Yes. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the official next-generation continuation of Naruto, not a remake or an unrelated spin-off. It follows Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Seventh Hokage Naruto Uzumaki, as the shinobi world enters a peaceful but rapidly changing era. The story then continues after a major time jump in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

That distinction matters when deciding what to expect. Boruto is not a story in which Naruto remains the viewpoint character and simply receives a new mission. Boruto Uzumaki is the central protagonist, and the conflicts are shaped by the consequences of Naruto’s completed story: peace after the war, new technology, powerful inherited abilities, and the strain placed on families whose parents helped reshape the world.
The sequel also adds new mythology and antagonists. New material does not erase Naruto’s canon; it develops the same timeline after the events of the original manga and anime.
Where does Boruto fit in the Naruto timeline?
After the Fourth Shinobi World War
Shueisha’s official story guide presents the starting point as a post-war era in which the Hidden Leaf Village enjoys peace. Naruto has become the Seventh Hokage, and the village is more stable and technologically developed than it was during his childhood. The calmer setting is deliberate: the new generation begins with opportunities that Naruto’s generation did not have.
Boruto enters the Ninja Academy
Boruto is introduced as Naruto’s son, but his relationship with his father is initially complicated. Naruto’s duties as Hokage leave him frequently absent from home, so Boruto’s personal conflict is not the same as Naruto’s childhood loneliness. Boruto’s frustration comes from living in the shadow of a famous parent and from feeling that official responsibilities have displaced family life.
The story’s publication starting point
The Naruto Official Site identifies 2016 as the beginning year shown for the Boruto story lead-in. In reading terms, that lead-in is Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, followed by Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The two titles are phases of one continuing continuity, not alternate versions of the same plot.
Which Naruto characters remain important?
The sequel introduces a large cast, yet several Naruto-era figures remain structurally important. Their roles range from parent and political leader to mentor and family connection.

Boruto Uzumaki
Boruto is Naruto’s son and the principal protagonist. His Uzumaki heritage connects him to Naruto’s family, while his upbringing in a peaceful Konoha gives him a very different starting point from his father. He enters the Ninja Academy to learn the ways of the ninja as the shinobi world changes.

Naruto is now the Seventh Hokage and serves as the political and emotional backdrop for the new generation. His completed arc supplies the peace, institutions and family circumstances in which Boruto grows up. Naruto is therefore more than a cameo from the previous series: his decisions and responsibilities directly affect Boruto’s life and the village’s future.
Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke remains a major bridge to the original story. In the official Naruto Q&A, artist Mikio Ikemoto explains that Boruto follows Sasuke after Sasuke leaves the village and calls him “Master.” That teacher-student relationship gives Boruto a direct connection to one of Naruto’s most important rivals and allies. Sasuke’s knowledge, reputation and history continue to influence how Boruto understands the shinobi world.
Himawari Uzumaki
Himawari is Boruto’s younger sister. The official Q&A identifies her as carrying both Uzumaki and Hyuga blood and says those factors work synergistically with Kurama’s chakra. Her family background therefore links two major Naruto bloodlines while giving her a distinct place in the sequel’s power structure. She is not simply a younger version of Boruto; her abilities and relationship to the family develop on their own terms.
Kawaki
Kawaki is Boruto’s central counterpart. The two boys come from different circumstances, but their lives become inseparable after Kawaki enters the Uzumaki household and the larger conflict surrounding him reaches Konoha. Their relationship drives the later status quo, particularly after the power called Omnipotence reverses their fates.

Spoiler warning for the later manga: Boruto and Kawaki are not merely friends or rivals. The story makes them the two points around which the sequel’s identity crisis turns.

Shueisha’s official synopsis states that their fates are reversed by Omnipotence, a godlike power. This event changes how the world interprets each boy and makes the established social order treat one as though he belongs in the other’s position. The reversal is a canon mechanism within the story, not a reboot or a separate continuity.
Because Omnipotence affects the status quo surrounding both characters, later chapters should be read after the pre-time-jump Next Generations material. Starting with Two Blue Vortex without that context makes the relationships, loyalties and public assumptions appear arbitrary.
What is the Boruto time jump?
The major break between the two manga titles is a substantial time jump and a changed status quo. The first phase follows Boruto and his peers while they are still developing as young shinobi. Two Blue Vortex begins after that interval, with the characters older and the consequences of Omnipotence shaping the world they return to.
The official Naruto and VIZ pages confirm the two-part structure and the major change in circumstances, but they do not publish an exact elapsed-year figure. The commonly repeated description of a “three-year time skip” should therefore be treated as a secondary estimate rather than an exact number stated by those official pages. If you need a precise canon date, the available official descriptions do not establish one.
What is established is the reading order: complete Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, then move to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. The second title is the post-time-jump continuation, not a replacement series with a different canon.
Is Boruto canon to Naruto?
Yes. The official manga sequence treats Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as the next-generation story in the Naruto world and Two Blue Vortex as its continuation. The connection is supported by direct family relationships, the return of Naruto-era characters, the post-war setting and ongoing consequences from the original series.

