Usually, no. If you own any eligible PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar announced a no-cost upgrade to the PS5 version beginning June 18, 2026. If you do not own GTAV, you can buy the PS5 standalone edition of GTA Online without Story Mode, or buy the full GTAV edition if you also want the single-player campaign. Either way, PS5 multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
The three ways to play GTA Online on PS5
Your best route depends on two things: whether your PlayStation account already owns GTAV on PS4, and whether you want Story Mode. The PS5 versions are sold as separate products, but a PS4 entitlement can remove the need to purchase them again.

If you own GTA V on PS4
Rockstar’s June 17, 2026 Newswire announcement says: “Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost.” For PS5 players, that announced upgrade window began June 18, 2026.

This means an existing PS4 GTAV entitlement is the first thing to check before spending money. The upgrade is tied to the account that owns the game. Sign in to that purchasing account on your PS5, open the PlayStation Store, search for GTAV, and make sure you select the PS5 product rather than adding a new paid edition to your cart.

How to claim the PS5 version
- Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation Network account that owns your PS4 copy or entitlement.
- Open the PlayStation Store and search for Grand Theft Auto V.
- Use the edition or version selector to view the PS5 version. Do not assume the first result is the correct platform.
- Check whether the store shows the PS5 upgrade at no additional cost, then add or download that version.
- Install the PS5 edition and launch it from the PS5 game library.
If the store still shows a price, first verify that you are using the original purchasing account and that the PS4 entitlement appears in that account’s game library. Also check the product generation: a paid PS5 listing may be a different edition from the upgrade path. Store presentation can vary by region and by whether the PS4 copy was obtained digitally or through another distribution method, so use the entitlement shown on your account rather than relying on a search result alone.
What the free upgrade does for your progress
Rockstar says current players can transfer both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 with a one-time migration. The PlayStation listing for the standalone PS5 edition likewise describes one-time migration for GTA Online characters and progression.
Migration is not the same as keeping two continuously synchronized saves. Treat it as a one-time move: prepare the account and progress you want to carry over, complete Rockstar’s migration flow when prompted, and then continue on the PS5 version. If you play on PS4 after migrating, later progress may not automatically appear in the already-migrated PS5 data.

- GTA Online characters and progression can be migrated once to PS5.
- Rockstar’s guidance also covers GTAV Story Mode progress.
- The migration applies to progress, not to a requirement for buying Story Mode when you already own the eligible game.
If you do not own GTA V on PS4
You do not have to buy the full game just to enter GTA Online. The PS5 store has a standalone GTA Online edition whose listing says it includes GTA Online and that “GTAV: Story Mode can be purchased separately.” This is the direct choice for someone who wants the online component and does not need the campaign.

GTA Online standalone
The observed US PlayStation price was $19.99 on October 18, 2026. That is a storefront observation, not a permanent worldwide price. The standalone product gives you online multiplayer access to the PS5 version, subject to the PlayStation Plus requirement described below. It does not include Story Mode unless you buy that mode separately.
Full GTAV edition
The full PS5 edition includes both GTAV: Story Mode and GTA Online. On the US PlayStation page observed October 18, 2026, a GTAV bundle was offered at $24.99, reduced from an indicated original price of $49.99. The page showed that limited offer ending October 22, 2026.
At that observed promotion, the full bundle cost only $5 more than standalone Online, so it was the better value for anyone who wanted the campaign or wanted to preserve the option to play it. Once the promotion ends, or in another country’s store, the price difference may be substantially different. Compare the live prices in your own storefront before purchasing.

Can you play GTA Online without buying Story Mode?
Yes. The PS5 standalone edition is specifically designed for that use. It includes GTA Online, while Story Mode is listed as a separate purchase. You therefore do not need to pay for the full GTAV edition when multiplayer is your only objective.

Buying standalone Online also does not prevent you from adding Story Mode later if you change your mind. Check the product page for the separate Story Mode option in your region, because product names, bundles and prices can change.
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
Yes, for online multiplayer. PlayStation’s March 15, 2022 launch guidance states: “PlayStation Plus required to play (recurring fees apply).” Owning GTAV or the standalone GTA Online product does not replace that subscription requirement.
- You need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to use GTA Online multiplayer on PS5.
- The requirement applies whether you obtained the game through a purchase, a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade or a catalogue entitlement.
- Recurring subscription fees are separate from the game’s purchase price.
Story Mode itself is a single-player experience and is not the reason the PlayStation Plus requirement exists. The requirement concerns online multiplayer access.

The live US PlayStation page observed for this article labels GTAV as included with PlayStation Plus Extra. That can provide a way to play without buying the game separately while the title remains in the catalogue and your Extra subscription is active.

Catalogue inclusion is not a permanent ownership license. Games can leave a subscription catalogue, and availability can differ by country or storefront. Before relying on Extra, open the PlayStation Plus catalogue in your own region and confirm that the PS5 edition you intend to play is listed. You still need PlayStation Plus multiplayer access for GTA Online; catalogue access and multiplayer privileges are separate parts of the decision.

For a PS4 owner, paying for a second copy before checking the upgrade is unnecessary. For a new buyer, standalone Online is the lower-cost entry point when Story Mode has no value to you. During the observed October 2026 US promotion, the full bundle’s $5 premium made it the practical choice for anyone who wanted both modes.

Troubleshooting common purchase and upgrade problems
The PS5 version shows a price even though you own PS4 GTAV
Sign out of any secondary account and sign in with the account that bought the PS4 game. Open the account’s game library to confirm the PS4 entitlement, then return to the store and use the edition selector. A paid listing may be the full bundle rather than the no-cost upgrade. If the entitlement is not visible, do not purchase again until PlayStation support or the account’s transaction history confirms which account owns it.

You bought standalone Online but cannot access multiplayer
Check PlayStation Plus first. The game purchase supplies the software, while the subscription supplies the required online multiplayer access. Confirm that the subscription is active on the same console and account setup you use for GTA Online.
Your old character or save is missing
Use the one-time migration process associated with the PS5 version and the Rockstar account connected to your existing progress. Confirm that you launched the PS5 edition, not the PS4 version running through backward compatibility. Because migration is a one-time action, select the intended character and progress carefully before confirming.
The promotion is no longer visible
The $24.99 bundle offer was shown as ending October 22, 2026, and other storefronts may never have carried it. Compare the current standalone and full-edition prices in your region rather than assuming the observed US discount still applies.
What you do not need to buy
Neither GTA+ nor Shark Cards is required to start or play GTA Online. The necessary purchases are the game entitlement—either the standalone Online edition, the full GTAV edition or the eligible PS4-to-PS5 upgrade—and the PlayStation Plus subscription required for multiplayer. Optional in-game memberships or currency do not change that basic access path.
