No—not as a category. In both the 2014 and 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules, Rage resists bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, regardless of whether the damage is magical. Rage alone does not resist other damage types, including fire, cold, lightning, or force.
How to tell whether Rage reduces the damage
Check the damage type, not whether the attack is magical. If an attack or spell deals bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage while the Barbarian’s Rage is active, Rage’s resistance applies. If it deals another type, Rage alone does not provide resistance to it.
- Magical weapon dealing piercing damage: Rage resists the piercing damage.
- Spell dealing bludgeoning damage: Rage resists the bludgeoning damage.
- Spell dealing fire damage: Rage does not resist the fire damage by itself.
Other features or rules can change a particular result, so check those separately when an effect has an additional damage type or special exception.
What the 2014 and 2024 rules say
The answer is the same in both editions: the resistance is tied to three damage types, with no nonmagical-source restriction in the Rage text.

| Rules | Rage resistance text | What it means for magical damage |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | “Damage Resistance. You have Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.” Official 2024 Basic Rules, Barbarian Rage. | Magical damage of those three types is resisted; other damage types are not resisted by Rage alone. |
| 2014 | “You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.” Official 2014 Basic Rules, Barbarian Rage. | Magical damage of those three types is resisted; other damage types are not resisted by Rage alone. |
The editions differ in other Rage mechanics, so use the rules version your table is playing when checking details such as duration or maintaining Rage. D&D Beyond describes the updated rules as “5.5e” and the 2014 rules as “5e,” and says both remain supported and compatible in its edition comparison.
Rage’s spellcasting restriction is separate
Rage’s resistance does not make a Barbarian generally resistant to spells. The Rage feature also prevents the Barbarian from casting spells or maintaining Concentration while raging; that restriction is separate from which incoming damage types Rage resists. See the 2024 or 2014 Basic Rules for the feature text in your edition.
