Spoilers for late-game revelations and both endings of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The Dessendre family can be read through the five stages of grief, but the game never assigns each character a definitive stage. The framework is most useful as a lens for how Aline, Renoir, Clea, Alicia, and Verso respond to loss—not as a canonical checklist or a universal sequence.
Why the family’s grief is tied to the Canvas
The family’s fracture begins with Verso’s death. In the story account from Millenium, Verso dies in a fire and Alicia is disfigured. Aline enters the Canvas Verso created and makes painted versions of family members; Renoir opposes the lives continuing inside that painted world. Their conflict is not simply about whether someone is grieving correctly. It is about what love and responsibility demand after an unbearable loss.

The Canvas makes that conflict tangible. Staying inside it preserves a world shaped by the lost family, while ending it means relinquishing that world and returning Alicia to life outside it. The characters’ choices therefore touch several kinds of loss at once: bereavement, changed relationships, identity, and futures that never came to be.
Narrative lead Jennifer Svedberg-Yen described those wider experiences in an interview republished by Royals Blue in October 2025, saying, “And each of these characters represents a very real part of my life.” She also described “a unique kind of grief there, where you’re mourning something you never had.” Those comments illuminate the story’s emotional range; they do not establish a five-stage character map.

Why a five-stage mapping is interpretation, not canon
The five-stage model can make the family’s contrasting responses easier to discuss, but it should not be mistaken for a fixed sequence everyone follows. Characters can show overlapping or changing reactions, and the same action may reflect love, fear, self-preservation, or obligation as well as grief.
A 2025 Acta Ludologica study examines the family in terms of differing coping strategies and trauma responses rather than assigning one stage to every member. Its analysis also excludes Verso from its coping-strategy categorization. That makes a tidy one-character-per-stage chart particularly misleading: it is not the study’s framework, and the story itself does not provide such a key.

So the more grounded question is not “Which stage is each character?” but “How does each character respond to loss, and what does that response cost?” A stage-based reading can suggest questions to ask of a scene; it cannot settle what a character represents.
The final choice turns grief into a question of responsibility
The ending choice is between destroying the Canvas and preserving it. Fullclear’s ending guide describes the consequences and offers an interpretation of what each route means. The routes can be compared across three questions:

| Question | Verso route: destroy the Canvas | Maelle route: preserve the Canvas |
|---|---|---|
| Can the real family continue by letting go? | The Canvas is destroyed and Alicia returns to the real world. The route presents release as a way out of the painted life, though that does not make the loss painless. | The Canvas remains, and Alicia stays within it rather than returning to the outside world. |
| Do the painted inhabitants deserve protection? | They are erased when the Canvas is destroyed. | The painted people are restored when the Canvas is preserved. |
| Can preserving a lost loved one’s world become captivity? | This route ends the continued life inside the Canvas. | Preservation keeps the inhabitants, and Alicia, in the world shaped by Aline’s retreat. |
Fullclear reads Verso’s ending as painful acceptance and Maelle’s as preservation and escape. Those are the guide’s interpretations, not definitive statements of canon. The choice resists a simple equation in which letting go is always good and holding on is always harmful: destroying the Canvas releases Alicia and the real family but erases its inhabitants; preserving it protects those inhabitants while keeping Alicia inside.

Read the five stages as prompts for interpreting particular moments, not labels permanently attached to family members. The Canvas conflict supports a discussion of holding on, resistance, and release, but it does not reduce each character’s motives to a single emotional category. Even the apparent question of “acceptance” changes depending on whose life is being considered: the real family’s, Alicia’s, or the painted inhabitants’.

The strongest conclusion is that grief shapes the Dessendre family without producing one official stage chart. Their different coping strategies and the consequences of the endings offer a richer reading than assigning five people five boxes.
