Yes. To play the Tomb Kings in Total War: WARHAMMER III’s Immortal Empires campaign, you need the Total War: WARHAMMER II – Rise of the Tomb Kings DLC. You do not need to own WARHAMMER II itself. WARHAMMER III provides access to Immortal Empires; the Tomb Kings add-on unlocks the faction. Both must be owned through the same game client, such as Steam, Epic, or Microsoft/Game Pass, according to SEGA’s current ownership guide.
What you need to play the Tomb Kings
There are two separate requirements: the game that gives you access to the campaign, and the add-on that unlocks the faction. Owning WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires. To select and play the Tomb Kings there, you also need Rise of the Tomb Kings, a DLC originally released for WARHAMMER II.

Rise of the Tomb Kings unlocks four Legendary Lords: Settra the Imperishable, High Queen Khalida, Grand Hierophant Khatep, and Arkhan the Black. SEGA’s guide identifies these as the lords associated with the add-on; Steam’s product listing also describes the DLC as playable in Immortal Empires and lists the same four lords.
#1 Best Overall
- Games Workshop - Warhammer - Age of Sigmar - Warcry: Pyre and Flood (Expansion Set)
- Merciless flame-spewing servants of Nagash clash with aelven warrior-monks of the Lumineth
- Includes a scenery piece depicting the head of a ruined Seraphon statue
- Full rules for both warbands, plus lore, artwork, and campaign missions
- These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly – we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints.
Do you need to own WARHAMMER II?
No. Although the DLC’s title identifies it as WARHAMMER II content, SEGA says older-game DLC can be purchased without owning that original base game and can unlock its associated lords in WARHAMMER III. Steam’s listing likewise identifies either WARHAMMER II or WARHAMMER III as a base product required to play the DLC.
That distinction matters when checking a store listing: the fact that an add-on originated in an earlier game does not, by itself, mean you must buy that earlier game to use its faction in WARHAMMER III. For this specific faction unlock, the current SEGA guidance says you do not need WARHAMMER II.
Check your game client before buying
The ownership requirement is tied to the storefront or game client. SEGA names Steam, Epic, and Microsoft/Game Pass and says the base game and DLC must be owned on the same client. If you own WARHAMMER III through Steam but buy Rise of the Tomb Kings through a different client, do not assume the two entitlements will combine.
- Identify where you own WARHAMMER III. Check the client or account you use to launch the game.
- Check whether you already own Rise of the Tomb Kings there. Look in that same client’s library or downloadable-content listing.
- If you need the DLC, buy it through that same client. Confirm the listing is Total War: WARHAMMER II – Rise of the Tomb Kings.
- Launch WARHAMMER III and check the faction selection in Immortal Empires. The Tomb Kings should be available once the matching ownership is recognized.
This is an ownership compatibility rule, not a statement about cross-play. Being able to play with someone using another platform does not make purchases made through different stores interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some older guides say Immortal Empires needs more games
Older launch-era coverage can give a different answer about Immortal Empires access. Creative Assembly’s 2022 announcement used wording that tied access to owning all three base games. SEGA’s current ownership guide instead says owning WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires. For a current purchase decision, use that current guidance rather than carrying the older launch-era requirement forward.
This change in guidance does not remove the separate Tomb Kings requirement: access to the campaign and access to a particular DLC faction are different things. The faction unlock remains Rise of the Tomb Kings.
Quick purchase decision
- You own WARHAMMER III and want the Tomb Kings: Get Rise of the Tomb Kings through the same client.
- You own WARHAMMER III but not WARHAMMER II: You can still buy and use the Tomb Kings DLC in WARHAMMER III, according to SEGA’s guide.
- You own only WARHAMMER II: That does not provide access to the WARHAMMER III Immortal Empires campaign; the campaign access described by SEGA comes with WARHAMMER III.
- You own the base game and DLC on different clients: The ownership requirement is not met; purchases must be on the same client.
Prices and sale offers vary by store and region, so check the listing in the client where you own WARHAMMER III rather than relying on an old quoted price.
