No—not for every situation. One player can use the left and right Joy-Con together as one controller. Two people can sometimes share that same pair, with each person holding one Joy-Con horizontally, but only when the game and mode support that layout. Check the specific game’s controller options before buying another pair.

What one pair of Joy-Con can do

A Nintendo Switch normally includes a left Joy-Con and a right Joy-Con. They can be attached to the console, used separately, or connected wirelessly after being detached. When a game treats them as a pair, one player uses both pieces together for the full control layout: the analog sticks, shoulder buttons, face buttons and motion controls available to that software.

Nintendo’s pairing convention can be confusing. The left and right Joy-Con connect to the console as individual wireless controllers, so connecting both counts as two controllers in the system’s controller display. That does not mean one player must own two separately purchased controllers. It simply reflects how the console detects the two wireless devices.

In practical terms, the included pair is enough for:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
  • One player using both Joy-Con together.
  • Some two-player games in which each player uses one detached Joy-Con sideways.
  • Games that support another approved arrangement, such as a Joy-Con pair for one player plus a separate controller for someone else.

The deciding factor is the game’s supported control scheme, not the fact that the console reports two connected Joy-Con.

Can two people play with one Joy-Con each?

Yes, in compatible games. Detach the Joy-Con, rotate each one horizontally, and give one to each player. A single sideways Joy-Con uses its shoulder button and the buttons on its face as the controls for that player. The game may ask you to press a particular combination, such as the shoulder buttons, to register each controller.

This arrangement is not universal. Some games are designed around a complete left-and-right pair, require two full controllers, or support only one player in the selected mode. Others allow one Joy-Con per person only in a particular local multiplayer mode. The software’s controller screen is the authoritative check.

What to check before starting

  • Look for “local multiplayer,” “same-system multiplayer,” or a similar mode in the game’s menu.
  • Open the controller configuration screen and see whether it shows a single horizontal Joy-Con as an option.
  • Confirm the player count for the exact mode you want; a game can support two players in one mode and only one in another.
  • Check whether the console must be in tabletop or docked mode. A game may prohibit local multiplayer while the system is in handheld mode.

How to set up one Joy-Con per player

Use this sequence when the game supports individual sideways Joy-Con:

  1. Save or close the current game session if necessary. Some software detects controller assignments only when entering its player-select or multiplayer menu.
  2. Detach both Joy-Con. Press the release button on the back of each controller before sliding it off the console or grip.
  3. Open the game’s multiplayer or controller setup screen. Do not rely only on the Switch HOME menu; the game may have its own assignment step.
  4. Hold each Joy-Con horizontally. The shoulder button should be on the upper edge, with the stick and face buttons accessible to the player. Use the orientation shown by the game.
  5. Register the controllers. Press the buttons requested on screen. The software should display two player slots, each associated with one Joy-Con.
  6. Start the mode and test movement before beginning a match. If a player’s inputs are missing or reversed, return to the controller screen and repeat the assignment with the Joy-Con in the correct orientation.

If the game instead shows a left-and-right controller icon, it is asking one player to use both Joy-Con as a pair. In that case, a second player cannot be added with the same pair.

When you need another controller

Buy or borrow another controller when the game’s required layout cannot be supplied by one sideways Joy-Con per person. This commonly happens when the software needs two analog sticks, a larger button set, or a left-right pair for each player. The requirement is determined by the title and mode, so read the game’s local multiplayer instructions rather than assuming every Switch game behaves like a party game.

You may also need additional hardware when more than two people are playing. The included pair can provide two individual controllers only where the game accepts that setup. A third or fourth player requires additional compatible controllers, and the game must support that many participants.

Example: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Nintendo’s instructions for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe describe local multiplayer for two to four players on one Nintendo Switch. That is a game-specific example of a title that can use multiple controllers, including a one-Joy-Con-per-player arrangement in supported play. The same instructions state that this multiplayer mode cannot be played in handheld mode, so the console must be used in tabletop or docked configuration for that local setup.

Do not turn that example into a general Switch rule. Another game can have a different maximum, a different controller requirement, or no same-console multiplayer at all.

