Yes. To play games in Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The standard membership includes the NES library; you do not need the pricier Expansion Pack. Nintendo’s membership overview describes the included classic-game libraries, and its support FAQ explains the access rules.
Which membership includes NES games?
The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership is enough for Nintendo’s NES Classics library. It also includes Super NES and Game Boy classics. The Expansion Pack adds other classic-game libraries and benefits, but it is not required for NES games.

How to get the NES Classics library
- On your Switch or Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account with an active membership.
- Go to Nintendo Switch Online and select Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics.
- Select Free Download. The app can be downloaded, but playing its library still requires an eligible active membership.
Nintendo’s NES Classics product page provides the library download. An account without a membership cannot use the library just because another account on the same console subscribes; Nintendo checks access for each account.
What happens if your membership expires?
The NES Classics games become inaccessible when the membership lapses. Your game save data remains on the console, and you can use it again if you renew. Downloading the app does not turn the games into permanent purchases. Nintendo’s classic-games FAQ covers expired memberships and saved data.

Can you play NES classics offline?
Yes, but offline access is not indefinite: Nintendo requires the console to connect to the internet at least once every seven days so it can verify the active membership. You will need an internet connection for that periodic check.
Is an NES controller required?
No. Nintendo’s wireless NES controller 2-pack is an optional accessory for members, not a requirement for playing the library. Buying the controllers does not replace the membership needed for access. See Nintendo’s NES controller product page for its product details.

Are all classic NES games subscription-only?
No. The membership requirement applies to Nintendo’s NES Classics service, not every NES game available in every format. Nintendo notes that older games may also be offered through other routes, such as eShop releases or packaged collections. Availability depends on the specific game and product.
