Gaming can affect a relationship, but it does not automatically harm one. It may be a shared source of enjoyment or connection; tension is more likely when play conflicts with a couple’s expectations, responsibilities, or time together. Studies find mixed associations, not a simple rule that gaming causes relationship problems.
How can gaming affect a relationship?
Its effect depends on how gaming fits into the couple’s life. Partners may enjoy playing together, appreciate gaming as an individual hobby, or disagree about how much time it takes. The relevant question is not just whether someone plays, but whether both partners are comfortable with the pattern and whether it interferes with valued activities or daily functioning.
- Shared play: A game can offer an activity partners both want to do. A small study of long-distance couples describes participants using games to spend time together and express affection, but it does not show that shared gaming improves relationships generally.
- Solo play: Gaming can be an ordinary individual hobby. Conflict may arise if one partner feels ignored, shared plans are repeatedly disrupted, or responsibilities go unmet.
- Disagreement about time: One partner may see gaming as relaxing while the other experiences it as a loss of time together. A study of married couples found that perceiving time together as a problem was consistently related to relationship outcomes, while gaming frequency itself was not.
What does research say about gaming and relationship quality?
The findings are mixed, and the studies measure different things. Observational associations cannot establish that gaming caused a change in a relationship; small qualitative studies describe experiences rather than estimate how common they are.

The World Health Organization’s 2026 discussion describes evidence on digital technologies, video games, and social connection as limited and mixed. The available findings support looking at the couple’s actual experience rather than assuming either that gaming is beneficial or that it is damaging.

Does spending a lot of time gaming mean someone has a disorder?
No. Time spent gaming alone is not the WHO’s diagnostic definition of gaming disorder. The World Health Organization says gaming is a healthy hobby for most users and that only a small proportion of people who play develop a disorder involving impairment or distress.

- gaming taking increasing priority over other interests and daily activities; and
- continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences.
For a diagnosis, the pattern must cause significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or another important area of functioning, and would normally be evident for at least 12 months. A partner should not diagnose someone based on hours played or a disagreement about gaming.
WHO’s overview of addictive behaviour reports estimates of “problem gaming”—used as a proxy for gaming disorder—ranging from 1.3% to 9.9%. The overview does not state a publication year and notes that estimates vary considerably, partly because assessment instruments are not standardized. This range should not be read as a precise global prevalence estimate.

How can partners tell whether gaming is becoming a problem?
Focus on observable effects and agreements, not a universal hour limit. A useful conversation can separate the hobby itself from the specific points of friction:
- Name the impact: Describe what is happening—for example, a missed plan or a responsibility left undone—rather than labeling the other person or the hobby.
- Ask what each person wants: Clarify whether the disagreement is about shared time, predictability, household tasks, sleep, or whether gaming is a mutually enjoyable activity.
- Agree on practical expectations: Decide together how to protect plans and responsibilities while making room for gaming. Check whether the agreement feels workable to both partners.
- Revisit the pattern: If conflict continues, discuss what has and has not changed and whether either partner is experiencing significant distress or impaired functioning.
If someone persistently feels unable to control gaming, continues despite serious consequences, or experiences major interference with family or social functioning, consider discussing the concern with a qualified health professional. A number of hours or a partner’s frustration, by itself, does not establish a disorder.
