For Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, PlayStation says prior story knowledge is not required for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though the earlier games add context. “Marvel games” do not share one universal play order, so check the guidance for the specific series.
Do you need to play CONTROL before CONTROL Resonant?
No. Remedy’s support page says, “You don’t need to have played the original to begin Dylan’s story,” and identifies CONTROL Resonant as out now. It launched on September 24, 2026; check the store for your platform and region to confirm availability.
The original is useful background, not a prerequisite. In CONTROL, Jesse Faden searches for her missing brother Dylan inside the Federal Bureau of Control’s Oldest House. Resonant shifts the focus to Dylan. PlayStation describes the new game as a fresh entry point, while noting that returning players may recognize echoes of Jesse’s path and mysteries connecting the siblings.
Choose based on how much context you want
- Start with Resonant if you want Dylan’s story and would rather not catch up first.
- Play CONTROL first if you want Jesse’s perspective and more context for the siblings’ relationship and shared world.
Remedy Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen has described the games as siblings in a shared world, with the Faden siblings at the center and the perspective shifting between them. He said there is “no pressure” to play the first game before Resonant. That framing supports playing the original for added context—not treating it as required homework.

Do you need to play earlier Marvel games before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?
For Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, no. PlayStation says you can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but recommends the previous games to experience the developing narrative more fully.
The story order
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
PlayStation says Spider-Man 2 takes place roughly nine months after Miles Morales, which is set a year after Marvel’s Spider-Man. Play in that order for the fullest narrative progression; start with Spider-Man 2 if that is the game you want to play now. Platform availability and edition names vary, so check the listing for your platform before buying.

Why “Marvel games” does not have one play order
The guidance above applies to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man continuity, not every game featuring Marvel characters. Different Marvel titles may have separate stories and timelines. For another series, check that game’s own continuity and official advice rather than assuming the Spider-Man order—or its no-prior-knowledge guidance—applies.

For both examples, the practical question is whether you want the earlier character and story context, not whether an official source makes it a prerequisite. Remedy presents Resonant as playable on its own; PlayStation says Spider-Man 2 works without prior story knowledge while recommending the earlier games for a fuller narrative. Choose the predecessor games if that added context matters to you; otherwise, you can begin with the new installment.
