In the 2014 fifth-edition rules, a brief combat does not automatically break a long rest. Fighting is strenuous activity, but the rest only has to restart after at least one hour of strenuous activity. The 2024 Basic Rules use a different system: a long rest includes at least six hours of sleep, and each interruption adds one hour to the time needed to finish. Always identify the edition before applying either answer.
The short answer depends on your edition
“Does combat break a long rest?” has two different answers in current Dungeons & Dragons rules. Under the 2014 fifth-edition wording, combat is one of the examples of strenuous activity, but the interruption must last at least one hour before the characters restart the rest. A short encounter therefore does not, by itself, reach the stated reset threshold.

The 2024 Basic Rules changed the structure. They describe a long rest as including at least six hours of sleep and no more than two hours of light activity. When a rest is interrupted, one additional hour is added for each interruption needed to finish it. The 2024 text does not repeat the 2014 “at least one hour of strenuous activity” test, so importing that older threshold creates the wrong result.
If your group is using a house rule, an adventure-specific rule, or a different version of the rules, use that table’s stated procedure. Wizards of the Coast’s guidance for fifth-edition rules questions is to check the applicable rulebook and Sage Advice, with the Dungeon Master making the final ruling for the game.

What the 2014 rules actually say
The basic long-rest requirement
The 2014 Player’s Handbook defines a long rest as at least eight hours of extended downtime. During that period, a character sleeps or performs light activity such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch, for no more than two hours. The character must complete the required rest to receive its benefits.
The interruption sentence is the part that controls combat: if the rest is interrupted by a period of strenuous activity lasting at least one hour, including walking, fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity, the characters must begin the rest again to gain any benefit.
Why the one-hour phrase matters
“At least 1 hour” is a condition, not a suggestion. Fighting is explicitly classified as strenuous, but the text ties the restart consequence to a period of that activity reaching the one-hour mark. A three-minute ambush, a ten-minute battle, or a single round of combat is strenuous activity in the ordinary sense, yet it does not meet the duration stated in the 2014 rule.
That does not mean characters can treat combat as light activity. It means the consequence is specific: the rest restarts when the strenuous interruption reaches the stated duration. A table may still decide that a complicated sequence of movement, pursuit, spell use, and fighting forms one continuous period, but that is an adjudication of the facts rather than a new printed threshold.

2014 examples
| Situation | Result under the 2014 wording | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A five-minute fight with wandering monsters | The rest does not automatically restart | Fighting is strenuous, but the encounter is shorter than one hour. |
| A 20-minute combat followed by 40 minutes of pursuit and fighting | The DM decides whether this is one continuous 60-minute strenuous period; if it is, restart the rest | The rule speaks of a period lasting at least one hour, not a universal encounter-counting system. |
| A battle that lasts 65 minutes | Restart the long rest | The strenuous activity has reached the one-hour threshold. |
| Standing watch while reading and talking | It can fit within the light-activity allowance | Those activities are specifically listed as compatible with the rest, subject to the two-hour limit. |
The table’s timing should follow the actual fiction. If the characters fight for ten minutes, return to camp, and resume sleeping, the written rule does not say that the ten-minute fight alone erases all prior rest. If they remain engaged in strenuous adventuring for an hour, the restart consequence applies.
Does casting a spell break a 2014 long rest?
The 2014 Sage Advice Compendium clarifies the activity category: “Spellcasting is more strenuous than the activities listed on page 186 of the Player’s Handbook: ‘eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.’” That statement distinguishes spellcasting from the light activities that can occur during a rest.
Spellcasting is therefore strenuous for this purpose, but the same duration rule still matters. Casting one spell does not automatically equal one hour of strenuous activity. A character who casts a quick defensive spell during an otherwise quiet watch has performed an activity the Sage Advice Compendium classifies as more strenuous than the listed light tasks; the DM must then determine whether the surrounding activity amounts to at least one hour of strenuous interruption.

Repeated casting, ritual work, battlefield preparation, or other adventuring actions may create a longer continuous period. The 2014 text does not provide a stopwatch procedure for combining separate events, so describe what the characters did and apply the one-hour test to that period rather than treating every individual spell as an automatic reset.

How the 2024 Basic Rules change the answer
Sleep and light activity
The official 2024 Rules Glossary uses a different formulation. During a long rest, a character sleeps for at least six hours and performs no more than two hours of light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch. The wording focuses on the required sleep and the permitted amount of light activity rather than repeating the 2014 eight-hour-and-one-hour-restart sentence.
One extra hour for each interruption
Under the 2024 glossary, if the rest is interrupted, finishing the rest requires one additional hour per interruption. The cited rule does not establish that every interruption is specifically combat, nor does it say that an interruption must last one hour. Consequently, you should not import the 2014 threshold when adjudicating a 2024 game.
For a 2024 table, first decide whether the event actually interrupts the rest under the glossary. If the DM treats an encounter as an interruption, add one hour for that interruption when determining when the rest is complete. A short fight may therefore affect the completion time under the 2024 structure even though it would not reach the 2014 reset threshold. The rules excerpt does not supply a combat-specific definition, so the DM’s interpretation of the event matters.

