No. Based on Rockstar’s published GTA VI story and character materials, you can start with GTA 6 without playing earlier Grand Theft Auto games first. That is an inference from what Rockstar has announced—not an explicit promise that the game will contain no references, returning characters, or events from earlier entries.
Why you can start with GTA 6
Rockstar’s announced story follows Jason and Lucia as they become caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida after an easy score goes wrong. The published synopsis and character profiles do not identify any previous GTA game as required background. Rockstar’s GTA VI page is the place to check for its current story and character details.
Lucia’s profile refers to her mother’s dreams dating back to their time in Liberty City. That gives Lucia some personal history, but Rockstar does not say that players need to know the events of GTA III or GTA IV to understand her story.
Can you play GTA 6 without playing GTA 5?
Nothing in Rockstar’s published GTA VI materials says you need to play GTA V first. If you want a recent-series refresher, GTA V Story Mode is an optional choice, not a confirmed preparation requirement or a stated source of essential GTA VI plot information. Rockstar Support describes Story Mode as a distinct part of GTA V and explains how access relates to GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; that guidance should not be assumed to apply to every platform. Check Rockstar Support’s Story Mode access details for the relevant platform information.

Do you need to know the old GTA story?
Rockstar has not explicitly guaranteed that GTA 6 will have no returning characters or references to earlier events. The careful answer is narrower: its published story materials do not establish prior games as prerequisites, so new players have a basis to start with GTA 6 without catching up on the series.
There is a limited historical example from GTA IV, but it does not settle the question of GTA VI continuity. In its 2009 Episodes from Liberty City FAQ, Rockstar answered a question about whether players needed The Lost and Damned before The Ballad of Gay Tony: “No. While it’s great to have knowledge of Episode 1’s story to get the most out of the revelations in Episode 2, it’s not essential. You can download and play The Ballad of Gay Tony on its own.” That answer concerned two GTA IV episodes, not GTA 6.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
Should you play an earlier game anyway?
Choose an older game only if it suits what you want from the series. A full replay takes more time than starting fresh, and it is not established as necessary for understanding GTA VI. If you are interested in GTA V’s story or atmosphere, Story Mode is a reasonable optional pick; check current availability for your platform before making plans to play it.
