Playing in release order adds context to recurring characters and relationships, but it is optional.
Can you start with any Uncharted game?
Yes. PlayStation’s official FAQ says that although the series has continuity, each game is designed to stand on its own. Its answer to which game to play first is to choose whichever one interests you.
That means prior games are not required to understand the central adventure in a later entry. What you may miss is background: familiar characters return, and their relationships develop across the series. PlayStation’s series overview presents the first three games as Nathan Drake’s connected adventures, followed by his later story in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
What order should you play them in for the most context?
If you want to follow Nathan Drake’s story and see the character history build in sequence, play the main entries in release order:

PlayStation groups the first three campaigns in UNCHARTED: The Nathan Drake Collection. That collection is a convenient way to play those entries together; Uncharted 4 is Nathan’s later adventure. This order is a recommendation for cumulative story context, not a requirement for understanding each game.
Where does The Lost Legacy fit?
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a standalone story starring Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. PlayStation describes it as playable on its own, while its characters and history connect to earlier games. For the fullest continuity, play it after Uncharted 4; if you mainly want its own adventure, you can start there. The official Lost Legacy page introduces its characters and premise.

UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection includes Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy. PlayStation describes both as standalone adventures on its collection page.

PlayStation does not quantify how much context is lost by skipping an entry, and the amount will depend on how much you value character history. For basic plot comprehension, you do not need to commit to the full series.
