Black & White (2001) runs on Steam Deck, but it is a manual Windows-game installation rather than a one-click Steam download. The reliable setup uses an original disc you own or a lawful personal backup, the official v1.1 and v1.2 patches followed by unofficial v1.42, a Steam shortcut for runblack.exe with Proton Experimental, and Steam Input’s keyboard-and-mouse emulation.
The game has no native controller support in this setup. A 30-FPS cap is recommended because the original engine was not designed for higher frame rates. The guide below covers acquisition, patching, controls, Proton configuration, a Bottles/Wine fallback, and the fixes for the problems most likely to stop the game from launching.

What works, and what does not
Black & White is playable on Steam Deck in both Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode once its Windows files are patched and launched through a compatible Windows runtime. It is not a native Linux game, and the documented route does not provide a current Steam store installation. The cited Deck report lists digital availability as none and assumes an original physical disc with a USB optical drive, or an equivalent lawful ISO backup.
- Game: Black & White (2001).
- Installation type: manual Windows files from owned original media or a lawful personal backup.
- Required patch sequence: v1.1, then v1.2, then unofficial v1.42.
- Steam launch file:
runblack.exeadded as a non-Steam game. - Proton setting: force Proton Experimental in the shortcut’s Compatibility properties.
- Input: Steam Input’s Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template, or a physical keyboard and mouse.
- Frame-rate target: 30 FPS.
The game can feel native once the shortcut, input layout, and frame limit are set, but every part of that sentence matters: an unpatched install may not launch, a shortcut aimed at the wrong executable will fail, and a conventional gamepad layout cannot replace the original mouse-and-keyboard interface without careful mapping.

What you need before starting
Owned game media or a lawful backup
Use an original disc that you own, or an ISO made from your own disc in accordance with the law where you live. The documented setup does not rely on an active digital Steam listing. If your copy is on a disc, the Deck report specifies a physical disc and an external USB CD/DVD drive, or an equivalent ISO. Steam Deck has no built-in optical drive, so the external drive is the practical way to read the installer in Desktop Mode.
A second computer can simplify file transfer
The successful Deck report installed the game on a Windows computer and transferred the resulting installation folder to the Deck. This avoids trying to make an old installer behave inside a new compatibility prefix. It is not the only route: you can install from the disc directly in a managed Wine prefix, but copying a known-good folder gives you a simpler recovery point if a shortcut or prefix later needs to be rebuilt.
Where to work
Use Desktop Mode for copying files, applying patches, creating folders, and adding the executable to Steam. After the shortcut works, switch to Gaming Mode for normal play. Keep enough free storage for the game folder, patch files, and a backup copy of the unmodified installation if you want an easy way to undo a failed mod or configuration change.

Recommended installation: patched files and a Steam shortcut
1. Get the installation files onto the Deck
- Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode.
- Connect an external USB CD/DVD drive if you are using the original disc, or mount your lawful ISO using your normal desktop workflow.
- Install the game on a Windows computer and copy the complete installation directory to the Deck, or run the installer in a dedicated compatibility prefix.
- Place the folder somewhere you can keep permanently, such as a location in your home directory or the area you use for non-Steam games. Do not scatter the executable and data files across multiple folders.
The important result is a complete folder containing the game executable and its data, not merely a shortcut copied from another computer. If you later move the folder, recreate or edit the Steam shortcut so it points to the new copy of runblack.exe.
2. Apply the patches in the required order
The Black & White Community setup documentation says the unofficial patch is required for launch and instructs users to install three patches in exactly this order:
- Official patch v1.1.
- Official patch v1.2.
- Unofficial community patch v1.42.
Finish each patch before starting the next one. Do not install Patch v1.3: the community guide identifies it as not being a gameplay patch, and the documented setup specifically says not to use it. Applying patches out of order is a common reason for a shortcut that appears correctly configured but exits immediately.
3. Restore the music files when necessary
If the game starts without music, copy the CD’s Audio folder into the patched game directory. Keep the folder name and its position intact; the game expects the audio data relative to its installation files. This step is especially relevant when the installation folder was transferred from another computer or created from a partial disc copy.
4. Set resolution and detail with the game’s Setup utility
After patching, run the game’s Setup utility from the installation. Choose a resolution that is comfortable on the Deck’s display and select maximum detail if you want the documented high-detail configuration. Running Setup after patching also gives you a clean place to correct a resolution that was inherited from a desktop monitor and does not display properly on the Deck.

