Does Cronos: The New Dawn Have Only One Difficulty? Modes Explained

Cronos: The New Dawn began with one difficulty setting, but Bloober Team later announced Easy, Standard, and unlockable highest-difficulty modes.

No. Cronos: The New Dawn launched with one starting difficulty, but Bloober Team later announced three named modes: Temporal Diver (Easy), Anvil of the Collective (Standard), and Forged in Fire, the hardest option. Temporal Diver was reported live on select platforms in February 2026, so availability may vary by platform.

Why did people say Cronos had one difficulty?

At launch, players began with a single difficulty setting. Game Director Jacek Zięba described the approach as “old-school”: rather than offering a menu of starting challenges, Bloober Team wanted players to learn how the systems worked and face a real challenge. That account comes from a Gamepressure interview.

The launch-era description is no longer a complete guide to the available modes. Bloober Team subsequently announced additional difficulty options.

What difficulty modes are available?

Mode Relative challenge Access and effects
Temporal Diver Easy Raises player health and reduces enemy difficulty. Bloober said in December 2025 that it was coming as an option; in February 2026, the studio said it was live on select platforms. The announcement does not name those platforms.
Anvil of the Collective Standard The standard mode. Bloober’s announcement does not state numerical gameplay adjustments.
Forged in Fire Highest difficulty Unlocks after completing Anvil of the Collective. Bloober’s announcement does not state numerical gameplay adjustments.

These mode names and descriptions come from Bloober Team’s December 2025 announcement and February 2026 update. The studio does not publish specific health, damage, ammunition, or enemy-stat values for the modes in those announcements.

Is Cronos: The New Dawn too hard?

There is no universal threshold for “too hard,” and the developers’ descriptions are not an independent difficulty rating. They characterize the intended challenge as tactical learning and preparation: understand enemy behavior, plan encounters, use the environment, and choose tools for the situation. Zięba said the challenge should come from “figuring out how the system works,” rather than from what he called “some ridiculous difficulty.”

Enemy merging makes each kill a decision

The central pressure is the Merge mechanic. Orphans can absorb dead bodies, becoming stronger and more resilient and gaining new attack patterns. Lead Combat Designer Shamil Yanbukhtin warned: “Most enemies in Cronos are capable of merging with each other. Your goal is to stop them at all costs, or deal with the consequences.”

Cronos: The New Dawn (PlayStation 5)
  • ADAPT OR DIE: In a desolate world filled with ever-present danger, your survival hinges on your ability to strategise and plan ahead. You can manipulate temporal anomalies to clear a path through the desolate environment and you will have to scavenge for resources to replenish your limited ammo and supplies.
  • DON’T LET THEM MERGE: The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others — through a grotesque process called Merging — to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • HARVESTER OF SOULS: Your mission is to locate key people from the past who perished in the ensuing apocalypse. Using your all-powerful Harvester, you can extract their Essences and have them accompany you into the future.

That means a fight does not necessarily end when an enemy falls. A body left within reach can become part of a more dangerous threat, so where enemies die and what you do next matter.

Limited resources reward planning

Ammunition is scarce and crafting opportunities are limited, according to the developers’ combat guide on PlayStation Blog. Its practical advice is to space out kills, lure enemies away from bodies, interrupt merges, and change weapons to suit the distance and enemy type.

Which mode should you choose?

  • Choose Temporal Diver if you want more breathing room: the announced changes raise player health and reduce enemy difficulty, while Bloober says the mode is intended to preserve the game’s tension and mechanics.
  • Choose Anvil of the Collective for the standard experience described by the developer.
  • Try Forged in Fire if you want the highest challenge; you must first complete Anvil of the Collective to unlock it.

Because Temporal Diver’s February 2026 rollout was described only as live on select platforms, check the mode menu or current platform update information if it is not available in your copy.
