If you own an eligible PS4 game, Sony’s standard PS5 upgrade process does not list PlayStation Plus as a requirement. You sign in with the account that owns the game, open the PS5 game hub, choose the upgrade offer, and download the PS5 version or buy the upgrade if it is not free.
That answer changes when the game comes from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, was only redeemed as a Plus benefit, or requires online multiplayer. The game’s own hub and PlayStation Store listing determine the final terms.

What “PS5 remaster upgrade” means
A PS5 remaster or upgrade is a PS5 version made available to someone who already has a qualifying PS4 game. The entitlement may be free, paid, or discounted, depending on the title. It is separate from downloading a game supplied through a subscription catalog.

Sony describes the general arrangement this way: “Certain PlayStation®4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation®5 version of the game on a PS5® console.” The word certain matters. Upgrade eligibility is set title by title, so owning any PS4 game does not automatically guarantee a PS5 version.

When PlayStation Plus is not needed
For an ordinary upgrade, the important entitlement is ownership of an eligible PS4 copy. That can be a purchased digital license or a qualifying disc license. PlayStation Plus is not a general download requirement for the upgrade itself, and an active membership is not what authorizes offline play of a PS5 version you own.
You still need an internet connection to obtain the upgrade. The connection is used to verify the entitlement and download the PS5 software; it is not the same thing as a Plus subscription. After installation, whether you can play without Plus depends mainly on the game’s ownership model and whether you are trying to use online multiplayer.
How to claim a normal PS5 upgrade
Use this sequence when the PS4 game was purchased rather than obtained solely through a Plus benefit:

- Confirm the entitlement. Make sure the PS4 game is owned by the PlayStation account you will use on the PS5 and that the title offers a PS5 version.
- Sign in on the PS5. Use the same PlayStation account associated with the digital purchase or the disc entitlement.
- Open the game hub. Find the title on the PS5 home screen or in your Game Library, then open its product or game hub.
- Review the upgrade offer. The hub should identify whether the PS5 version is free, paid, or discounted. Sony’s terms vary by game, so do not assume that every offer is free.
- Select the displayed action. Choose Download for a no-cost entitlement, or complete the purchase if the upgrade has a charge.
- Install and launch the PS5 version. Check that you selected the PS5 edition rather than merely reinstalling the PS4 edition.
If the offer does not appear, check the account, region and edition shown in the game hub before assuming that Plus is missing. The individual product page is the authoritative place for that game’s current upgrade terms.
Disc owners: the requirement that remains after downloading
A PS4 disc can qualify you for a digital PS5 upgrade, but the disc continues to function as the license check. You must insert the original PS4 disc each time you play the downloaded PS5 version. The disc does not need to remain in the drive while the game is downloading, but it must be present when you start the game.

This also means a PS5 console without a disc drive cannot use a disc-based entitlement in the normal way. A disc owner should not expect the digital PS5 copy to become a permanently independent license merely because the upgrade was downloaded.
Digital PS4 owners
With a qualifying digital PS4 purchase, the PS5 checks the PlayStation account’s license rather than a physical disc. Sign in to that account, open the game hub and select the listed PS5 offer. If the title has separate regional or edition versions, the offer shown for your account is the one that controls your access.

Installing the PS4 game does not itself install the PS5 version, and seeing a PS4 icon in your library is not proof that the upgrade was claimed.
Exception: games downloaded from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
The Game Catalog is a subscription library, not a purchased ownership license. Downloading a catalog game requires the PlayStation Plus plan that includes that catalog access. You can continue using the catalog version only while the membership remains active and the title remains in the catalog.
If a catalog title also has a PS5 version, the catalog rules still matter. Do not treat the catalog download as equivalent to buying the PS4 game. The Store or game hub may present a PS5 option, but the displayed plan requirement and availability period govern that access.

