Microsoft’s Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable is specifically designed to charge during play, or after you stop, including while the Xbox is in standby. The important qualification is hardware compatibility: USB-C Xbox controllers, older micro-USB models and Xbox 360 Play & Charge equipment do not all use the same battery system.
What “rechargeable Xbox controller” actually means
Most Xbox Wireless Controllers are not rechargeable as a single sealed device. They use either two AA cells or a removable rechargeable battery pack. The controller can run from USB power while connected, but the cable recharges the batteries only when the installed pack is designed to accept charging through the controller.

That distinction matters because a USB-C cable is not, by itself, a universal charger for every battery placed in an Xbox controller. Microsoft’s current rechargeable pack is made for Xbox Wireless Controllers with a USB-C port. Older controllers and Xbox 360 hardware use different connectors or charging arrangements.

Can you play Xbox while the rechargeable battery is charging?
Yes. Microsoft states that its Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable lets you “Recharge while you play or afterwards, even when your XBOX is in standby.” The product was released on November 10, 2020, and Microsoft specifies a full charge in under four hours.

Microsoft rates the pack for up to 30 hours per charge. That is a maximum manufacturer figure, not a guaranteed runtime: Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with a headset, other accessories, usage and additional factors. Its testing used preproduction units, so actual playtime can differ from the headline figure.
While the cable is connected, the controller remains usable for gameplay. You can connect it before starting a session, plug it in when the battery becomes low, or leave it connected after play so it charges in standby.
How to charge and play at the same time
- Confirm the battery type. Make sure a rechargeable pack intended for your Xbox controller is installed. Do not assume that ordinary rechargeable AA cells can be charged through the controller.
- Check the controller port. USB-C controllers need a USB-C-compatible pack and cable. A legacy micro-USB controller or Xbox 360 controller requires the matching older Play & Charge hardware.
- Connect the cable firmly. Plug the cable into the controller and a powered Xbox, computer or suitable USB power source. Use the cable supplied with the pack when possible.
- Continue playing. With a compatible pack installed, the controller can be used normally while charging.
- Leave it connected or disconnect when full. Microsoft says the pack can charge while you play or afterward, including when the Xbox is in standby. A full charge takes under four hours according to Microsoft’s specification.
If the controller works over USB but the battery level does not increase, the cable may be supplying controller power without charging the installed cells. Check the pack’s compatibility and charging documentation before treating that behavior as a fault.
Which Xbox rechargeable battery solutions support play-and-charge?
| Solution | Supported hardware | Charging during play | Stated charge or runtime | Other specifications and limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable | Xbox Wireless Controllers with a USB-C port | Yes; Microsoft also says it can charge afterward while the Xbox is in standby | Full charge in under four hours; up to 30 hours per charge | Microsoft cautions that runtime varies with headsets, accessories and usage; testing used preproduction units |
| PowerA XBPW0119-01 Play & Charge Kit | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows; not Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Yes; the pack can also be charged directly | Two 1100mAh batteries; up to 20 hours of gameplay per fully charged battery | Includes a 10-foot (3 m) USB cable |
| Xbox 360 Play & Charge hardware | Legacy Xbox 360 controller and its corresponding battery system | Yes; the Xbox 360 manual says you can continue playing while charging | Not stated in the cited manual | Uses legacy Xbox 360 hardware and should not be assumed compatible with current USB-C packs |
| Ordinary rechargeable AA cells | Controllers that accept AA batteries | Not established as an in-controller charging use case | Depends on the AA manufacturer and external charger | Use an external AA charger unless the battery maker explicitly documents charging inside the controller |
Microsoft’s USB-C pack
The current Microsoft option is the direct fit for Xbox Wireless Controllers that have a USB-C port. Its published figures are under four hours for a full charge and up to 30 hours of battery life per charge. The “up to” runtime includes Microsoft’s stated qualification that headsets, accessories and usage can materially change results.

