Does Ajani Still Have His Planeswalker Spark?

Probably yes. The strongest current evidence is that Ajani Goldmane retained his Planeswalker spark after the Phyrexian war. Wizards of the Coast has not published a sentence that explicitly says “Ajani has his spark,” so this is an evidence-based inference rather than a direct quotation. Wizards established that surviving Planeswalkers are represented on Planeswalker cards, while characters who lost their sparks appear as legendary creatures. A later Reality Fracture character guide includes “Ajani Resolute,” which supports reading Ajani as a still-sparked Planeswalker in that material.

Who the question is about

“Ajani” most plausibly means Ajani Goldmane, the leonin character in Magic: The Gathering. Wizards describes him as a warrior with healing and protective powers who mentors fellow Planeswalkers. His identity is therefore tied to more than one role: he is a character in the Multiverse’s story, a mentor to other spark-bearers, and a recurring card character. Asking whether he “has his spark” is asking about his current Planeswalker status, not whether he still possesses ordinary combat abilities or his leonin identity.

Why Ajani’s spark became a question

The Phyrexian invasion changed the status of Planeswalkers across the Multiverse. In the 2023 Wizards article Doing the Aftermath, Mark Rosewater explained that the war and the Invasion Tree caused most Planeswalkers to lose their sparks. That event is commonly called the desparking of the Planeswalkers.

The word “most” matters. It describes a broad outcome, not a universal rule. Some characters remained Planeswalkers, and the story and card files were designed to show which individuals fell into each group. Ajani cannot be classified merely by assuming that every familiar Planeswalker was desparked; his own evidence has to be checked.

Wizards’ card-type signal

Wizards provided a practical way to read the postwar status of characters. In the explanation of the aftermath, the company said that characters who retained their sparks would appear on Planeswalker cards, while characters who lost them would appear on legendary creature cards. This is a storytelling and product-design convention: the card type communicates the character’s status in the setting.

The convention is useful because it gives readers something concrete to inspect. A prose summary may discuss the emotional or political consequences of the war without stopping to announce every character’s spark status. A card representation can supply that information through its type. The convention is also limited. It tells you how Wizards intends a particular representation to be read; it does not turn every name in a guide into an explicit prose declaration.

What the available evidence says

Evidence What it establishes How it applies to Ajani
Doing the Aftermath, Wizards of the Coast, 2023 The Phyrexian war caused most Planeswalkers to lose their sparks. Ajani must be evaluated individually; the statement does not say that every Planeswalker lost a spark.
Wizards’ postwar card-type explanation Retained sparks are signaled by Planeswalker cards; lost sparks by legendary creature cards. The type of a later Ajani representation is relevant evidence for his status.
The later Reality Fracture character guide The guide includes entries for “Ajani Resolute” and “Ajani Unrelenting.” The Ajani Resolute entry supports a current-spark interpretation under Wizards’ stated convention.
The guide’s character context Ajani is recovering from the emotional consequences of actions taken while affected by phyresis and is preparing to defend the Multiverse again. His ongoing role is compatible with a returning or continuing Planeswalker identity, but the context itself is not a formal spark-status declaration.

How “Ajani Resolute” supports the answer

The later Reality Fracture guide is the key piece of Ajani-specific evidence. It lists “Ajani Resolute” among its Ajani entries, alongside “Ajani Unrelenting.” Under Wizards’ own rule, a Planeswalker-card representation is the signal that the character retained a spark. The Ajani Resolute listing therefore supports the conclusion that Ajani still has a spark in the period covered by that material.

This is stronger than relying on Ajani’s fame or on assumptions about what happened to other characters. It is a later, character-specific indication that can be read using the company’s stated convention. It also fits the guide’s description of Ajani moving through recovery and preparing to defend the Multiverse again.

Why the answer is “probably,” not an absolute quote

The distinction between direct statement and inference is important. Wizards’ general explanation names the card types and explains what they mean, but the quoted explanation does not name Ajani. The Reality Fracture guide supplies the Ajani entry, yet its prose does not separately say, “Ajani has his spark.” The conclusion comes from combining the general rule with the later Ajani representation.