Exception: PS4 games redeemed as a Plus benefit
Sony generally excludes PS4 games that were redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit from PS5 upgrades unless Sony or the publisher specifically says otherwise. This is different from having purchased the game while you happened to be a Plus member.
The distinction is the source of the license:
- A game bought through the PlayStation Store is a purchase entitlement, even if the buyer has Plus.
- A game claimed at no additional charge as a monthly or other Plus benefit is normally a Plus benefit entitlement, and Sony says such games are not eligible for an upgrade unless an exception is announced.
- A game downloaded from the Game Catalog is controlled by catalog membership and removal dates rather than permanent ownership.
When the PS5 hub does not offer an upgrade for a claimed game, check how the PS4 copy entered your library before troubleshooting downloads.
Exception: online multiplayer
PlayStation Plus is usually required for online multiplayer in paid PS4 and PS5 games. That requirement concerns the network mode, not the basic ability to install or play an owned remaster offline. Some games are exempt from the multiplayer requirement, so the game’s PlayStation Store listing is the place to verify the rule for a specific title.
A useful way to separate the questions is:
- Can I download the upgrade? Check ownership and the upgrade offer.
- Can I play the installed game offline? Check the license and any title-specific requirements.
- Can I play with or against other people online? Check the game’s multiplayer requirement; Plus is commonly needed for paid games.
Upgrade pricing is separate from Plus pricing
Some upgrades cost nothing, while others require a purchase or offer a reduced price to eligible PS4 owners. A Plus subscription does not automatically make a paid upgrade free. Conversely, seeing a price does not mean that Plus is required; it may simply be the game’s upgrade fee.
Read the exact wording in the game hub before paying. Look for the edition name, the PS5 version, and whether the amount is described as an upgrade price or the full game price. Sony’s general upgrade guidance says that terms vary by game, so a policy from one remaster cannot be applied to another.

What to do when the upgrade is missing
Check the account first
Sign out of accounts that do not own the game and sign in with the purchasing account. A PS5 can display a game installed by another user while the active account lacks the upgrade entitlement.
Check whether the PS4 copy was purchased, claimed or catalog-based
Review your transaction history and library source. A purchased copy, a Plus-redeemed copy and a catalog download can show similar game icons while carrying different rights.
Check the edition and region shown in the hub
Open the product details and verify that the offer applies to your edition. Deluxe, standard, bundled and regional versions can have different upgrade terms.
Check the download target
Use the edition selector or game hub to choose the PS5 version. If only the PS4 version is installed, remove the assumption that the upgrade failed; the PS5 download may simply not have been selected.

Keep the disc in the PS5 drive when launching the digital PS5 version. Without that check, the console cannot validate the disc-based entitlement.

Common real-world scenarios
“I bought the PS4 game and have no Plus subscription.”
If the title offers a PS5 upgrade, follow the game-hub steps. Plus is not the general prerequisite for that download. An internet connection and the correct purchasing account are still required.
“I claimed the PS4 game when it was offered through Plus.”
Expect the upgrade to be unavailable unless Sony or the publisher explicitly includes that benefit entitlement. Having once claimed the game does not turn it into a purchased PS4 license.
“I downloaded the game from the Game Catalog.”
Your access depends on the qualifying Plus plan and the game remaining in the catalog. If the membership ends or the title leaves the catalog, catalog access ends under those terms.

“The PS5 version installs, but multiplayer is locked.”
That is a multiplayer-access question rather than an upgrade-download question. Check the title’s Store listing for its Plus requirement and any stated exemption.
“I own the disc, but the PS5 says I do not own the game.”
Insert the PS4 disc before launching the PS5 digital version. The disc is the continuing license check for that upgrade path.
The practical rule
Start with the source of your PS4 entitlement, not with your Plus status. A purchased eligible PS4 game can normally be upgraded without Plus; a catalog game follows catalog membership; a Plus-redeemed PS4 benefit is generally excluded; and online multiplayer has its own subscription rule. Because Sony allows game-specific terms, always use the upgrade offer displayed in that title’s PS5 hub as the final authority.
