What you may miss by starting with no context
Starting directly with Red Dead Redemption does not remove essential information. You may simply encounter references, relationships or thematic echoes that feel more significant after playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Those are optional layers of recognition rather than comprehension tests. The game gives you the information needed for its own plot as you progress.
Should you play Red Dead Redemption 2 before Red Dead Redemption?

Rockstar’s official support hub lists separate entries for Bully: Anniversary Edition and Bully: Scholarship Edition. Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement also lists Bully and Red Dead Redemption as separate playable titles. Those separate editions and listings reflect how the games are offered: you can select Bully on its own without buying or completing another series.
What kind of first Rockstar game is Bully?
Bully is the natural starting point if you want a contained coming-of-age story, school routines, neighborhood exploration and a lighter, more mischievous tone than the Red Dead games. Red Dead Redemption 2
Choose this first when you prefer to begin earlier in the fictional history and spend your first hours with the prequel’s version of the gang and the frontier.
