Blizzard describes Doctrine as a Support who brings Overwatch’s vampire fantasy to life with a dark, sophisticated kit focused on manipulating lifeforce on both sides of a fight. - Should you amplify one teammate or improve your own mobility? Vital Drone and Crimson Veil answer different problems.

These are strategic interpretations of the documented effects, not published performance guarantees. Exact damage, healing, cooldown, range, and duration values can change with balance updates, so use the current in-game ability panel for those numbers.
Eternal Scepter: heal at range, harm at range
Base behavior
The Eternal Scepter is Doctrine’s mid-to-long-range primary weapon. When aimed at an ally, its projectiles heal. When aimed at an enemy, they deal damage. That dual purpose means Doctrine can remain relevant while the team is healthy: he can apply pressure rather than waiting for someone to lose life before contributing.
The weapon’s range supports a backline or off-angle position, but the same flexibility creates a constant targeting decision. A projectile directed toward an ally preserves that teammate’s ability to stay in a fight; a projectile directed toward an enemy helps force space or finish a vulnerable target. Doctrine therefore gains value from reading the next few seconds, not merely reacting to the health bar that is lowest at the instant he fires.

When empowered by Infuse, the Scepter’s projectiles become larger and pierce targets. The larger projectiles make the weapon more forgiving to aim, while piercing lets a shot affect targets lined up behind one another. In practical terms, look for moments when allies and enemies are clustered, when an opponent is hiding behind a frontline target, or when several teammates need healing along a shared path.
Infused Scepter is still a choice between sustain and pressure. Piercing projectiles do not remove the need to identify friend from foe; they simply increase the value of a well-timed line. Save the empowerment for a meaningful formation or a sequence in which several shots can benefit from the larger, piercing behavior rather than spending it on an isolated target by habit.

What Infuse does
Infuse empowers Doctrine’s next ability. Blizzard presents it as a way to make an ability more potent when the moment calls for it. The effect is ability-specific: the Scepter gains larger, piercing projectiles; Vital Drone extends its benefit to Doctrine; Crimson Veil grants free flight; and the ultimate is a separate fight-wide resource rather than an Infuse replacement.

How to choose the target ability
Use Infuse by identifying the problem you need to solve before activating it:
- Team damage or healing through a formation: choose the Eternal Scepter when targets are aligned or several projectiles can benefit from piercing.
- A teammate who must keep dealing damage: choose Vital Drone to add Doctrine to the drone’s attack-speed and life benefits.
- Immediate personal danger or a difficult angle: choose Crimson Veil for free flight while dashing.
This makes Infuse a planning tool rather than a button to press on cooldown. The best use depends on which resource is currently scarce: allied health, offensive tempo, or a safe route through space.
Common timing mistakes
- Activating Infuse before deciding whether the next problem is ally survival, enemy pressure, or movement.
- Using an empowered single-target effect when the fight is about to create a cluster that would have made piercing shots or a team-wide drone more valuable.
- Saving Infuse indefinitely. A potential effect that is never used contributes nothing; spend it when the improvement clearly changes the next exchange.
Vital Drone: amplify one ally, then yourself when infused
Base Vital Drone
Vital Drone sends a drone to an ally. The drone grants that ally attack speed and life benefits. This is Doctrine’s single-target amplification tool: attach it to the teammate who is actively dealing damage, absorbing pressure, or about to take a high-value engagement.
An attack-speed benefit is most useful when the recipient can immediately make attacks. A life benefit matters when that same recipient is expected to remain exposed. The drone is therefore more than a generic heal; it is a way to increase the value of a teammate’s next window of action while improving their ability to survive it.
Infused Vital Drone
Infusing Vital Drone makes its benefit apply to Doctrine as well as the ally. The decision shifts from “Which teammate needs help?” to “Which teammate and I can convert this shared boost into the most advantage?” Use it when you intend to participate in the same exchange, such as supporting an ally’s push while firing the Scepter yourself.

Because the base drone is ally-focused, the infused version is especially valuable when Doctrine cannot safely remain a passive backliner. It lets him accompany the empowered teammate without giving up his own attack-speed and life benefits. The exact numerical strength and duration are not specified in Blizzard’s qualitative description, so judge its value by the fight’s timing and target selection rather than an assumed threshold.

Choosing the recipient
- Identify the ally who can act immediately. A teammate rotating away or waiting to respawn cannot convert the boost.
- Check whether that ally is about to take pressure or has a clear target. Vital Drone is strongest when attack speed and extra life matter at the same time.
- Decide whether Doctrine will join the exchange. If yes, Infuse can turn the drone into a shared offensive and survivability window; if no, reserve Infuse for another ability.
Crimson Veil: four-direction dashes and damage reduction
Base behavior
Crimson Veil lets Doctrine dash forward, backward, left, or right while reducing incoming damage. The four-direction choice gives him more than a forward escape: he can retreat, strafe out of a firing lane, or cross sideways to a new angle. Damage reduction makes the movement a defensive action as well as a repositioning tool.
Use the direction that solves the immediate threat rather than always dashing toward the enemy. A backward dash can break line of sight; a lateral dash can leave a predictable lane; a forward dash can move Doctrine through danger when reaching cover or an ally is more important than maintaining distance.
Infused Crimson Veil
Infusing Crimson Veil grants free flight. That expands the routes available during the dash and lets Doctrine exploit vertical space that a ground-bound movement option cannot reach. Free flight can open an escape over terrain, create a high angle for the Scepter, or let him follow an ally into an elevated engagement.
The defensive value remains central. Do not treat free flight as permission to enter an isolated position without an exit. Its strongest use is often to combine damage reduction with a route that would otherwise be unavailable, then return to a position from which Doctrine can continue healing or damaging.
Deliverance: the ultimate that changes health rules
What Deliverance does
Deliverance launches a swarm of drones. Allies receive additional life in the form of Overhealth, while enemies have their maximum health reduced. Blizzard summarizes the design as: “Allies gain Overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited.” The ultimate therefore affects both sides of an engagement instead of merely restoring one teammate.
Overhealth gives allied players more room to remain in the fight. Reducing enemy maximum health makes opponents easier to finish and limits the amount of life they can carry through the encounter. Together, those effects create a resource-denial tool: your team gains a larger margin for error while the opposing team loses part of its margin.