That makes “Ajani retained his spark” a well-supported reading of the current material, not a sentence that can be presented as a verbatim declaration by Wizards. A careful answer should preserve both parts: the evidence points toward yes, and the evidence is indirect.

What having a spark means after the war

In this context, a spark is the status that makes a character a Planeswalker. The question is not asking whether Ajani can still fight, heal, protect allies, or mentor others. Those traits describe the character, but they do not by themselves establish Planeswalker status. The postwar card-type convention is the relevant indicator.

It is also useful to separate spark status from a character’s condition. A character can retain a spark while dealing with trauma, guilt, physical danger, or the consequences of phyresis. Conversely, losing a spark does not erase the person’s history, skills, relationships, or importance to the story. The two questions—“Is this character a Planeswalker?” and “What has happened to this character?”—are related but not interchangeable.

Ajani’s postwar narrative position

The Reality Fracture material places Ajani in a recovery phase. He has begun to heal from the emotional scars associated with actions taken under phyresis, and he is preparing to defend the Multiverse again. That framing matters because it shows Ajani continuing as an active character rather than being written out after the Phyrexian conflict.

Recovery should not be mistaken for a separate confirmation of the spark. The guide’s emotional description explains where Ajani is in his story; it does not replace the card-type evidence. Its value is contextual: the Ajani who appears in this later material is a character with an ongoing purpose, and the “Ajani Resolute” representation gives readers the status signal needed to interpret his spark.

How to check Ajani’s status in current material

If you encounter a new Ajani card or story reference and want to determine whether it reflects his spark, use the following process:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact representation. Record the full name, such as “Ajani Resolute” or “Ajani Unrelenting,” rather than relying on artwork or a shortened name.
  2. Check the card type. Apply Wizards’ postwar convention: a Planeswalker card signals a retained spark, while a legendary creature card signals that the character has been desparked.
  3. Place the representation in its story period. A card can depict a particular point in the narrative, so note whether it belongs to the post-Phyrexian material or an earlier period.
  4. Separate status from flavor text. Healing, leadership, combat ability, or references to phyresis add characterization, but the card type is the stated status signal.
  5. Use cautious wording when the source is indirect. Say that the representation “supports” or “indicates” retained spark status unless Wizards has explicitly stated it in prose.

Common mistakes when answering the question

Assuming “most” means “all”

The 2023 explanation uses a qualitative majority, not a universal rule. Turning “most Planeswalkers lost their sparks” into “every Planeswalker lost a spark” would erase the distinction the story is making.

Treating a character’s powers as proof

Ajani’s healing and protective abilities are part of his established characterization. They are not the published test for postwar Planeswalker status. A character can keep personal abilities whether or not the character remains a Planeswalker.

Calling the inference a direct quote

The Ajani-specific conclusion comes from reading the later guide alongside Wizards’ card-type rule. It should not be presented as though a source directly stated the sentence “Ajani has his spark.”

Ignoring the time period

Ajani’s status before the Phyrexian war, during the crisis, and in later Reality Fracture material are not automatically the same question. The evidence discussed here supports his status in the later material, after the war’s consequences have been established.

What this means for future Ajani appearances

Under the convention Wizards described, a future Ajani Planeswalker card would continue to signal that he has a spark in that story period. A future legendary creature representation would signal the opposite for the period it depicts. This gives readers a way to interpret new releases without assuming that every card represents the same moment or status.

The convention also leaves room for narrative development. A character’s status can be communicated differently as the story advances, so one should read the name, card type, and surrounding story together. The existence of a later Ajani Resolute entry is evidence for the current reading; it is not a guarantee about every hypothetical future version of Ajani.

Does Ajani have his spark right now?

For the current material represented by the later Reality Fracture guide, the best-supported answer is yes: Ajani appears to have retained his Planeswalker spark. The answer is qualified only because Wizards communicates it through the established card-type signal and the Ajani Resolute entry, rather than through an explicit prose sentence naming his spark. Readers can therefore treat Ajani as a surviving Planeswalker in that material while keeping the distinction between strong inference and direct confirmation.
