No. You can start with Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater without playing any earlier Metal Gear game. PlayStation’s official FAQ describes it as a remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but places its story at the very beginning of the saga chronologically. For a new player who wants to understand Delta, starting with Delta itself is the clearest path.
Can you start with Metal Gear Solid Delta?
Yes. Prior knowledge is optional, not a requirement. The official PlayStation FAQ answers the question directly: “No. Although METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a remake of 2004’s METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, chronologically the story takes place at the very start of the Metal Gear Saga, making it a perfect starting point.”

That distinction matters because Metal Gear Solid 3 was released in 2004, after earlier games in the series, while its fictional events occur decades before them. Delta follows that same story position. You are not being dropped into the middle of an ongoing timeline; you are entering the saga at its earliest major point.

Why Delta works as a first game
The story begins in the 1960s
Delta is set during the Cold War in the 1960s. Its protagonist is Naked Snake, the soldier who will later be known as Big Boss. Because this is an early chapter in his life, you meet him before the later stages of the saga have occurred. You do not need a biography of Big Boss from another game to understand who he is at the start of this mission.
Starting here also gives the setting a natural introduction. The game establishes the political situation, the military assignment and Snake’s personal connection to the people involved as the operation develops. Earlier releases may give you information about later history, but that information is background rather than an entry requirement.
The central mission is self-contained enough to follow
The core assignment is to infiltrate Soviet territory and rescue weapons engineer Sokolov. The operation becomes more personal and dangerous after Colonel Volgin captures Sokolov and Snake must confront his former mentor, The Boss. Those relationships and objectives provide the immediate narrative framework. They are introduced as part of this story rather than assuming that you have completed the previous games.

You may recognize that the series eventually builds a much larger mythology around these figures, but you can understand the mission on its own terms: who Snake is, what he has been ordered to do, why Sokolov matters and why The Boss is central to the conflict.
What kind of remake is Delta?
Delta is a full, enhanced remake of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, not a new sequel that continues from a later release. PlayStation’s description uses that exact “full, enhanced remake” framing. The official FAQ says that the story, characters, voice acting and music are the same as in the 2004 game.
The remake is built with Unreal Engine 5 and includes quality-of-life additions. One specifically identified option is a modern control style, which is available alongside the original-style approach. These changes affect presentation and convenience, but they do not turn Delta into a different chronological chapter.

| Question | What the official information establishes |
|---|---|
| Is Delta a sequel? | No. It is a remake of the 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. |
| When does its story occur? | At the beginning of the saga, during the 1960s Cold War. |
| Who is the protagonist? | Naked Snake, who will later be known as Big Boss. |
| Are the story and characters replaced? | The official FAQ says the story, characters, voice acting and music are the same. |
| What technology powers the remake? | Unreal Engine 5. |
| Is there a newer control option? | Yes. An optional modern control style is included as a quality-of-life feature. |
For a first-time player, that combination is useful: you get the earliest chronological story with a current presentation and an optional control scheme intended to make the older design easier to approach.

Older games are optional context. They can deepen your appreciation of recurring characters and later consequences, but the official FAQ does not say that you must play them before Delta.
Recurring characters and relationships
Playing other entries first can make familiar names feel more significant because you already know that the series revisits certain people and ideas. That is an enrichment, not a prerequisite. Delta still introduces the relevant relationships for its own plot, including Snake’s connection to The Boss and the mission involving Sokolov and Volgin.
Later consequences
The wider saga shows how decisions and events connected to Naked Snake affect later chapters. Experiencing those later chapters beforehand can give you additional dramatic context, while playing Delta first lets you encounter the beginning before seeing its eventual ramifications. Neither order prevents you from following the main operation.
Historical comparison
If you enjoy studying how games evolve, the 2004 original offers a way to compare the remake’s presentation and controls with the earlier release. That is a reason to play the original at some point, not a reason to delay Delta unless comparison is your main goal.

| Your priority | Recommended starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Understand Delta with the least preparation | Play Delta first | Its story is set at the saga’s chronological beginning, and the official FAQ calls it a suitable starting point. |
| Experience the original 2004 presentation | Play Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater first or afterward | Delta remakes that game; the original gives you the earlier release’s presentation. |
| Explore the wider series after Snake Eater | Play Delta, then consider Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 | Official PlayStation information identifies the collection as an available related title for readers who want earlier entries. |
| Compare remake and original versions | Play both, in either order | The remake preserves the story, characters, voice acting and music while adding modern technology and quality-of-life options. |
The table is guidance rather than an official complete play order. PlayStation’s FAQ establishes that Delta can stand as a starting point, but the cited official material does not publish one definitive order for every game in the franchise.

- ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
- GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries

Three sensible play paths
Path 1: Delta first
- Start with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
- Follow the 1960s mission as Naked Snake without stopping to study the later timeline.
- After finishing, decide whether you want the original Snake Eater for historical comparison or other entries for broader context.
This is the best default for someone asking only whether prior games are necessary. It minimizes preparation and keeps the focus on the game you intend to play.
Path 2: Original first, Delta second
- Play the 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater if preserving its original presentation is your priority.
- Play Delta afterward as an enhanced remake of the same story.
- Pay attention to how the newer engine and optional modern control style change the experience without changing the established story, characters, voice acting or music.
This route is aimed at returning players, preservation-minded players or anyone who specifically wants to compare versions. It is not required for comprehension.
Path 3: Delta, then the collection
- Play Delta as your chronological entry point.
- Use Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 afterward if you want to explore earlier entries identified by PlayStation as related titles.
- Treat any full-series order you create as personal editorial guidance, because the official information cited here does not define one complete mandatory sequence.
Should you play MGS3 before Delta?
Only if you have a specific reason. Playing the original first can be worthwhile when you care about the 2004 release as a historical work, want to compare an original and a full remake, or already have access to the older version and prefer to begin there. It can also make changes in interface and presentation more noticeable.

If your question is whether the original is needed to understand the remake, the answer remains no. Delta is designed around the same story foundation and is positioned at the saga’s beginning. Requiring the 2004 game would contradict the official FAQ’s description of Delta as a perfect starting point.
There is also no need to pause for a complete franchise catch-up. Starting with several earlier releases may expose you to later chronology, terminology and character history before you reach the 1960s setting. That can be enjoyable for a dedicated series marathon, but it adds preparation without solving a problem Delta creates.

Konami announced Delta for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. PlayStation lists the PS5 release date as August 28, 2025. Those platform details tell you where the remake was announced and, for PS5, the listed launch date; they do not establish a universal release date for every platform or edition.

- The Jungle Battle of Reptiles: Compete with an environment where traps catch opponents and prey, dangers lurk in the shadows and sounds attract predators
If you are deciding between Delta and an older collection, verify the current platform, region and edition information for the version you intend to buy. Availability can differ by storefront and format, and the official play-order guidance does not depend on owning a particular edition.
Common mistakes new players make
Confusing release order with story order
The 2004 release date makes Metal Gear Solid 3 look like a later chapter if you read the series by launch year. In-universe chronology places its events at the start of the saga. Use those as two separate concepts: release order explains when players received a game; chronological order explains when its story occurs.
Assuming “remake” means “requires the original”
A remake can invite comparison, but Delta’s official description does not make the 2004 game a prerequisite. Its preserved story and characters give newcomers the necessary foundation inside the remake itself.
Expecting Delta to explain every later game
Being a chronological starting point does not mean Delta is a complete history of the entire franchise. It tells the story of its own 1960s operation. Later games add later events and consequences. If you finish Delta with unanswered questions about the broader saga, that is a reason to continue, not evidence that you started in the wrong place.
Turning a personal marathon into a rule
Fans may recommend different release-order or chronology-based routes. Those routes can be useful, but they should be labeled as preferences. The official material establishes that Delta is an acceptable starting point; it does not declare one mandatory sequence for every entry.

What should a first-time player know before pressing Start?
- You are playing a remake of the 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, not a sequel set after the later games.
- The story begins in the 1960s Cold War.
- You play as Naked Snake, the soldier who will later be known as Big Boss.
- The immediate mission concerns infiltrating Soviet territory and rescuing weapons engineer Sokolov.
- Colonel Volgin’s capture of Sokolov leads to a confrontation involving Snake’s former mentor, The Boss.
- Earlier games may add context about recurring characters and later consequences, but they are optional.
- An optional modern control style is available, so you do not have to approach the remake exactly as you would the 2004 release.
That is enough context to begin without turning the opening into a history lesson. If you later want more, the related collection gives you a route into earlier entries, while the original Snake Eater gives you a direct comparison with the source game.
The verdict
Play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater first if it is the game you want to experience. The official PlayStation FAQ explicitly says previous Metal Gear games are not required and identifies Delta’s 1960s story as the saga’s chronological starting point. Play the older games before it only when you specifically want the 2004 presentation, a release-history comparison or the perspective of a longer series marathon.