5. Add the correct executable to Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Browse to the patched installation and select
runblack.exe. - Right-click the new library entry, open Properties, and select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a compatibility tool and choose Proton Experimental.
Use runblack.exe, not an installer, an old desktop shortcut, or a different helper executable. The documented Gaming Mode route depends on Steam launching this patched game executable through Proton Experimental.
6. Choose the keyboard-and-mouse Steam Input template
Open the shortcut’s controller-layout editor and select Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse. The original game has no native controller support in the documented setup, so Steam Input must translate Deck controls into the keyboard and mouse events the game understands.
Start with the template before making custom changes. Assign the trackpad to mouse movement for camera and cursor control, use a stick or the other trackpad for movement as appropriate, and place frequently used gestures or commands on rear buttons. The exact arrangement is personal, but test it in a quiet area before attempting a long session: camera movement, creature interaction, and world gestures all depend on reliable pointer input.
7. Launch once in Gaming Mode
Return to Gaming Mode and start the non-Steam entry. The first launch is a configuration check rather than a performance test. Confirm that the correct world loads, the pointer moves, the keyboard bindings respond, and music plays. If any of those checks fails, use the troubleshooting section below before changing several variables at once.
Why Proton Experimental is the starting point
The documented Steam Deck report specifically uses Proton Experimental for runblack.exe. Proton translates the Windows executable and its graphics calls for SteamOS, while the community patches address problems in the old game itself. Selecting a different Proton version before confirming the documented setup adds another variable to an already manual installation.
For a direct Steam shortcut, the practical sequence is therefore: point Steam at the patched executable, force Proton Experimental, and test. If that combination cannot launch the game, move to a managed prefix rather than repeatedly changing random Proton versions. A managed prefix keeps the game’s Windows configuration and compatibility settings together and makes it easier to reproduce a working setup.
Fallback: install in Bottles or Lutris
The furudbat Linux guide recommends a Bottles/Wine workflow when a direct non-Steam shortcut needs extra configuration or dependencies. This route is more involved, but it gives you explicit control over the runner and the Windows environment.
- Create a dedicated Gaming bottle (or an equivalent dedicated prefix in Lutris).
- Select a Wine-GE-Proton runner; the guide lists
wine-ge-proton8-26. - Set the bottle’s Windows version to Windows XP.
- Install the base game, then apply v1.1, v1.2, and unofficial v1.42 in that order.
- Configure the graphics libraries
d3dim,ddraw, andd3dim700as native, then builtin overrides. - Set the launch target to
runblack.exeand start the game from the bottle or its Lutris entry.
The guide explicitly warns that launching the game directly as a non-Steam title with Proton can require additional Wine configuration and dependencies. Use this fallback when the simple Steam shortcut fails consistently, when you need a separate prefix for the game’s legacy settings, or when you want to inspect and change DLL overrides directly.
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Once the managed prefix works, you can leave it as a desktop launcher or add its launcher to Steam for Gaming Mode. Keep the prefix associated with this game; sharing it with unrelated old Windows games can introduce conflicting DLL or Windows-version settings.
Controls: making an old mouse-driven game comfortable
Why a standard gamepad profile is not enough
Black & White was designed around keyboard and mouse input. The documented Deck setup does not expose native controller support, so a profile that only maps the analog sticks and face buttons will leave important camera and gesture actions unavailable. The Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template supplies the missing keyboard and pointer events.
A sensible first layout
- Use the trackpad as the mouse surface so small camera or cursor adjustments remain possible.
- Reserve a stick for WASD-style movement if you prefer analog control.
- Put common keyboard commands on face buttons or shoulders, matching the on-screen prompts you use most often.
- Use rear buttons for gestures or modifier keys that would otherwise require taking your thumb off the camera control.
- Set a trackpad click or shoulder button for the primary mouse click, then verify that both a short click and a held input behave as expected.
These are control-design recommendations, not additional game features. The exact bindings depend on your hands and on which actions you use most. The essential requirement is that the layout emits keyboard and mouse events rather than pretending the game has a controller API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to use physical peripherals
A USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse remain the most literal control solution. They can be useful while configuring the game, diagnosing an input problem, or playing on a desk. Steam Input is preferable for handheld play, but physical peripherals provide a clear test: if the game responds correctly to them, the remaining problem is the Deck layout rather than the game executable.
Performance, power and frame rate
The documented test found solid vanilla performance at low power and observed roughly 6 watts of average power draw with a 4 W TDP setting. That measurement came from one author’s limited test in the first Land, so treat it as an example rather than a guarantee for every world, save, mod, or Deck software version.
Set a 30-FPS limit in the Deck’s performance controls. The report recommends this because the original engine was not built for higher frame rates; removing the cap can make timing or behavior less predictable even when the hardware appears able to render more frames. A stable 30 FPS is the target for the documented configuration, not a claim that every scene has been benchmarked.
Keep the patched, unmodified game as your baseline. Optional fan modifications such as drawing-distance changes or HD assets may alter visual quality, performance, and compatibility. Add them only after the base installation launches and controls correctly, and keep a backup so you can return to the known-good files.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not launch
- Confirm that v1.1 was installed before v1.2, and v1.2 before unofficial v1.42.
- Verify that Steam’s shortcut points to the patched installation’s
runblack.exe, not to an installer or an old copy. - In the shortcut’s Properties > Compatibility, force Proton Experimental for the direct Steam route.
- If the shortcut still exits, move the installation into a dedicated Bottles or Lutris prefix and apply the runner and DLL settings described above.
There is no music
Copy the CD’s Audio folder into the game directory. Check that it is inside the same installation folder used by runblack.exe; copying it beside a duplicate or unpatched folder will not change the files Steam launches.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The controls feel wrong or gestures do nothing
Reopen the controller layout and select Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse. A generic gamepad profile cannot provide the original keyboard and pointer events. Test the trackpad’s mouse movement and click, then check each keyboard binding individually. A physical keyboard and mouse can confirm whether the executable is receiving input before you continue tuning Steam Input.
The screen is stretched, clipped or unreadable
Run the game’s Setup utility after patching and select the desired resolution. A setting copied from a desktop monitor can be unsuitable for the Deck display. Make one resolution change at a time and relaunch so you can identify which setting produced the usable result.
The direct Steam shortcut fails but the files look correct
Do not assume that replacing the executable or adding random launch options will repair an old prefix. Create a dedicated Gaming bottle or Lutris prefix, select the listed Wine-GE-Proton runner, set Windows XP mode, add the three native-then-builtin overrides, and launch the patched runblack.exe there. This isolates the game’s dependencies from other Windows titles.

