Yes—if you’re playing MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls online on PS5, you need a PlayStation Plus account and an internet connection. The requirement covers Online Lobby, Room Matches (Private Rooms), Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, Player Profile, and other online features. The official game FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, says offline PS5 content can be accessed without PlayStation Plus. PC follows a different account rule: the FAQ specifies a PlayStation Account and an internet connection for online features, not a PlayStation Plus subscription.
The short version is platform-specific: PS5 online play calls for PS Plus; listed offline content does not. PC online play calls for a PlayStation Account and internet access, but the FAQ does not state a PS Plus requirement for PC. The distinction matters if you have seen older beta coverage, are deciding between PC and PS5, or are choosing between a digital copy and a disc.

What requires PlayStation Plus on PS5?
According to the official MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls FAQ, PS5 online features require both a PlayStation Plus account and an internet connection. The FAQ specifically names Online Lobby, Room Matches (Private Rooms), Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, Player Profile, and “other online features.” That last phrase makes the listed modes examples rather than an exhaustive catalog.

Buying the game—whether digitally or on disc—does not fulfill that separate online requirement. The FAQ does not specify a PlayStation Plus plan tier, so check PlayStation’s current subscription terms if you need to know which tier applies to your account.

This is not a rule limited to competitive matchmaking. Ranked Matches are explicitly named, but so are Casual Matches, private Room Matches, and the Online Lobby. The Player Profile is also included in the FAQ’s online-feature list. In other words, do not assume that a mode avoids the requirement because it is private, casual, or not a ranked match. The official wording covers the named features and other online features generally.
Internet access is a separate part of the requirement, not an alternative to PS Plus. An internet connection without the required PS Plus account does not meet the stated PS5 online conditions; likewise, the subscription by itself does not remove the need for internet access. The FAQ does not provide further troubleshooting steps or define what connection quality is needed, so it is best not to infer a speed threshold or other network specification from this requirement alone.
Can you play without PS Plus?
Yes, for the offline modes and content identified in the official FAQ. It names Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides as available offline on PS5 without a PlayStation Plus account. Arcadia Rumble is also described as playable offline, with online features optional.
That means the subscription requirement is not a blanket requirement to launch or play every part of the PS5 game. It applies to online features; the FAQ separately identifies offline content that can be accessed without PlayStation Plus. If you are choosing the game primarily for offline play, the listed content does not require the subscription. If a specific feature is not named above, the FAQ’s reference to “other online features” means you should treat it as potentially covered by the online requirement rather than assume it is available without PS Plus.
The distinction is about how a feature is accessed. Local Versus appears in the list of offline content, while Room Matches (Private Rooms) appears in the online list. The names may sound similar, but the FAQ places them on different sides of the line: local play is listed as offline, and private Room Matches are an online feature requiring PS Plus on PS5. If you want to play with someone in person, the offline listing is the relevant one; if you want to use an online room, the online requirement applies.
Arcadia Rumble deserves a separate note because the FAQ describes it as playable offline while also having optional online features. That does not mean every way of using it is offline or that its online elements are exempt from the general online requirement. The safe interpretation is that the offline portion can be played offline, while online features remain subject to the PS5 online rule. The FAQ does not itemize every Arcadia Rumble function, so check the official mode information if you need an answer about a particular feature.
For a player who does not plan to subscribe, the listed offline modes give a clear starting point: Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, Character Guides, and offline Arcadia Rumble. That list is useful, but it is not a promise that every game function works offline. The FAQ separately uses the broad phrase “other online features,” so any function that depends on online access should not be presumed to work without the required account and connection.

