What simulator research can—and cannot—tell us
A 2024 systematic review examined simulator interventions for young novice drivers. Its searches ran through January 26, 2024, and it included 15 studies published from 2010 to 2022. The studies reported improvements in some skills measured in simulators, such as responding to stimuli, maintaining lane position, and regulating speed. But the review found it unclear whether those gains improved on-road driving or safety, either immediately or over time. The authors rated the evidence as low quality, noting risks such as selection bias, confounding, and type I errors. Read the review.
That distinction matters: getting better at a simulated task is not the same as demonstrating better driving on public roads. The review does not establish that Assetto Corsa improves real-world driving, and its findings about simulator training cannot be assumed to apply to this specific game.
A racing game is not the same as a driver-training simulator
Driving simulators cover different kinds of experiences. A 2023 systematic review discusses entertainment games alongside procedural training simulators and full-mission simulators. These categories can differ in purpose, scenarios, instruction, and feedback. A structured training simulator may be used as part of a curriculum; playing a consumer racing game on your own is not the same intervention. Read the 2023 review.

A Quebec cohort study examined simulator training integrated into commercial driver education, another setting distinct from unsupervised game play. Its existence does not demonstrate that Assetto Corsa transfers driving skills to the road. See the study.
What you can reasonably take from playing
Assetto Corsa can provide practice responding to a simulated car and track. The evidence summarized here does not show that this practice teaches road rules, prepares you for real traffic, or makes you safer behind the wheel. Racing scenarios and game feedback should not be treated as a substitute for learning in the vehicle and road conditions where you will actually drive.

The practical boundary is straightforward: enjoy the game for sim racing, but do not use it to replace lessons, an instructor’s guidance, or supervised on-road practice. The 2024 review’s authors similarly caution that simulator training should not replace driver-education programs because its short- and long-term effects on real-world skills and safety are not known.
