No. You can start with Red Dead Redemption 2 without finishing, or even playing, the first game. It is a prequel set mainly in 1899, and its story introduces Arthur Morgan, the Van der Linde gang and the central conflict from the ground up.
The best order depends on what you value. Play Red Dead Redemption first for the original reveal structure and John Marston’s story as it was first told. Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first for fictional chronology, Arthur Morgan’s complete arc and the newer game’s presentation.

The two valid ways to play the series
The games form one connected story, but neither order makes the other impossible to understand. Red Dead Redemption is the predecessor released before Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar describes it as the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster. The second game moves the timeline backward and shows an earlier chapter of the same world.
| Order | Sequence | What it prioritizes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | Red Dead Redemption → Red Dead Redemption 2 | The way the original audience encountered the story, including its intended reveals | Players who care most about suspense and narrative recontextualization |
| Chronological order | Red Dead Redemption 2 → Red Dead Redemption | The fictional timeline and Arthur Morgan’s earlier story | Players who prefer events in in-world order or want to begin with the newer game |
Both routes are coherent. There is no required save file, tutorial completion or prior knowledge check that blocks you from beginning either title.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 works as a first game
PlayStation’s official overview opens with “America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs.” It then identifies Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as the center of the adventure. That setup gives a new player the setting, protagonist, group dynamics and immediate pressure without assuming familiarity with the first game.
The prequel structure also lets RDR2 establish its own questions. You follow Arthur’s obligations to his gang, the gang’s changing relationship with the law and the consequences of its choices. Those conflicts are understandable on their own; they do not depend on knowing where every character eventually appears.
You may recognize names, places or relationships sooner if you have played RDR1, but recognition is optional context rather than a prerequisite. A first-time player can complete the main narrative and understand its major turning points from the information presented in the game itself.

It preserves the original reveal design
Red Dead Redemption was the audience’s first view of this fictional world. Playing it first means later information in RDR2 can change how you interpret people, institutions and the gang’s history, rather than being information you already expected from the prequel.
This is not a question of one order containing more story. It is a question of when the games answer their questions. Release order allows the second game to function as a retrospective: details that were mysterious or emotionally loaded in the first game acquire additional context afterward.
It centers John Marston first
The first game’s story follows John Marston across the American West and Mexico as he attempts to bury his blood-stained past. That is the later part of the two-game arc. Starting there makes John your introduction to the series’ themes, then places Arthur’s earlier life in the gang after you already know the period and legacy that follow.
Rank #2
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed adventure.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the ground-breaking horror story expansion that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
- Experience the epic western adventures that defined a generation
It avoids a hardware-generation step backward
RDR2 has newer presentation and systems. Beginning with RDR1 lets the series move forward mechanically when you switch games. This is a preference about comfort and pacing, not a claim that the older game is unplayable or that the newer one is objectively better for every player.

It follows the fictional timeline
RDR2 is set mainly in 1899, twelve years before the 2010 Red Dead Redemption according to a 2020 academic discussion of the series. Playing it first presents the decline of the outlaw era before the later consequences shown in RDR1.
Chronological order is especially natural if you dislike prequels that jump backward after a completed story. You meet the gang and its history in the period when those relationships are active, then continue into John Marston’s later journey.
It puts Arthur Morgan at the beginning
Arthur is the playable protagonist of RDR2. His responsibilities, loyalties and changing view of the gang provide the emotional foundation for the prequel. If your main reason for starting the series is Arthur’s story, chronological order lets you experience that arc without first treating it as background to John’s.
It starts with the newer tutorial and interface
The newer game explains more of its systems through its opening hours and offers the presentation style many players now associate with the series. Afterward, moving to RDR1 means accepting an older design approach. Some players prefer this because they want the most modern introduction; others find the later mechanical transition less comfortable.

Choose an order by your priorities
If story reveals matter most
Choose Red Dead Redemption first. You will encounter the original narrative structure without importing expectations from its prequel. Continue to RDR2 afterward and treat the second game as an expansion of the world’s history.

- Dappled Black Thoroughbred
- Talisman & Medallion Gameplay Bonuses

If chronology matters most
Choose RDR2 first, then RDR1. The events proceed from the 1899 gang story into John Marston’s later period, avoiding a backward jump in the fictional timeline.
If Arthur Morgan is your main reason to play
Start with RDR2. Arthur is not a side character whose importance depends on John’s campaign; he is the lead of a full, self-contained narrative. You can then approach RDR1 as the continuation that follows the era Arthur inhabits.
If you are worried about missing context
Start with RDR2. Its official synopsis introduces the time period, the outlaw-gang premise and Arthur’s role directly. You might miss the effect of some callbacks that are designed for returning players, but you will not be missing the basic information required to follow the plot.
If older controls or presentation concern you
Start with RDR1 and move forward. The change to RDR2 then feels like an increase in technical and systemic complexity rather than a regression. If you are comfortable with older games and want the newest experience immediately, reverse the order.

John Marston and Arthur Morgan represent different points in the same broader history. John’s campaign in RDR1 is the later story; Arthur’s campaign in RDR2 explains an earlier period involving the Van der Linde gang. The connection is meaningful, but the games still give each protagonist a distinct motivation and immediate objective.
Playing RDR1 first can make familiar names and relationships in RDR2 feel like deliberate answers to old questions. Playing RDR2 first makes the later appearances and references in RDR1 part of a forward-moving history. Neither route requires you to memorize a character list before starting.
Current ways to access the games
Store listings change by platform, region, edition and promotion, so check the listing for your country before buying. The existence of a listing does not guarantee identical pricing or availability everywhere.

- PlayStation lists Red Dead Redemption 2 Standard and Ultimate editions for PS4, with Story Mode included. The PlayStation page records the PS4 release date as October 26, 2018.
- Rockstar’s current PlayStation 5 product page lists Red Dead Redemption and includes Undead Nightmare, presenting the complete single-player experiences.
Edition names are worth checking carefully. A listing that emphasizes Story Mode answers the single-player question, while an edition or platform page may describe additional content separately. Confirm the platform shown on the purchase page rather than assuming that a version for one PlayStation generation is identical to another.
A practical plan for first-time players
- Decide whether reveal order or timeline order is your priority. Pick RDR1 first for the original suspense; pick RDR2 first for the 1899-to-later progression.
- Check the exact platform listing. Verify that the product is available in your region and that the edition includes the Story Mode you want.
- Play the first game you choose without a lore guide. Both campaigns provide their own premise and objectives. External character summaries can reveal information the games intend to introduce gradually.
- Move to the other game when you are ready. You do not need to replay the first campaign or complete optional activities to understand the second one.
Rockstar’s launch announcement also named the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide by Piggyback. A guide can help with missions and collectibles, but availability and retailer terms should be confirmed on the listing you are considering; it is not needed to decide the play order or follow either story.
Should you buy Red Dead Redemption 2 first?
For most newcomers who simply want to enter the series, RDR2 is a safe starting point because it introduces its own setting and characters and places you at the beginning of the fictional timeline. Search for the exact platform and edition, such as “Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4,” and verify that Story Mode is included.
Choose Red Dead Redemption instead when preserving the original reveal structure is more important than starting with the newer presentation. That route gives John Marston’s later story first and lets the prequel supply additional history afterward.
The decision is therefore about experience, not eligibility: both games are designed to stand on their own, and either sequence can lead you through the complete two-game arc.