PowerA XBPW0119-01
PowerA’s licensed kit includes two 1100mAh rechargeable batteries and a 10-foot (3 m) USB cable. PowerA states that each fully charged battery provides up to 20 hours of gameplay and that there are two charging methods: charge while playing through the controller, or charge directly at the battery pack. The listed compatibility covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows, but specifically excludes Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2.
Xbox 360 Play & Charge
Xbox 360 is a separate compatibility case. The legacy manual explicitly says the controller can continue to be used while its battery charges. That statement applies to the Xbox 360 Play & Charge system, not automatically to later Xbox Wireless Controllers or their USB-C accessories.
USB-C, micro-USB and Xbox 360: identify the right generation
Start with the physical connector on the controller. USB-C has a small, symmetrical oval opening and accepts the plug in either orientation. Older Xbox One controllers may use micro-USB, whose plug has a distinct top and bottom. Xbox 360 Play & Charge equipment belongs to the older Xbox 360 accessory ecosystem.
Connector shape is only the first check. The battery pack must also be molded and electrically specified for that controller family. A cable that fits the port can still be the wrong charging solution if the installed battery is not designed for in-controller charging.

Do rechargeable AA batteries charge inside an Xbox controller?
Do not assume they do. The available manufacturer information establishes charging during play for specified rechargeable packs, but it does not establish a universal rule for every brand of rechargeable AA battery and every Xbox controller cable.
The safe default is to remove rechargeable AA cells and charge them in an external AA charger. Use in-controller charging only when the AA manufacturer explicitly says that its cells and charging system support it. If the documentation is silent, treat the controller’s USB connection as a way to power the controller, not as proof that the AA cells are being charged.

With a compatible rechargeable pack, connect the cable and continue playing while the pack recharges. This is the central purpose of a Play & Charge system and is explicitly supported by Microsoft’s current pack, PowerA’s kit and the Xbox 360 manual for their respective hardware.

Troubleshooting: the controller works plugged in but does not recharge
1. Verify the pack, not just the cable
Check the exact battery model and its compatibility list. A USB cable can fit several generations of controller while the battery pack itself is limited to one generation. Confirm the listing names your controller and connector.
2. Check for a model exclusion
Some kits cover Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One but exclude particular models. PowerA’s XBPW0119-01, for example, excludes Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. An exclusion means the pack should not be treated as a supported charging solution for that controller.
3. Test the cable and power source
Reconnect both ends and try the cable supplied with the pack. If the controller is not recognized or loses power when the cable moves, inspect the connectors and try another known-good powered USB port. Do not infer battery charging solely from the fact that the controller remains on.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Allow the specified charging time
Microsoft specifies under four hours for a full charge on its current USB-C pack. A battery that was deeply depleted may not show a meaningful increase immediately. If it still never reaches a charge after the stated period, consult the pack manufacturer’s support and warranty instructions.
5. Separate charging problems from runtime expectations
“Up to 30 hours” for Microsoft’s pack and “up to 20 hours” per PowerA battery are maximum manufacturer claims under their stated conditions. Headsets, accessories and playing habits can reduce runtime. Shorter-than-maximum playtime is not, by itself, evidence that the cable failed to charge the battery.
Quick Recap
Choosing a Play & Charge kit
Use this order of checks before buying:
- Controller generation: identify Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Elite Series 2 or Xbox 360.
- Connector: determine whether the controller uses USB-C, micro-USB or the Xbox 360 system.
- Charging method: confirm that the product explicitly supports charging through the controller while playing.
- Runtime and charge time: compare the manufacturer’s figures, keeping “up to” and testing qualifications attached to each number.
- Cable length: choose a length that reaches your seating position. PowerA’s cited kit includes a 10-foot (3 m) cable.
- Special models and accessories: check exclusions, headset use and any dock or stand requirements before purchase.
Bottom line for each common question
- Can I play Xbox while the rechargeable battery is charging? Yes, with a compatible Play & Charge battery pack connected by USB.
- Will a USB-C cable charge my Xbox controller battery? It will charge a compatible USB-C rechargeable pack, such as Microsoft’s current Xbox pack; cable fit alone is not enough.
- Do rechargeable AA batteries charge inside an Xbox controller? Not as a universal feature. Use an external AA charger unless the battery manufacturer explicitly supports in-controller charging.
- Which kit fits an Xbox 360 controller? Use the Xbox 360 Play & Charge system designed for that legacy controller, not a current USB-C pack.