For continuity questions, the manga is the clearest reference because it presents the primary sequence of chapters and collected volumes. The anime is an adaptation and may organize, expand or time its material differently. “Canon” should therefore be qualified by medium: manga events belong to the official manga sequence, while an anime-only episode may be an adaptation addition unless the manga later establishes the same event.
Should you read Boruto or Two Blue Vortex first?
Read the titles in publication order. The following sequence preserves the character introductions and explains the later reversal of Boruto and Kawaki’s circumstances.
- Finish Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. This is the initial, pre-time-jump phase. It establishes Boruto’s family, his Academy-era development, Sasuke’s role as mentor, Kawaki’s arrival and the events that lead to the altered status quo.
- Continue with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. This is the post-time-jump phase. The characters are older, the world operates under the consequences of Omnipotence, and the story assumes knowledge of the first title.
- Use the original Naruto series as backstory when needed. You do not have to reread every Naruto chapter to begin Boruto, but the original series explains Naruto and Sasuke’s history, the war, the Uchiha and Uzumaki legacies, and why the new era exists.
Starting with Two Blue Vortex is possible if you only want the latest phase, but it sacrifices the context that makes its identity conflict understandable.
Manga and anime: which version should you follow?
VIZ catalogs manga chapters, collected volumes and anime releases separately. That separation is useful because the manga and anime do not offer the same route through the story.

Before buying or subscribing, check your territory, edition and current availability. A volume number or anime release can be listed differently across regions, and the catalog itself separates these formats.
How Naruto and Sasuke function in the sequel
Naruto and Sasuke are present as characters from the previous generation, but neither simply repeats the role he had as a young ninja. Naruto’s position as Hokage makes him responsible for an entire village and creates the family pressure at the heart of Boruto’s early story. His legacy is an institution and a set of expectations that Boruto must either accept or challenge.

Sasuke’s role is more mobile and advisory. His history as a former rogue ninja and his later service to Konoha make him uniquely qualified to train Boruto and interpret threats that do not fit the village’s peaceful assumptions. Boruto calling him “Master” explicitly carries forward the teacher-student tradition that once defined Naruto and Sasuke’s own generation.
Their appearances should not be read as evidence that the sequel has stopped being Boruto’s story. They provide continuity and perspective while the new generation makes the decisive choices.
Why the Uzumaki and Hyuga family lines matter
Boruto and Himawari connect the Uzumaki and Hyuga families, two bloodlines with deep significance in Naruto. Naruto contributes the Uzumaki inheritance and the position of Hokage; Hinata contributes the Hyuga lineage. The sequel uses that family structure to show how abilities and responsibilities pass between generations without making the children identical to their parents.

The official Q&A’s description of Himawari’s Uzumaki and Hyuga blood working with Kurama’s chakra is especially important because it shows that inherited traits remain a meaningful part of the setting. Family connections are not decorative references: they can affect abilities, alliances and the way older characters respond to the younger cast.
Where the official publication facts fit

The guide’s official synopsis frames the story around a peaceful Hidden Leaf Village, Naruto’s son Boruto and Kawaki, then identifies Omnipotence as the force that reverses their fates.
Those details reinforce the continuity described by the manga titles: the guide is about the same post-war narrative, not a separate retelling. If you purchase it, verify the edition and territory because print availability and catalog listings can vary.
Common misconceptions about Boruto’s connection to Naruto
- “Boruto is a reboot.” No. It is set after Naruto’s story and carries forward its families, institutions and consequences.
- “Naruto is replaced completely.” Naruto is no longer the protagonist, but he remains the Seventh Hokage and a central influence on Boruto’s life.
- “Two Blue Vortex is a different universe.” It is the post-time-jump continuation of the same Boruto manga continuity.
- “The time jump is officially confirmed as exactly three years.” The official pages establish a major interval but do not state an exact number of elapsed years.
- “You can start with Two Blue Vortex without missing anything.” You can, but the later identity reversal and character loyalties depend on events from Next Generations.
