No. You do not need Elixir or Dark Elixir to train your own troops in Clash of Clans. Since the March 2025 Clash Anytime update, troops, spells, and siege machines also join your army without a training wait. Donating troops or spells to clanmates is separate and can still cost Elixir or Dark Elixir.
What changed in troop training?
June 2022: training became free
On 26 June 2022, Supercell removed Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir costs for training troops, spells, and siege machines. Training time and housing-space requirements still applied after that change. Supercell’s Home Village Changes explains the update.

March 2025: the training wait ended
The Clash Anytime update went further: troops, spells, and siege machines no longer need to be trained before joining your army. Supercell also removed the need to heal Heroes. The change is described in the 24 March 2025 release notes; Supercell’s 11 March 2025 announcement introduced the rollout.

Does donating troops still cost Elixir?
Yes. Donating troops or spells to a clanmate is a separate action from building your own army, and donations can still use Elixir or Dark Elixir depending on what you donate. That cost does not mean you are paying to train your own troops.

Why do older guides mention training costs or timers?
They may describe rules that applied when they were published. Before June 2022, training troops, spells, and siege machines had resource costs. After those costs were removed, training timers remained until the March 2025 Clash Anytime update removed the wait to join your army.
