Does Alice Nation Run Well on Steam Deck? Setup and Control Recommendations (2026)

Short answer: Alice Nation is potentially playable on Steam Deck, but its official Steam Deck compatibility rating is Unknown. Steam lists a Windows release, and SteamDB identifies the executable as alicenation.exe, so SteamOS is expected to run it through Proton rather than a native Linux build. That makes installation straightforward, but it does not justify promising a fixed frame rate, battery life, or completely trouble-free suspend and resume.

The game’s card-dragging, mouse-oriented interaction and its no-timed-input, save-anytime, play-at-your-own-pace options are a good match for short handheld sessions. Start with Steam’s default compatibility choice and a mouse-like Steam Input layout using the touchscreen or right trackpad. Change Proton versions only if the default launch fails, and treat any performance conclusion as provisional until you have tried the current build yourself.

What the current compatibility evidence says

Alice Nation was released on Steam on October 15, 2026, by Hanamiriro and 2P Games. The store page shows Steam Deck Compatibility: Unknown, not Verified or Playable. At the time the page was checked, Steam also showed 98% positive reviews from 105 reviews. That review score describes player sentiment about the game; it is not a Deck-performance test.

SteamDB records a Windows-supported build with the executable alicenation.exe. No native Linux build is identified there. On SteamOS, the normal path is therefore Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games. Valve describes Steam Deck as a portable gaming PC and says that Proton can let most Windows games run on SteamOS without developers doing a separate heavy port.

An Unknown label means Valve has not assigned a user-facing Deck experience rating that would give you a practical guarantee. Valve’s rating system is intended to communicate what owners should expect, and Proton games and their middleware must meet Valve’s requirements before a title can receive Verified status. Unknown is not a statement that the game fails; it is a warning that you should validate the current build on your own Deck.

Why the game’s design suits handheld play

Alice Nation is built around dragging action and item cards onto locations and characters to explore, interact, and solve puzzles. The description also mentions gathering resources, crafting, and choices such as offering a greeting, using force, or sneaking an item away. Those interactions are deliberate selections rather than high-speed aiming or repeated button combinations.

That pace matters on a handheld. You can pause between decisions, use a touchscreen for a precise drag, or move a pointer with the right trackpad. The listed ability to play without timed input removes pressure to react before a countdown expires. Save Anytime reduces the cost of stopping when you reach a natural break, while Playable At Your Own Pace is specifically suited to short sessions on a train, during a commute, or before sleep.

These are design advantages, not proof of technical performance. A game can be slow and still encounter a launch, video, text-entry, or suspend/resume problem under Proton. The Unknown rating is why the setup below starts conservatively.

Recommended first installation

Use the standard Steam Deck installation path before changing compatibility settings. The goal is to establish whether the Valve-selected configuration works before introducing another variable.

  1. Install from Steam. Open the Store or Library on your Deck, purchase or select Alice Nation, and choose Install. Let Steam finish the download and shader or first-run preparation it presents.
  2. Launch once with the default compatibility choice. Do not initially enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. General Steam Deck guidance recommends leaving Valve’s default Proton selection in place unless troubleshooting is necessary.
  3. Wait through first launch. The first run can take longer while Proton creates its compatibility data. Avoid interrupting it unless the process is clearly stuck.
  4. Check the basic interaction loop. From the opening screen, verify that you can move a pointer, select a card, drag it to a valid location or character, open and close menus, and return to the game.
  5. Exercise saving. Use the game’s save function, exit to the title screen, and reload. Because Steam lists Save Anytime, this check should be part of your first session rather than something you postpone.
  6. Test handheld recovery. Put the Deck to sleep, wake it, and confirm that the game remains responsive. Also test returning to the SteamOS overlay and back.
  7. Only then adjust settings. If the game launches and the controls are usable, keep the default Proton choice while you learn whether any issue is game-specific or caused by a later change.

Record the result of this first run in practical terms: whether it launched, whether card dragging worked, whether text was readable at your preferred viewing distance, whether saving and loading succeeded, and whether sleep/resume returned to the same state. Those observations are more useful than a single “works” or “doesn’t work” judgment.