Handheld, tabletop and docked play

Console arrangement What it means for Joy-Con sharing Important qualification
Handheld Both Joy-Con are attached to the Switch and normally form one handheld control layout. A specific game may disable or restrict local multiplayer in handheld mode.
Tabletop Detach the Joy-Con and place the console on its stand; individual sideways Joy-Con can be used if the game supports them. Each player needs a clear view and enough room to hold the controller comfortably.
Docked The Switch displays on a television or external screen while detached Joy-Con connect wirelessly. Pairing capacity does not guarantee that the game supports the same number of players.

The physical position changes how you can share the included pair. In handheld mode, the Joy-Con are attached and cannot be handed to two players as independent wireless controllers. Detaching them for shared play generally means moving to tabletop or docked use, unless the game provides a separate supported arrangement.

Rank #3
Nintendo Blue/Neon Yellow Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible

How many controllers can a Switch pair?

Nintendo states that a Switch system can pair up to eight wireless controllers, subject to limits that vary by controller type and features. This is a console capability limit, not a promise that any individual game accepts eight players. A game may support two, four, or another number, and it may impose its own restrictions on the mix of Joy-Con and other controllers.

Think of the limits in two layers:

  1. System pairing: the console establishes wireless connections with compatible controllers.
  2. Game support: the software decides how many of those connected controllers become players and which layouts are valid.

If the console has paired the controllers but the game shows fewer player slots, that is normally a software limitation rather than a failed Joy-Con connection.

Included grip versus charging grip

The standard Joy-Con grip, model HAC-011, is included with the Nintendo Switch bundle identified by Nintendo. Slide both Joy-Con into it to create a more traditional single-player controller shape. You do not need this grip to use the Joy-Con as a pair; the controllers can also be held separately or used attached to the console.

The Joy-Con charging grip, model HAC-012, is a different accessory sold separately. It lets you continue playing with detached Joy-Con while they charge. Its purpose is power and convenience, not adding another player or changing which games support one Joy-Con per person.

Therefore, buying a charging grip will not turn one pair into two complete controllers. If your goal is two-player play, first verify that the game accepts one horizontal Joy-Con each. If your goal is uninterrupted play while the pair is detached, the charging grip addresses that separate need.

Choosing the right setup for your situation

Your situation Likely setup Do you need another pair?
One person playing a standard game Both Joy-Con together, either attached or in the included grip. No.
Two people in a game that supports sideways Joy-Con One detached Joy-Con held horizontally by each player. No.
Two people in a game requiring a full controller per player Each player needs a complete compatible controller; the included pair supplies only one paired layout. Usually yes, depending on the controller options.
Three or four local players Use every supported controller combination listed by the game. Often, because the included pair provides at most two individual Joy-Con.
Local multiplayer in a game that blocks handheld mode Use tabletop or docked mode with detached wireless controllers. Only if the game’s player setup requires more than the included pair.

Troubleshooting a two-player Joy-Con setup

The game sees both Joy-Con as one controller

Return to the game’s controller assignment screen and select its individual-controller option, if available. Reorient each Joy-Con horizontally and press the registration buttons shown on screen. If the only available icon depicts a left-right pair, that mode does not accept the shared setup.

One Joy-Con is not detected

From the HOME menu, open Controllers and choose Change Grip/Order. Follow the on-screen prompts with the controllers held in the orientation required by the game. If a Joy-Con still does not appear, reattach it briefly to the console to re-establish the connection, then detach it and repeat the assignment.

Inputs are rotated or mapped incorrectly

Most often, the Joy-Con was registered vertically when the game expected horizontal use, or vice versa. Cancel the player assignment, hold the controller exactly as illustrated, and register it again. Do not change button mapping until the game’s own orientation step has completed.

Multiplayer works in one mode but not another

Check the mode’s player-count and hardware notes separately. A title can permit two-player races but restrict a story mode to one player, or permit local play only while docked or in tabletop configuration.

Bottom line for buying decisions

You do not automatically need two Joy-Con sets for Nintendo Switch. The included left and right Joy-Con are enough for one player using a paired controller, and they can serve two players in games that explicitly support one horizontal Joy-Con per person. Purchase another controller only after checking the exact game, mode and console position you plan to use. Treat the eight-controller pairing figure as a system maximum, not as a universal multiplayer guarantee, and remember that the standard grip and charging grip solve different problems.