- A brief attack during sleep: Determine whether the attack interrupts the rest. If it does, add one hour to the time required to finish; do not apply the 2014 one-hour strenuous-activity test.
- Several separate attacks: If the DM counts each as a separate interruption, each adds an hour. If they are one continuous incident, the DM may treat them as one interruption.
- A spell cast during watch: The 2014 Sage Advice classification should not be presented as a 2024 rule. Use the 2024 glossary’s interruption wording and the DM’s ruling about whether the spell actually interrupts the rest.
2014 and 2024 side by side
| Rules element | 2014 fifth edition | 2024 Basic Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep/rest structure | At least eight hours of extended downtime; sleep or light activity, with no more than two hours of light activity | At least six hours of sleep and no more than two hours of light activity |
| Combat example | Fighting is listed as strenuous activity | The cited glossary excerpt does not identify fighting as a specific interruption example |
| Spellcasting | Sage Advice classifies it as more strenuous than listed light activities | Use the interruption wording in the 2024 glossary; do not assume the 2014 classification supplies the test |
| Interruption consequence | At least one hour of strenuous activity means the characters begin the rest again | Each interruption adds one hour to the time required to finish |
| Does a short fight automatically reset the rest? | No, not unless the relevant strenuous period reaches at least one hour | The text has no 2014-style one-hour threshold; whether the fight is an interruption is a DM adjudication |
A practical adjudication procedure for the table
- Identify the rules version. Confirm whether the campaign is using the 2014 fifth-edition text or the 2024 Basic Rules. Do not combine the two interruption systems.
- Describe the activity precisely. Separate sleeping and listed light activities from movement, fighting, spellcasting, pursuit, or other adventuring actions. The details determine which rule applies.
- Measure the event using that edition’s test. In 2014, ask whether a strenuous period lasted at least one hour. In 2024, ask whether the event interrupts the rest and then count the applicable interruptions.
- Apply the consequence once. A qualifying 2014 interruption restarts the rest. A qualifying 2024 interruption adds an hour per interruption. Do not add a 2024 hour and also restart under the 2014 rule.
- State when the characters can finish. Tell the players whether they resume the original rest, start over, or need additional time. Clear timing prevents arguments when spell slots, hit points, or class features depend on completing the rest.
Common edge cases
Multiple short encounters
The 2014 rule specifies a period lasting at least one hour. It does not expressly say whether several separated encounters should be added together. If the party fights for ten minutes, rests for twenty, and fights again for ten, decide whether those are separate interruptions or one continuing episode. Explain the ruling consistently so players know how future watches will work.

Walking to investigate a noise
Walking appears in the 2014 list of strenuous examples. A character who leaves camp to investigate may therefore be performing strenuous activity, but the restart consequence still requires the stated one-hour period. In 2024, use the interruption procedure instead of the old duration test.
Standing watch
Standing watch is specifically listed among the 2014 and 2024 examples of light activity, within each edition’s limit. Fighting while on watch is a different activity from watching quietly. Resolve the combat portion under the edition’s interruption rule, then resume the rest if the characters are able to do so.
Healing and tending wounds
Tending to wounds is included among the 2014 light-activity examples referenced by Sage Advice. That does not make every medical action harmless: movement, spellcasting, or an extended rescue can change the activity’s character. Judge the actual sequence rather than labeling an entire scene “rest” or “combat” in the abstract.

The printed rules provide the framework, but they cannot specify the duration and continuity of every fictional event. Wizards of the Coast advises checking the relevant rule source and Sage Advice for fifth-edition disputes and recognizes the DM as the final authority for what applies at that table.
A good ruling identifies the edition, quotes the operative condition, and explains the timing. For a 2014 game, say whether the strenuous activity reached one hour. For a 2024 game, say whether the event counts as an interruption and how many additional hours it creates. Applying the same test to every character avoids selectively resetting one player’s rest while allowing another’s identical activity.
Quick Recap
Quick reference checklist
- 2014 rules: fighting is strenuous, but the restart trigger is at least one hour of strenuous activity.
- 2014 rules: a brief fight alone does not automatically erase the rest.
- 2014 rules: spellcasting is more strenuous than the listed light activities, according to the 2014 Sage Advice Compendium; the one-hour threshold still applies.
- 2024 rules: use at least six hours of sleep, no more than two hours of light activity, and one added hour for each interruption.
- 2024 rules: do not import the 2014 one-hour threshold or assume the glossary excerpt defines every combat as an interruption.
- When the wording does not resolve the fictional details, the DM makes the table’s ruling and should apply it consistently.