Control setup for card dragging

No official Alice Nation control map was identified. The following layout is an editorial starting point inferred from the game’s mouse-oriented interaction, its Mouse Only Option tag, and the Deck’s touchscreen and touchpads. You can change it in the Steam Input controller layout editor after confirming which in-game actions are available.

Deck input Suggested action Why it fits
Touchscreen Use as the primary pointer and drag surface Direct contact is the most natural way to pick up a card and move it to a location or character
Right trackpad Pointer movement Provides mouse-like control without touching the display
A button Left click or confirm Useful for selecting cards, buttons, and menu items
B button Right click, back, or cancel where the game exposes that action Gives a quick escape from menus or a contextual action if one exists
D-pad Optional menu navigation Some interfaces expose directional focus even when the main interaction is pointer-based
Steam button plus trackpad or touchscreen SteamOS pointer and text-entry recovery Provides a way back to desktop-style pointer operations if an overlay or text field needs them

How to make dragging reliable

  • For touchscreen dragging, place your finger on the center of the card, hold it briefly, move to the destination, and release only after the destination highlights or otherwise accepts the card.
  • For the right trackpad, use a deliberate click-and-hold gesture if the layout maps a press to the left mouse button. Move the pointer while holding, then release at the destination.
  • Keep a second input available. If a trackpad gesture feels imprecise, switch to the touchscreen rather than repeatedly changing Proton or graphics settings.
  • Test both inventory and world interactions. A layout that selects menu buttons may still make long drags awkward.
  • If the game exposes an in-game option for mouse-only operation, leave it enabled while establishing your layout; add gamepad-style bindings only after the pointer workflow is comfortable.

When to choose a different layout

Use a pointer-first layout if most actions are selecting, dragging, inspecting, or clicking. Consider adding more face-button shortcuts only when you have confirmed that the game exposes stable keyboard or gamepad actions for them. Binding many arbitrary keys can make the layout harder to remember and can create accidental actions during a drag.

Steam Input and Proton: a safe order of operations

Steam Deck setup problems are easier to diagnose when you change one layer at a time. Start with the game’s default Steam Input behavior and Valve’s automatically selected Proton. If the game works, there is no technical reason to force a different Proton release merely because one is available.

If the default launch succeeds

  1. Leave compatibility on the default setting.
  2. Play long enough to open several menus, drag cards in different contexts, craft or gather a resource, make a choice, save, and reload.
  3. Test sleep and resume once during a real session.
  4. Keep your control layout simple until you know which actions need remapping.

If the game does not launch

  1. Return to the game’s Library entry and open Properties.
  2. Select Compatibility.
  3. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  4. Test one current Proton release at a time, launching after each change.
  5. Write down the Proton version and the observed result. If one version reaches the title screen while another does not, keep the working choice and recheck it after game updates.

Do not change several Proton versions, launch options, and controller layouts simultaneously. If you do, you will not know which change fixed or caused the problem. A working version is useful evidence for your own Deck, but it is not a universal requirement for every hardware revision or future build.

If it launches but input is unusable

  • Open the controller layout editor and select a mouse-oriented template or create the touchscreen/right-trackpad arrangement described above.
  • Confirm that the primary click is mapped to a left click or confirm action.
  • Check whether an accidental right-click or back binding is firing when you release a drag.
  • Try the touchscreen directly. If touch works while the trackpad does not, the problem is the layout rather than evidence that the game cannot run.
  • Restart the game after saving the new layout so you can distinguish a layout reload from a Proton change.

If resume or saving is unreliable

First reproduce the problem without changing Proton. Confirm whether the failure occurs after sleep, after opening the Steam overlay, after a manual save, or only when switching between devices. Exit normally and reload the save to separate a suspend problem from a save problem. Steam lists Save Anytime, but cloud synchronization depends on the game’s implementation; do not assume that a save made on one device is immediately available everywhere.

