No—if you already have an Eternal character, you can use Season 15’s Rebirth feature instead of making a separate hero. Rebirth converts the selected Eternal character to the Seasonal Realm and resets it to level 1. Your class, name, appearance, and Normal or Hardcore status remain. You must first move that character’s equipment and personal-inventory items into the Eternal stash, because items left on the character are lost and prevent Rebirth.
If you have never made a Diablo IV character, create one normally and choose the Seasonal Realm during character creation. Leaving an existing hero untouched in Eternal is also an option: you can Rebirth a different hero or create another Seasonal character.

What changes in Season 15
Season 15, titled Season of Hell’s Legacy, introduces Rebirth as an alternative to starting with a completely separate character. Blizzard describes the feature this way: instead of having to create a new character at the start of each season, you can select an Eternal character and continue that hero’s adventures in the Seasonal Realm.
The conversion is not a way to carry your current level or equipped build directly into the season. The selected hero becomes a Seasonal character and returns to level 1, giving you the season’s fresh progression path while preserving the hero’s basic identity.

What Rebirth preserves
- The character’s class.
- The character’s name.
- The character’s appearance.
- Whether the character is Normal or Hardcore.
If the hero is saved in an ensemble, eligible cosmetic preferences can also transfer. The listed cosmetic categories include transmogs, pigments, mounts and mount accessories, pets, portals, and headstones. These are appearance and presentation settings; Rebirth does not preserve the hero’s level or seasonal progression.
What Rebirth resets
The converted character starts Season 15 at level 1. Treat the process as a new seasonal progression run using an existing identity, not as a shortcut that keeps your Eternal character’s current power. Your seasonal activities and advancement begin from the seasonal starting point.
Do you need a new character?
| Your situation | What to do | Result |
|---|---|---|
| You already have an Eternal character and want to play Season 15 | Use Rebirth on that Eternal character | The hero becomes Seasonal and starts at level 1 |
| You have no Diablo IV character yet | Create a character and select the Seasonal Realm | You begin with a new Seasonal hero |
| You want your current hero to remain unchanged in Eternal | Leave that hero in Eternal; Rebirth another hero or create a separate Seasonal character | Your original Eternal character is not converted |
| You want to keep playing an existing build without seasonal conversion | Continue using the character in Eternal | The character remains an Eternal hero rather than entering Season 15’s Seasonal progression |
Rebirth is therefore optional. It solves the “I want to use this hero’s identity again” problem, but it does not let one character exist in both realms with separate, simultaneous progress. The hero you select is the one being converted.

How to Rebirth an Eternal character safely
Prepare the character before confirming the conversion. Blizzard’s rule is strict: the character cannot be Reborn while it has equipment or items in its personal inventory, and retained items are lost when Rebirth occurs.

- LORD OF HATRED EXPANSION — Includes Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred Standard Edition and Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. The Diablo IV base game is required to play.
- IN-GAME EXTRAS — Get 1 Extra Stash Tab, 2 Additional Character Slots, and 3 Decor Items in World of Warcraft.
- NEW CLASSES AND REGION — Master two new classes and explore the ancient region of Skovos in the Lord of Hatred expansion.
- ACTION RPG ADVENTURE — Slay demons, master abilities, explore nightmarish dungeons, and find legendary loot in a dark open world.
- NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST MEPHISTO — Make your stand against the Prime Evil Mephisto in a rich new story featuring new enemies, regions, and narrative twists.
- Select the Eternal hero you want to convert. Check the class, name, appearance, and Normal or Hardcore status before proceeding. Rebirth keeps those identity choices, so selecting the wrong hero means starting the season with the wrong one.
- Remove every equipped item. Do not leave weapons, armor, jewelry, or other gear on the character. Move the items to the Eternal stash first.
- Empty the personal inventory. Transfer every item carried in the character’s inventory to the Eternal stash. Include items that are easy to overlook, such as consumables, crafting materials, quest-related objects, or anything occupying an inventory slot.
- Check the character again. The equipment slots and personal inventory must be clear. If the Rebirth option is unavailable, inspect both places for a remaining item.
- Choose Rebirth for the selected Eternal character. Confirm the conversion only after verifying that all items you intend to keep are stored in the Eternal stash.
- Begin Seasonal progression from level 1. The converted hero now belongs to the Seasonal Realm and follows the season’s progression rather than continuing the old Eternal level.
The stash step is the important safety measure. Rebirth is not an inventory-transfer service: items left on the hero are subject to the feature’s loss rule. Move anything valuable before confirming, even if you expect to replace it quickly.
What happens to your gear and items?
Rebirth treats the character’s worn and carried items differently from the character’s identity. Gear and items must be moved out of the equipment slots and personal inventory before conversion. Blizzard states that retained items are lost, and the feature cannot be used while those items remain on the character.
In practical terms, use the Eternal stash as the safe holding location before you select Rebirth. The stash preparation protects the items you want to keep in Eternal while allowing the hero to enter the Seasonal Realm with an empty loadout and a level-1 start. Do not assume that an item will be recovered automatically after the conversion; the documented requirement is to move it first.
Inventory checklist
- All equipped weapons and armor moved to the Eternal stash.
- Jewelry and other equipped accessories removed.
- Every personal-inventory slot checked and cleared.
- Consumables, materials, and miscellaneous items transferred.
- The correct character selected before confirming Rebirth.
Can you keep the same look and name?
Yes. Rebirth keeps the character’s class, name, and appearance, along with the Normal or Hardcore state. That makes it useful when you are attached to a particular hero’s identity but want to participate in the new season.

