Does a 240Hz TV or Monitor Make a Difference for Xbox Series X|S?

A 240Hz screen cannot raise Xbox Series X|S above 120Hz. Here’s when 120Hz matters and how to check display compatibility over HDMI.

No—not beyond 120Hz. Xbox Series X|S supports display output up to 120Hz, so a 240Hz screen cannot make the console output at 240Hz. A compatible 120Hz display can still improve the experience in games with modes that render above 60 frames per second, but choosing 120Hz in the console settings does not make every game run at 120fps.

What 240Hz means for an Xbox

Xbox lists Series X|S output at up to 120Hz; its specifications describe the console as supporting up to 120 frames per second. Xbox’s console comparison lists “up to 120 FPS,” and its display setup guide says Series X|S supports up to 120Hz. A display’s 240Hz rating is therefore an unused upper limit when the source is an Xbox Series X|S.

That does not make 120Hz irrelevant. If a game offers a mode above 60fps and the display, HDMI input, cable and console settings support 120Hz at the chosen resolution, the screen can show more frequent updates than a 60Hz display. The result depends on the game and mode; the console’s selected refresh rate is not a promise that a game will render at 120fps continuously.

Refresh rate is not the same as frame rate

Refresh rate is how often a display can update its image. Frame rate is how many frames a game renders each second. A 120Hz setting allows the Xbox to send a high-refresh signal, but a game must offer a suitable higher-frame-rate mode to take advantage of it. Some games or modes may target lower frame rates, and performance need not stay at a target throughout play. Xbox explains these distinctions in its guide to 4K gaming at 120Hz.

What to prioritize when choosing a display

For an Xbox-only setup, compare the exact 120Hz modes available over HDMI rather than choosing by the largest refresh-rate number on the box. Xbox’s monitor guidance identifies 4K at 120Hz over HDMI 2.1 as a Series X|S use case. The best combination for a particular buyer still depends on budget, screen size, image quality and the games they play.

  • Resolution at 120Hz over HDMI: Check the model’s supported resolution-and-refresh combinations for the HDMI input you will use. A specification showing 240Hz over DisplayPort does not establish that the monitor supports the desired mode over HDMI.
  • VRR: Variable refresh rate is an Xbox feature and can be worth comparing alongside refresh rate, especially when a game’s frame rate varies. See the Xbox feature comparison.
  • HDR and image quality: Compare actual picture performance as well as resolution and refresh rate; a 240Hz label alone says little about image quality. Xbox’s monitor announcement also highlights HDR.
  • Latency and gaming mode: Check the display’s gaming settings and latency information for the specific model rather than assuming a higher refresh rating guarantees lower input lag.
  • Size, viewing distance and cost: Choose a screen that suits the space and budget. For Xbox-only use, paying extra solely for the ability to refresh at 240Hz does not raise the console’s output ceiling.

A 240Hz monitor can still make sense if the same display will be connected to a PC that can use refresh rates above 120Hz. That is a benefit of the PC source, not of Xbox Series X|S.

Check compatibility before buying or troubleshooting

Supported modes can differ by display model and connection. Xbox notes that advanced display features may require HDMI 2.1 and that some televisions enable them only on particular HDMI ports. Use the display’s exact manual or specifications to confirm the chosen port supports the resolution and refresh rate you want. Xbox’s setup guide covers the relevant console and TV checks.

For Series X, Xbox recommends using the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 features. Its HDMI guidance also explains that certain display features are port-specific. A monitor that reaches a particular resolution and refresh rate only through DisplayPort will not provide that mode to an Xbox through DisplayPort; the console’s video connection is HDMI.

Set and verify 120Hz on Xbox

  1. Connect the console to the display’s HDMI port that supports the desired resolution and refresh rate. If you are troubleshooting, connect the Xbox directly to the display rather than through another device.
  2. On the Xbox, open Settings → General → TV & display options → 4K TV details. Review the capabilities the console detects for the connected setup.
  3. Under Settings → General → TV & display options, choose the resolution and select 120Hz for refresh rate only if the connected display and HDMI path support it.
  4. If 120Hz is unavailable, check that you are using the correct HDMI port, enable the display’s relevant enhanced or gaming mode, and confirm that the specific resolution supports 120Hz. Recheck the console’s detected capabilities after changing the connection or display settings.

The console’s detected capability list is a practical check of the current connection, not a substitute for confirming the display’s model-specific HDMI specifications. Xbox documents the menu and troubleshooting checks in its 120Hz setup guide.