Performance expectations on Steam Deck

There is not enough game-specific evidence to promise a frame-rate target, battery duration, resolution, or graphics preset for Alice Nation. The official rating is Unknown, and the available records do not provide a Deck benchmark, crash statistic, battery test, or required Proton version.

Rank #3

The most defensible expectation is qualitative: a turn-based card-and-puzzle structure should be comfortable with handheld pacing if the Windows build renders and accepts pointer input correctly. That does not establish that every scene will be smooth or that sleep/resume will be flawless. Avoid presenting an untested number such as “60 FPS” as a recommendation.

A practical performance check

  1. Play through more than the opening screen. Include exploration, card dragging, resource gathering, crafting, and at least one choice.
  2. Observe whether pointer movement remains responsive while the game is processing an action.
  3. Check text and card labels at your normal handheld distance before changing display settings.
  4. Open and close the Steam overlay, then resume play.
  5. Repeat the test after a full sleep/wake cycle.

If the game is responsive and stable under those conditions, keep the configuration that produced that result. If you encounter a failure, capture the exact point at which it happened before experimenting with another Proton release.

Using Alice Nation for short sessions

The listed accessibility options support a flexible session pattern. With no timed input, you can stop to read a card or think through a choice. Save Anytime lets you create a stopping point before leaving the Deck. Playable At Your Own Pace indicates that the design is intended to accommodate slower progression rather than demanding continuous action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those features also reduce the risk of losing progress when testing compatibility. Save before sleep, after a significant puzzle step, and before changing a Proton setting. When moving between Deck and desktop, keep Steam Cloud enabled if you want synchronization, then confirm on the destination device that the latest save has arrived before continuing.

Common failure modes and the least disruptive fix

It returns to the Library immediately

Start by relaunching once with the default configuration. If the behavior repeats, use Properties > Compatibility and test current Proton releases one at a time. Keep a note of the working selection. Do not infer from the Unknown badge alone that the game is permanently incompatible.

The pointer moves but cards do not drag

Check that the primary button is held during movement and that the game is receiving a left-click rather than a keyboard confirmation. Try the touchscreen to rule out a trackpad binding problem. Verify the behavior on both an inventory card and a card placed in the game world.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Menus work but the game feels awkward

Keep the mouse-like layout and adjust only the trackpad sensitivity or click assignment. A pointer-based game may not become more comfortable when every face button is given a speculative shortcut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game is fine until sleep

Reproduce the issue once, save before sleeping, and test a normal exit and relaunch. If normal relaunch works but wake does not, treat suspend/resume as the limitation rather than immediately changing several settings. Until a game-specific fix is documented, closing the game before a long break is the safer routine.

A save is missing on another computer

Check that Steam Cloud is enabled on both devices and allow synchronization to finish before launching. Cloud behavior depends on the game’s implementation, so verify the visible save list rather than assuming that a recent Deck save has transferred.

Should you buy it specifically for Deck play?

Buy with the understanding that Deck support is still unconfirmed. The strongest reasons to expect a reasonable handheld experience are the deliberate, card-based pace and the listed mouse-only, no-timed-input, save-anytime, and at-your-own-pace options. The reasons for caution are the Unknown compatibility label, the Windows-only listing, and the lack of published Alice Nation-specific performance measurements.

If you already own a Deck and want a puzzle game for flexible sessions, the recommended approach is low-risk: install from Steam, use the default Proton choice, begin with touchscreen or right-trackpad controls, and test saving and resume during the first session. If you require a verified rating, a guaranteed native Linux build, or published battery and frame-rate numbers before buying, the current evidence does not provide those assurances.

Bottom line

Alice Nation may run well on Steam Deck, but “may” is the accurate qualification as of October 2026. Steam rates it Unknown, and the listed Windows build is expected to rely on Proton. Its interaction model and accessibility options are unusually suitable for a pointer-first handheld setup, so start with the touchscreen or right trackpad and Valve’s default compatibility choice. Change Proton only to troubleshoot a reproducible launch problem, and judge performance by your own save, card-dragging, overlay, and sleep tests rather than by an unverified FPS or battery claim.