Return to the backed-up patched files, confirm the vanilla game launches at 30 FPS, and add modifications one at a time. Drawing-distance and HD-asset mods are optional and can introduce additional compatibility variables; they are not required for the baseline Deck setup.
Choosing between the two setup routes
| Decision | Direct Steam non-Steam shortcut | Managed Bottles or Lutris prefix |
|---|---|---|
| Game files | Original disc or lawful ISO, often transferred as a complete folder | Original disc or lawful ISO installed inside a dedicated prefix |
| Runtime | Proton Experimental forced in Steam Compatibility properties | Wine-GE-Proton; the guide lists wine-ge-proton8-26 |
| Windows environment | Steam’s Proton prefix for the non-Steam entry | Dedicated Gaming bottle or Lutris prefix set to Windows XP mode |
| Graphics configuration | Use the game’s Setup utility after patching | Use the game’s Setup utility plus d3dim, ddraw, and d3dim700 native-then-builtin overrides |
| Input | Steam Input Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template | Steam Input when launched through Steam, or physical keyboard and mouse |
| Best use | Fastest path to a Gaming Mode shortcut when the patched files launch cleanly | Recovery path when the direct shortcut needs extra dependencies or isolated legacy settings |
Start with the direct route because it has fewer moving parts. Choose the managed route when launch failures persist or when you need explicit control over the Windows version, runner, and DLL overrides.
Maintenance and optional modifications
Keep a copy of the patched, working folder before experimenting. The baseline is the v1.1 → v1.2 → v1.42 sequence, the restored Audio folder when needed, a working Setup configuration, Proton Experimental or the documented Wine-GE-Proton runner, and a 30-FPS cap. That baseline gives you a known reference when a future Deck update, prefix change, or mod causes trouble.
Fan mods can improve drawing distance or add HD assets, but they are optional. Because they change files or rendering behavior, they can add compatibility variables that do not exist in the vanilla patched game. Add one modification at a time, keep its original files available, and verify launch, music, controls, and frame pacing after each change.

- You own the original disc or are using a lawful personal ISO backup.
- An external USB CD/DVD drive is connected if you are reading physical media.
- The complete game folder is on the Deck or installed in the intended prefix.
- Official v1.1, official v1.2, and unofficial v1.42 were applied in that order.
- Patch v1.3 was not installed.
- The CD’s
Audiofolder is present if music was missing. - The game’s Setup utility has a Deck-suitable resolution and desired detail level.
- Steam launches the patched
runblack.exeas a non-Steam game. - Proton Experimental is forced for the direct Steam route, or the Bottles/Lutris runner and overrides are configured.
- The controller layout is Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse, with camera and gesture inputs tested.
- The frame-rate limit is set to 30 FPS.
With those conditions met, Black & White is a practical Steam Deck game despite its age and manual installation. The work is front-loaded into obtaining lawful files, applying the patches in order, and translating its mouse-and-keyboard controls; afterward, the non-Steam shortcut can be launched from Gaming Mode like other library entries.
