differently
Do not infer a rule from Scarlet/Violet or Legends: Z-A. Pokémon UNITE has its own official membership FAQ, and future releases may set different conditions. Look for the particular title’s current Nintendo or Pokémon support information and read its player-mode listing before buying a subscription solely for that game.
What about Pokémon UNITE and other Pokémon games?
The evidence for this answer is game-specific. Pokémon UNITE is covered by a separate official support article that directly addresses whether paid Nintendo Switch Online is required. That separate treatment is a reminder that free-to-play games and later Pokémon releases may not follow the same model as the cited role-playing games.
For any title not named above, check three things in its current official information: whether the desired feature is online or local wireless, whether the player-mode listing names Nintendo Switch Online, and whether a Nintendo Account or other account is required. A game’s being on Switch 2 does not, by itself, establish the subscription rule.
Bottom line for Switch 2 Pokémon multiplayer
For Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A, plan on Nintendo Switch Online when friends are connecting over the internet. You can use the supported local-wireless modes without that subscription when the players are together. Keep the game software updated, use compatible copies, select the communication type that matches your situation, and verify the individual title’s rules before applying this answer to another Pokémon release.