Rebirth versus creating a separate Seasonal character
Both choices put you into Seasonal progression, but they serve different preferences.
| Decision point | Rebirth | New Seasonal character |
|---|---|---|
| Starting level | Level 1 | Level 1 |
| Class and identity | Keeps the selected Eternal character’s class, name, and appearance | Chosen when you create the new hero |
| Normal or Hardcore status | Keeps the selected character’s status | Set for the new character during creation |
| Items on the character | Must be moved to the Eternal stash; retained items are lost and block the conversion | There is no existing character inventory to convert |
| Effect on the original hero | The selected Eternal hero is converted to Seasonal | Existing Eternal heroes remain unchanged |
| Cosmetic continuity | Eligible ensemble settings can transfer, including listed mount, pet, portal, and transmog preferences | Uses the new character’s chosen appearance and available cosmetic settings |
Choose Rebirth when preserving a particular hero’s identity matters and you are ready for a level-1 restart. Choose a separate character when you want to keep every existing Eternal hero exactly as it is, or when you prefer a clean character-creation decision.

A player without an existing character cannot use Rebirth because there is no Eternal hero to convert. Start character creation, choose the class and other available identity options, and select the Seasonal Realm. That creates a Seasonal character directly.

At the seasonal transition, Seasonal characters and their progression move to the Eternal Realm. The character does not remain permanently locked to Seasonal play. Seasonal-only activities and rules, however, do not continue as active Seasonal content after the transition.
This means the decision is about how to enter the season, not about permanently abandoning the hero afterward. A Reborn character progresses through Season 15 and later joins the Eternal roster when the season concludes, subject to the seasonal transition’s handling of seasonal-only elements.

Assuming Rebirth preserves your level
It does not. Every Rebirth conversion returns the hero to level 1. Select the feature because you want seasonal progression with that hero’s identity, not because you expect to retain the Eternal character’s power.
Best Value
Leaving one item equipped
A single remaining item can make Rebirth unavailable. Clear both equipment slots and personal inventory before trying again.
Trusting the character inventory with valuable gear
Items left on the character are covered by the loss rule. Transfer anything you want to keep to the Eternal stash before confirmation.
Rebirthing the wrong hero
Because class, name, appearance, and realm state follow the selected character, verify the hero at the selection screen before choosing Rebirth.
Expecting Eternal and Seasonal progress to run in parallel on one hero
The selected character is converted to Seasonal. If you want an unchanged Eternal version available while you play the season, leave that hero in Eternal and use another character for Seasonal play.
Quick Recap
The short answer for each common question
- “Do I need to make a new character for Diablo 4 Season 15?” No, not if you already have an Eternal character; use Rebirth.
- “Can I use my old character in Season 15?” Yes. Rebirth converts an Eternal character to Seasonal and resets it to level 1.
- “What does Rebirth do?” It changes an Eternal hero into a Seasonal hero while keeping the class, name, appearance, and Normal or Hardcore state.
- “Does Rebirth reset my character?” It resets the character’s level to 1 and starts a fresh Seasonal progression path.
- “What happens to my gear?” Move equipment and personal-inventory items to the Eternal stash first. Items left on the character are lost, and their presence prevents Rebirth.
