Yes. The new DMZ is part of the paid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release, so you currently need to purchase MW4 to enter DMZ. The Standard Edition is sufficient; the Vault Edition adds premium content and a useful deployment bundle but does not unlock a different version of DMZ.
Digital preorders and prepurchases receive DMZ Early Access on October 20, 2026. The worldwide launch is October 23, 2026. Both versions require an internet connection, and console players need the applicable online multiplayer subscription.

What you must buy to play DMZ
Activision describes Modern Warfare 4 as a standalone release. It is sold separately at launch, and its full base game contains the new DMZ mode. There is no separate free DMZ download that bypasses the MW4 purchase requirement at launch.

That means the least expensive qualifying purchase is the Standard Edition. You do not need the Vault Edition, a campaign completion certificate, a special operator, or a DMZ-specific upgrade to enter the mode.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Activision has also stated that MW4 will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Until that planned inclusion arrives, a Game Pass subscription by itself does not provide launch access to MW4 DMZ.
Standard and Vault Editions compared
Both editions include the same DMZ access. The difference is the extra content bundled with Vault.
| Edition | DMZ access | Price example | Included extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Yes; includes the full base game and DMZ | US PlayStation listing checked October 18, 2026: $69.99 | Preorder bonuses where applicable |
| Vault Edition | Yes; the same DMZ access as Standard | US PlayStation listing checked October 18, 2026: $99.99 | Hostile Alliance Operator Pack; Special Forces Operator Pack; Signature Weapon Collection; one season of BlackCell; DMZ Deployment Bonus |
Those prices are a dated US PlayStation example, not a universal price. Storefront currency, taxes, regional pricing and later changes can produce a different total.
What the Vault DMZ Deployment Bonus contains
- One additional Active Duty slot
- Two Weapon Insurance Contracts
- Two Operator Rescue Beacons
- Two Fulton Drop Markers
- Two Medium Backpacks
- Two 2-Plate Carriers
These items are convenience and progression bonuses. They are not entry requirements. Buying Standard does not lock you out of DMZ maps, missions or the basic mode; it simply omits the Vault-only cosmetics, BlackCell season and deployment items.

When DMZ becomes playable
October 20: Early Access
Players who digitally preorder or prepurchase any MW4 edition receive DMZ Early Access beginning October 20, 2026. This applies to digital purchases; a physical reservation does not automatically provide the same early-access entitlement unless the retailer and platform explicitly supply a qualifying digital code.
October 23: Worldwide launch
The worldwide launch is scheduled for October 23, 2026. A player who buys the game after launch can play when the platform finishes granting the entitlement and the required download or update is installed.
Release times can differ by time zone and platform. Outages, staged availability and storefront delays can also prevent a mode from appearing exactly at the advertised minute, so a missing DMZ tile on launch day is not by itself proof that the wrong edition was purchased.

Internet and account requirements
Continuous internet connection
DMZ is online-only. Activision Support says MW4 uses texture streaming and therefore requires a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ. A one-time installation followed by offline DMZ play is not supported.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Plan for a stable connection during matchmaking and deployment. A brief interruption can stop a session even if the rest of the game is installed locally. If your connection is unreliable, resolve that before treating an entitlement error as an edition problem.
Console online subscriptions
Console online modes require the platform’s applicable subscription:
- PlayStation 5: PlayStation Plus
- Xbox Series X|S: Game Pass Essential
- Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo Switch Online
The subscription requirement is separate from buying MW4. Owning Standard or Vault does not replace the console service needed for online play.

Where you can buy and play MW4 DMZ
Activision lists these supported purchase and play platforms:
| Platform | DMZ availability | Online requirement or platform note |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Supported | Game Pass Essential is required for console online modes. An Xbox/Microsoft purchase may provide Xbox Play Anywhere access on console and PC. |
| Xbox on PC | Supported | Xbox Play Anywhere can provide console and PC access when purchased through the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem. |
| PlayStation 5 | Supported | PlayStation Plus is required for console online modes. |
| Battle.net | Supported | PC security requirements include TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. |
| Steam | Supported | PC security requirements include TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Supported | Nintendo Switch Online is required for console online modes. |
Buying on one storefront does not automatically mean the purchase transfers to every other ecosystem. The explicit exception described by Activision is Xbox Play Anywhere when the purchase is made through the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem. Select the platform on which you expect to play, and verify the store’s entitlement wording before paying.
How to get into DMZ
- Choose a supported platform. Confirm that your console or PC is one of the platforms listed above and that your PC can meet TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot checks where applicable.
- Purchase an edition of MW4. Standard is the minimum purchase for DMZ. Choose Vault only if its operators, weapon collection, BlackCell season or deployment bonus justify the additional cost.
- Install the game and updates. DMZ relies on online services and texture streaming, so allow the full installation and any launch-day patches to complete.
- Meet the service requirements. On console, activate the relevant PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online subscription. If prompted, link and verify a mobile phone number.
- Play during the correct window. Digital preorders can enter during Early Access from October 20, 2026. Otherwise, wait for the worldwide launch on October 23, 2026.
- Keep the connection active. DMZ cannot be played offline after the initial download.
Does Game Pass include DMZ?
Not at the 2026 launch. Activision’s launch guidance says players must purchase MW4 separately and that it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. A Game Pass subscription can still be the online-service requirement for Xbox console multiplayer, but that service requirement should not be confused with ownership of the MW4 game.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The Holiday 2027 plan is a future availability statement. Catalog timing and regional access can change, so check the Xbox store and current Activision announcements if you are deciding whether to buy now or wait.
Common access problems and what to check
DMZ is locked even though you bought MW4
- Confirm that the purchase completed on the same platform account you are using to launch the game.
- Check whether you are trying to play before the October 20 Early Access window or before the October 23 worldwide launch.
- Restart the game and allow the storefront to refresh the license after installation.
- Check for a service outage or a platform-wide rollout delay.
The game launches but will not connect
- Verify that your internet connection remains active; DMZ requires continuous connectivity.
- On console, confirm that the relevant online subscription is active.
- On PC, verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in firmware if the security check fails.
- Complete any requested phone-number verification.
You expected the Vault bonuses in Standard
Standard includes DMZ itself but not the Vault Edition’s operator packs, BlackCell season, Signature Weapon Collection or deployment bundle. Those are edition-specific extras, not missing DMZ functionality.
What is not required
- You do not need Vault Edition to access DMZ.
- You do not need to buy a separate DMZ product.
- You do not need to finish the campaign’s sixteen missions before entering DMZ. The sixteen-mission campaign figure is background information about MW4, not an access gate.
- You do not need to own a different Call of Duty title for the new mode.
Bottom line for each type of player
You want the cheapest launch access
Buy the Standard Edition on your chosen supported platform. Add the platform’s online subscription if you are playing on console, and maintain an internet connection.
You want cosmetic and progression extras
Choose Vault for its operator packs, Signature Weapon Collection, one BlackCell season and the listed DMZ Deployment Bonus. It does not provide a separate or required DMZ mode.
You already subscribe to Game Pass
At launch, the subscription alone is not enough. Activision says MW4 is planned for Game Pass in Holiday 2027, but until then you must purchase the game separately.
You are waiting for release day
Digital preorders receive Early Access from October 20, while the worldwide launch is October 23. Confirm the current store listing and Activision Support information immediately before purchase because pricing, service rules and platform availability can change.