When to use it
- Objective contests: the allied Overhealth can help teammates stay present while the enemy health reduction makes trades more favorable.
- Coordinated pushes: activate it when several allies can act during the same window, so the swarm’s team-wide effect is not reduced to one isolated duel.
- Enemy commitment: if opponents have already entered a confined fight, reducing their maximum health can make the exchange difficult for them to disengage from.
Deliverance is not described as a resurrection, cleanse, or instant full heal. Its documented value comes from changing effective health on both teams. Because Blizzard provides qualitative effects rather than numeric values here, use the ultimate around a clear engagement rather than relying on an assumed amount of Overhealth or a specific maximum-health percentage.

Infuse strengthens the next ability, while Deliverance is Doctrine’s ultimate resource. Do not hold the ultimate waiting for an Infuse interaction that the official description does not establish. Instead, decide independently whether the fight needs Deliverance’s allied Overhealth and enemy maximum-health reduction, then spend Infuse on the next ability that best exploits the resulting situation.

Movement-triggered self-heal passive
The official hero page lists a passive that heals Doctrine when movement conditions are met. The available description does not provide a numeric trigger, healing amount, or timing window. Treat it as a reason to keep moving deliberately between positions rather than standing still in the open, but consult the current game client for the exact activation rules.
Saving Grace
Saving Grace is a minor perk that gives a Vital Drone target an immediate heal. It adds a direct rescue component to the drone: the chosen ally receives the drone’s documented attack-speed and life benefits, plus an immediate heal from the perk. Select it when the first moment of contact is likely to determine whether the recipient can use the rest of the amplification.
Blood Drain
Blood Drain is a minor perk that heals Doctrine when the Eternal Scepter deals damage. It rewards a more aggressive Scepter pattern, but it does not remove the need to heal allies. The perk is most relevant when Doctrine can safely pressure an enemy while maintaining enough attention on the team’s health and positioning.
Transfusion
Transfusion is a major perk: dealing damage or healing reduces Infuse’s cooldown. This ties Doctrine’s resource loop to active Scepter use. A player who alternates meaningful damage and healing can regain access to empowered abilities more often, although the exact reduction is not stated in the official qualitative description.

Life’s Toll
Life’s Toll is a major perk that lowers Doctrine’s maximum life in exchange for stronger Eternal Scepter healing. It trades personal durability for greater output. That trade is more attractive when Doctrine can maintain safe positioning and consistently convert stronger healing into ally survival; it is less forgiving when he is frequently exposed or forced to duel.

How to play Doctrine through a fight
Before contact
Take a position that gives the Scepter a clear line to both allies and likely enemy approaches. Identify the teammate most likely to receive Vital Drone, and note at least one Crimson Veil route to cover. Decide what would make Infuse worthwhile in the next exchange: a cluster for piercing shots, a shared drone window, or a flight path out of danger.
During the first exchange
Use the Scepter according to the team’s immediate need. Heal the ally who can remain active if restored; damage an enemy when pressure can force them away or create a finish. Apply Vital Drone to the ally who is actually entering the fight, not merely the ally who is closest to Doctrine. If the battle moves toward Doctrine, use Crimson Veil’s directional dash to preserve a useful angle while reducing incoming damage.

Spend Infuse when its enhanced behavior changes the geometry of the fight. Piercing projectiles matter when targets line up, an infused drone matters when Doctrine and an ally commit together, and free flight matters when ordinary ground movement cannot reach safety or a valuable angle. Use Deliverance when multiple allies can exploit Overhealth and enemies are committed enough for reduced maximum health to affect the outcome.
After the engagement
Return to the sustain-versus-pressure decision. If Blood Drain is equipped, safe Scepter damage can restore Doctrine while he keeps contributing, but the team’s health remains the priority. If Transfusion is equipped, meaningful healing and damage also work toward another Infuse, creating a loop in which active support replenishes the next empowerment.
What the official descriptions do not establish
Blizzard’s published hero descriptions explain Doctrine’s effects but do not provide the numeric balance values needed for frame-by-frame optimization. They do not establish exact projectile damage or healing, drone duration, attack-speed percentage, life values, dash distance, damage-reduction percentage, flight duration, Overhealth amount, enemy maximum-health reduction, passive trigger timing, or perk cooldown reductions. Those figures can also vary by patch. Use the in-game ability details for the live values and treat the strategic guidance here as effect-based rather than a substitute for current patch notes.
What is established is the shape of the kit: a ranged Support who can switch between healing and damage, empower one next ability, amplify an ally, move defensively in four directions, and alter the effective health of an entire fight with Deliverance. Mastery comes from matching each effect to the problem in front of you instead of treating every button as a generic damage increase.