PS5 and PC requirements at a glance
| Platform and use | Requirement stated by the official FAQ |
|---|---|
| PS5 online features | PlayStation Plus account and internet connection |
| PS5 listed offline modes and content | Can be accessed without a PlayStation Plus account |
| PC online features | PlayStation Account and internet connection; the FAQ does not state that PlayStation Plus is required |
| PC offline modes and content | Can be played without a PlayStation Account, according to the FAQ |
The PC rule is distinct from the PS5 rule. For PC online play, the FAQ calls for a PlayStation Account and internet connection, but does not say that a PlayStation Plus subscription is required. Do not carry the PS5 requirement over to PC. For PC offline play, the FAQ says the PC SKU’s offline modes and content can be played without a PlayStation Account.
That difference answers two questions that are easy to blend together: whether you need a PlayStation account of some kind, and whether you need a paid PlayStation Plus subscription. On PS5, the FAQ explicitly specifies a PlayStation Plus account for online features. On PC, it specifies a PlayStation Account and internet access. It does not say that PC players must buy PS Plus, so the PS5 subscription condition should not be treated as a universal rule across both platforms.
The platform also changes the offline account guidance. The FAQ says offline modes and content on PS5 can be accessed without a PlayStation Plus account, while PC offline modes and content can be played without a PlayStation Account. These statements do not mean that the online requirements disappear; they describe offline access. If you are choosing between platforms specifically to avoid a subscription, the relevant comparison is PS5 online versus PC online—not PS5 offline versus PC offline.
Nothing in the stated FAQ rule promises that the same account setup or online process works identically on both platforms. It gives the account and connection requirements, not step-by-step sign-in instructions. Before planning an online session, use the guidance for the platform you will actually play on, and do not add a PS Plus purchase to the PC checklist solely because it is required for PS5 online features.
Why have some players seen that PS Plus is not required?
That statement applied to the open beta, not the released game. In its July 16, 2026 open-beta explainer, PlayStation said, “A PlayStation Plus subscription is not required.” The statement was specific to beta access. The official game FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, gives the released PS5 game’s current rule: PlayStation Plus is required for online features.
So if you saw beta coverage saying no subscription was needed, it does not contradict the released-game requirement. Beta access and online play in the released game are separate cases; use the released-game FAQ when deciding whether you need PS Plus now.
The dates and context help reconcile the two statements. The no-subscription wording appeared in PlayStation.Blog’s open-beta explainer on July 16, 2026. The released-game FAQ was updated on August 18, 2026, and states the PS5 online requirement. A beta’s access terms should not be used as a substitute for the rule that applies to the released PS5 game.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
This also explains why a quick search can produce a misleading answer if the result does not say whether it is discussing the beta or the released game. When comparing statements, check which version or access period they describe. For the released game, follow the FAQ’s current platform-specific guidance: PS Plus plus internet on PS5 for online features; a PlayStation Account plus internet on PC for online features.
Does the game’s edition or format change the requirement?
No format distinction is stated for online access. The US PlayStation Store listing observed October 12, 2026, showed digital PS5 editions, and Target’s listing observed the same day identified a PS5 Blu-ray disc edition. The FAQ’s PS5 online requirement applies to the PS5 SKU, so purchasing a physical disc instead of a digital edition does not remove the need for PlayStation Plus for online features.
The PlayStation Store displayed a US Standard Edition price of $59.99 when observed on October 12, 2026. That is a dated storefront price for the game, not the cost of PlayStation Plus and not evidence that the online subscription is included. Store prices and availability can change.
Keep the purchase and the online service requirement separate when budgeting. The game’s purchase price is for the game edition shown by the store; the PS5 online requirement is a separate account and connectivity condition. A physical disc is still a PS5 copy of the game, and the fact that it comes on Blu-ray does not change the FAQ’s rule for PS5 online features. Likewise, choosing a digital edition does not add a PS Plus subscription by itself.
The listings establish that both digital editions and a physical disc edition were available when observed, but they do not establish that every edition remains available at the same price today. The $59.99 figure is specifically the US Standard Edition price displayed on October 12, 2026. It should not be read as a current universal price, a subscription price, or a bundle that includes PS Plus. Confirm the relevant store listing for current availability and pricing.
How to decide what you need before playing
- Choose your platform. On PS5, online features require PlayStation Plus and an internet connection. On PC, the FAQ specifies a PlayStation Account and internet connection for online features, without stating a PS Plus requirement.
- Identify whether you want online or offline play. For PS5 online modes such as Ranked, Casual, private Room Matches, or Online Lobby, arrange PS Plus access. For the listed offline content, the FAQ says no PlayStation Plus account is needed.
- Check the released-game guidance, not beta guidance. The no-subscription statement was for the open beta; it is not the released PS5 game’s online rule.
- Choose digital or disc based on your preference, not the subscription requirement. Both formats are available in the referenced listings, but the format does not change the stated PS5 online requirement.
Those four checks cover the main decision points without assuming that every player wants the same features. If you only intend to use the modes explicitly identified as offline, the FAQ says a PS Plus account is not needed on PS5. If you want Ranked, Casual, private rooms, the Online Lobby, or other online features, the PS5 requirement applies. If you plan to play on PC, use the separate account rule rather than assuming the PS5 condition carries across.
If you are uncertain about a particular activity, first determine whether it is described as offline or online in the official game information. The listed offline modes are a practical guide, while “other online features” signals that the online list is broader than its named examples. Avoid assuming that a feature is exempt just because it is not one of the named matchmaking modes.

Optional fighting-game controls
PlayStation says any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used with the game. These are optional control choices, not a requirement for playing and not a substitute for PlayStation Plus when using PS5 online features.
That compatibility note is useful if you are weighing additional equipment, but it does not change the subscription answer. You do not need an arcade stick or leverless controller to satisfy the online requirement, and buying one will not unlock online play without the required PS Plus account and internet connection. Treat controllers as a preference for how to play, not a prerequisite for accessing the game’s online features.
