The short answer: an active membership is required
Nintendo’s support article, updated June 2, 2026, states: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use Nintendo Music.” That wording answers both common versions of the question: you cannot use Nintendo Music without Switch Online, and downloading the app alone does not create a free, independent music account.
The membership requirement is about having an active subscription, not merely having owned a Nintendo Switch, having a Nintendo Account, or having installed the application. Nintendo Music is delivered as a benefit for Nintendo Switch Online members. The music app does not have its own separate Nintendo Music subscription charge, according to Nintendo’s membership information and its launch announcement.

In practical terms, there are two costs to distinguish:
- Nintendo Music access: no additional charge for a member once the app’s other requirements are met.
- Nintendo Switch Online: sold separately under Nintendo’s membership plans. The amount depends on the plan and the country, so a current local price should be checked before subscribing.
Nintendo’s official material does not establish a universal price that applies to every reader. Avoid treating Nintendo Music as “free” in the sense of requiring no paid membership; it is included with an eligible, active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
What you need before opening Nintendo Music
Nintendo identifies several conditions for using the service. They are separate checks: satisfying one does not replace the others.

1. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership
This is the decisive requirement. The membership must be active when you use Nintendo Music. If it is not active, Nintendo’s stated requirement is not met, regardless of whether the application remains installed on your phone or tablet.
2. A Nintendo Account
The app uses a Nintendo Account to associate the user with Nintendo’s services and membership status. You therefore need an account that can be used to sign in and that is connected to the Nintendo Switch Online membership you intend to use.
Having an account by itself is not enough. A Nintendo Account without an active Switch Online membership does not satisfy Nintendo’s requirement for Nintendo Music.

3. A compatible smart device
Nintendo describes Nintendo Music as a smart-device app. The official requirement is a compatible smart device; Nintendo’s published requirement does not say that a Nintendo Switch console can substitute for that device.

4. Internet access
You need internet access for the service’s online functions, including obtaining the app, signing in and streaming music. Nintendo lists internet access among the conditions for using Nintendo Music. A device that is permanently offline cannot complete those online steps.
5. A supported country or region
Nintendo Music is not automatically available worldwide. Nintendo maintains a country list and notes that additional regions may be added. Availability is therefore a location question as well as an account question: a valid membership in an unsupported country does not by itself guarantee access.
Check Nintendo’s current Nintendo Music support page for your country before troubleshooting an account or device. The regional list can change, so an answer based on an older launch list may be out of date.
Is Nintendo Music included with Switch Online?
Yes. Nintendo describes Nintendo Music as available to Nintendo Switch Online members at no additional cost. That means Nintendo does not bill a second, app-specific music subscription on top of the membership.

The distinction matters when comparing Nintendo Music with a conventional music service. You do not sign up for a separate Nintendo Music plan, but you do need to maintain the underlying Nintendo Switch Online membership. A person who has never subscribed must first obtain a membership in a plan offered for their country; the app’s included status does not remove that prerequisite.
Because plans, currencies and promotions vary by market and can change, this article does not quote a single Nintendo Switch Online price. Use Nintendo’s membership information for the country where the account is registered and verify the current terms before paying.
Do you need to own a Nintendo Switch console?
Nintendo’s stated app requirements are a Nintendo Switch Online membership, Nintendo Account, compatible smart device and internet access in a supported region. Ownership of a Switch console is not listed as a separate requirement for Nintendo Music.

That does not change the membership rule. A person may be able to use the app on a compatible smart device without treating the console itself as the playback device, but the account still needs the required active membership. Conversely, owning a Switch console without that membership does not unlock Nintendo Music.
The safest way to think about the relationship is:
- Console ownership: not identified by Nintendo as a separate prerequisite for the app.
- Smart-device ownership: required because Nintendo Music is a smart-device application.
- Membership status: required even when the user has a console and a Nintendo Account.
How access works from installation to listening
Nintendo does not publish one universal setup sequence for every phone, operating system or region. The following order follows the requirements Nintendo does state and helps isolate the common decision points.
- Confirm regional availability. Check Nintendo’s current Nintendo Music country list for the country associated with your account and service access.
- Verify membership status. Make sure the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. If you have never subscribed, select a currently offered membership plan for your country.
- Prepare your Nintendo Account. Use the account associated with the membership. An unrelated account can appear to have no entitlement even when another account in the household has one.
- Use a compatible smart device. Install Nintendo Music only on a device that meets Nintendo’s current compatibility requirements.
- Connect to the internet and sign in. Internet access is needed for the online setup and account check. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that holds the membership.
- Choose a listening mode. Nintendo’s October 31, 2024 launch announcement says members can stream songs in the app or download them to the app for offline listening.
If the process stops at a particular step, troubleshoot that condition rather than buying another Nintendo product. For example, a membership error points to account or subscription status, while a regional message points to availability rather than a missing console.

Streaming versus downloaded offline listening
Nintendo Music supports two listening patterns described in Nintendo’s launch announcement.
Streaming
Streaming plays songs through the app while the device is connected to the internet. It is the straightforward option when you have a reliable connection and do not need to prepare music in advance.
Downloads for offline listening
Nintendo says songs can be downloaded to the app for offline listening. This is useful when a connection is unavailable after the downloads have been prepared. Offline playback should not be confused with offline sign-up: you still need internet access for the initial installation, account authentication and obtaining the tracks, and Nintendo still requires the underlying membership for use of the service.
The announcement describes the capability but does not state a universal download limit, retention period or device-transfer policy. Do not assume that downloaded music creates a permanent, membership-free copy or that it will work indefinitely after a membership ends.

What to check when Nintendo Music does not work
The app says a membership is required
Confirm that the signed-in Nintendo Account is the one tied to the active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If the account has no active membership, installing the app again will not resolve the issue; the stated prerequisite is still missing.
The app or store cannot be found
Check your country against Nintendo’s current supported-country list. Nintendo says more regions may be added, so availability can change, but a service that is not offered in your region cannot be made available by changing a device setting.

Sign-in or loading fails
Verify the internet connection and try the account sign-in again. Nintendo lists internet access as a requirement, so an offline or unstable connection can interrupt setup and streaming.
The device will not install or run the app
Check whether the smart device is compatible according to Nintendo’s current requirements. A working Nintendo Account and active membership do not make an unsupported phone or tablet compatible.
Downloaded music will not play offline
First distinguish a downloaded track from a stream: Nintendo’s offline feature applies to music downloaded to the app. If the tracks were never downloaded, an internet connection is needed to stream them. If they were downloaded, review the account and membership status as well as the app’s current requirements; Nintendo’s announcement confirms offline listening but does not promise that downloads remain usable after membership access changes.
How much Nintendo Music costs
Nintendo Music itself has no additional charge for Nintendo Switch Online members. The relevant purchase is the Nintendo Switch Online membership, whose price and plan options depend on country and current Nintendo terms.
Do not add a second music subscription to your budget, and do not treat a Nintendo Switch console, headphones or an eShop purchase as a stated requirement. Nintendo’s published conditions center on membership, account, compatible smart device, internet access and regional availability.
What the service contains
Nintendo’s October 31, 2024 Canadian launch announcement presented Nintendo Music as a catalog spanning nearly 40 years of Nintendo history. That description explains the app’s purpose, but it does not alter the access rule: the historical catalog is available through the membership benefit, not through a separate free tier.
The same announcement established the two listening choices that matter most to users: stream songs in the app or download them for offline listening. Which music is available and how the catalog is organized are service details; the prerequisites remain the ones Nintendo lists for the app.
